A great part of London is built on the natural floodplain of the Thames. The risk from tidal flooding is expected to increase as a result of the gradual sea level rise due to global warming. At the edge of the flood-risk area is where we find the site of our project, Stepney. ‘’To Defend the Indefensible City’’ is an experimental tetralogy of fictional diaries which refers to the area of Stepney in a period of 40 years from 2020 to 2080. What we tried to investigate in our thesis is how through the shift of the designers’ perspectives towards a wider platform of actors, deeply influences and mutates the urban decision-making.

The Polypolis game was initially conceived as a testing ground for SARCHA’s “CCR Athens Gerani 2010” pilot study. Four different groups of players strive to resolve complex issues related to the existing human/physical/natural resources within city blocks. As the current economic crisis hits a number of European countries, Polypolis social game takes a life on its own; it uses a playful manner to train/educate city inhabitants to cope ‘in common’ with issues that affect their life’s resources. Local adaptations have been developed for Athens, Rome and Thessaloniki. Polypolis Athens was the official participation of Greece at the London Festival of Architecture 2012.

SARCHA’s research team worked in Gerani neighbourhood exploring the urban accumulation of city resources. The data collected was classified in three categories, human, physical and natural resources and transferred onto multilayered maps. The 243 buildings in the (10.9 Ha) area belong to more than 3.753 private owners and present a distinct vertical differentiation of uses. Our Resources Reset Proposal aims to recombine the area’s building stock, human potential and manufacturing tradition with innovation to create a small scale production hub. To this end, SARCHA proposes the administration of resources ‘in common’ and puts forward the appropriate tools for the active involvement of inhabitants and owners alike.

This 1940s house was vacant for more than twenty years before the new owner decided to reinhabit it. Our brief was to refurbish, modernise and connect the four distinct parts of the house in order to re-establish the coherence in circulation, layout and materials as required for a modern single family home.

The competition carries the title ‘Reception-Starting Point’. The focal point of our proposal is a route - an extended public space with a start and an end, with centers of attraction for the visitors, with a network of small scale green spaces, with points for rest, with new entrances towards and from the project area. All these different networks and groups converse with each other having as a reference point the West and East Docks. The visitor comes closer to the city, learns for its past and its intense present, while the permanent resident finds a new space to express himself and reconnect with the city.

The Çorovodë region at the south part of Albania is famous for its rivers, canyons and caves. Its population depends upon agriculture having preserved traditional methods of farming. Our proposal focuses on four main components: small businesses, infrastructure, agricultural events, and regional agritourism initiatives in order to attract visitors. The backbone of the strategic proposal are 5 themed itineraries that combine wine tourism, geotourism, ecotourism and culinary tourism.

The purpose of the project is the urban regeneration of Bomonti, a post-industrial area in Istanbul. We explore design decisions at both a strategic and at a more detailed level of urban regeneration. On the Bomonti hill, our program concentrates on the preservation of some of the existing uses as well as a program of new ones in order to attract new and old residents, including a community center, a small university campus, an open space with commercial activities, and a new residential area with a mixture of affordable housing options. The main aim of the project is to recreate the whole area with the effort to unify new and old residents around a single community vision.

The objective of the studio is the design of a harmonic urban residential environment in a Thessaloniki, taking into consideration the densities, the land uses, the diversity and the special identity of the area. Special interest has been given to the common grounds of the blocks. High-rise buildings have been placed at the edges of thearea near the main arteries and smaller units near the stream thatpasses through the site.

The main axes of the proposal is the design of an open space noted more for its special character, than just another green space of the urban fabric. The park is addressed mainly to the residents ofthe area that will also be the guards of it. The participation of thevisitors is very important in all levels for the proper operation or thepark.
