design problemgiven the rich context of mt. vernon, baltimore, this project focused on how a designer should respond to a given site. what form should a building take? what program should it house, and how will that program influence and better the site? it was also a requirement that the building should incorporate some form of residential units. it was up to each student to decide what arrangement and form these units took.

design intenti chose a tower/plinth parti because of the rich contextual and programmatic relationships that it could create. i aligned my plinth with the adjacent building heights, and used brick to further connect it to the site. the tower height was derived from the scale of the building across the intersection. I also treated the tower in the inter-national style to give it autonomy from the plinth.in addition to a difference of materi-als and form, the tower and plinth also house different program type. the plinth contain a movie theater and more community based re-tail whereas the tower houses the residential units and functions more tailored to its occupants.a central courtyard serves a seam between the elements and broad-ens the potential number of activites, enriching the site.

design problemthis project took place in chestertown maryland, a sleepy college town on the eastern shore. the site was on the corner of the town’s two main roads, a block away from its center and within walking distance of the college and suburbs.the town had asked for a public assemply space, as well as a small library, but the rest of the programming was in our hands.

design intentone of my architectural heroes is louis kahn, and i decided for this project that i would research his own design strategy and mimic it as closely as i could.i found that he began many projects with charcoal perspective sketches of abstact forms. After studying his own forms, I began creating sketches of my own, and interated till i had distilled the form of the building from them.the final product consisted of a central community growing garden. agriculture had been a prominent influence on the town and i believed that introducing it to the urban fabric would benefit the town greatly. the gardens were flanked by a center for making to the south and a library on the other end. on the busiest street I placed the main entrance and a cafe to activate the streetfront.

design intentthis project was based at a winery in ariona and called for an assem-bly tasting space within the house of the vineyards head winemaker. merging the influence on pueblo forms with a modern aesthetic, i used intersecting cubes with different programatic elements to seperate the public and private spaces while creating rich relation-ships between them. the cubes spiral upward with increased areas of privacy. this arrangement also allows for the inhabitation of the roof spaces. at the highest roof, the winemaker can enjoy a 360 degree view of the entire site.

design problemthis project took place in dc’s chinatown on an urban throuroughfare with no regularity in fa-cade type or style. the question our studio was asked was how to tie this disparate group of buildings together with a new facade and pro-gram.

design intenti began this project with an abstract exploration in modeling, using a variety of shapes, materials, and textures to create layered compositions. these quick studies began taking the form of potential facades as ideas ran through my mind. I refined these ideas, created the final model that resulted from the study, and designed my final concept from this model.the final design- a wine bar- uses strong horizontal bands of stained concrete to connect my design to datum lines i drew from the surrounding buildings the four floors are connected by a vertical tower which houses an elevator which takes patrons to the top two floors, which hold the public wine bar. Be-low that are offices and the ground floor contains casks and display space to entice customers upstairs.
