Our product, called the SolarPuff is a little lantern with a HUGE impact. It is a Patent Pending solar flatpack + inflatable lantern. Designed with high performance fabric material that is specifically engineered for durability, flexibility, water proof and structured for adaptability. This light was developed for emergency relief after the Haiti earthquake, by Alice Min Soo Chun. This superior solar light is an absolute must for home gardens, pools, boating enthusiast, outdoor camping and hiking. The SolarPuff is ideal for emergency and disaster relief, because it auto inflates without using a mouth or pump. Its light weight design makes for lower shipping costs, and the high tech fabric creates a delightful dispersion of light.

Calculated from research, if everyone on the United States used a SolarPuff for one hour a day instead of a regular light bulb, it would save over 11 BILLION tons of CO2 emissions from going into the air each year.

This little light flatpacks to 0.25 inches and can fit in any back pocket. It boasts 100 lumens and can fully charge in the sun in 8 hours and lasts for 8-12 hours of light. If you only get to charge it for 5 hours, it will still last for 5-8 hours of light. The circuit contains a photovoltaic solar panel, 10 Bright White LEDS and a lithium-ion polymer battery. Although the circuit is made in China, the special fabric of the expandable, light diffusing element, is made in the USA. It is specifically engineered for extreme outdoor environments. HELIX VS. PUFF WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

The Helix is a Twist and a little more compact than the SolarPuff. It is made from recyclable TPU, an eco-friendly thermoplastic that has a unique memory for shape retention. A slight push will start the deflation process in motion and it will remember to flatpack back to a square. Also the light is more uniform than the SolarPuff since the SolarPuff has more of a spectrum of light.

The folding design of the origami balloon inspired the design for the solarpuff.

The SolarPuff and the Helix has a ziplock pouch for packaging. The SolarPuff light diffuser is made from a Sail Cloth Fabric that is made in the USA and the Helix light diffuser material (TPU) is made in China.

The Merlin SolarPuff provides light in 6 beautiful colors and is excellent for sailing, boating ad-ventures and other maritime activities. The Merlin SolarPuff is also fun for kids. Merlin SolarPuff shines in red, white, pink, green, blue and yel-low. The Merlin SolarPuff is designed with high performance fabric specifically engineered for durability, flexibility, is waterproof, floats, and is structured for adaptability. The Merlin SolarPuff is a 4.3 inch cube when popped open and features 10 LED’s and does not require mouth inflation. A full charge in the bright clear sunlight provides up to 8 hours of light. The Merlin Solar-Puff can also blend its colors setting, providing fun mood lighting.

The Merlin Helix provides light in 6 colors and is excellent for sailing, boating adventures and other maritime activities. The Merlin Helix twists to open and is available in: blue, green, purple, red, yellow, and orange. The Merlin Helix twists open and closed into a 4.25 inch square and features 10 LED’s and does not require mouth inflation. The TwiLight is an inch smaller than the SolarPuff, 3.5” square, and provides light in white and red colors. The TwiLight features 6 bi-colored LED’s providing 45 lumen of light. It is perfect to utilize as a night light, a bicycle light, a reading light or for navigating. The TwiLight features an SOS setting to blink in red, ideal for emergen- cies. A full charge of the TwiLight in the bright clear sunlight provides up to 7 hours of light.

It is still astounding that 1.6 billion people today do not have access to safe and sustainable light and rely on kerosene to light their world at night. The absence of light for the majority of the global population has had catastrophic effects on our local and global environment.

Sales of SolarPuffs, furthers our social mission to distribute light in the 3rd world and underdeveloped regions such as Asia and Sub Saharan Africa, where there are the most vulnerable of stake holders. When a customer buys a SolarPuff at 30.00 $US it allows us to subsidize a SolarPuff to someone in an developing region.

Our strategy is to work with on the ground communities and NGOs for the distribution of SolarPuffs. We believe in a multi faceted and cross-disciplinary approach to tackling issues of extreme poverty.

Q & A WITH ALICE CHUN, THE INVENTOR OF THE SOLARPUFF

Q How did you come out with foldable design? What was a source of inspiration for foldable design?

A There are a few issues that influenced the design.

MATERIALS:

My research in Material technology showed that the trend in materials are becoming thinner, faster, stronger, and smarter.

I wanted the materials to be high performance and strong, yet light for ease of shipping and packing costs.

The folding design of the origami balloon inspired the design for the solarpuff, because of the ease in transforming the light diffuser for the lamp.

After the haiti earthquake, we visited the disaster areas and realized that lightness and transportability was critical for getting the product to rural areas.

Q Could you define your philosophy filled in SolarPuff design once again? A ENIVIRONMENT:

Pollution—right now 60% of the GDP is energy consumption, and the air in our environment is directly effected by it. My son was born with asthma as is many children in urban environments—I realized that my child and his friends all had asthma. Then I found out that studies show that carbon emissions from energy consumption due to the use of fossil fuels creates billions of tons of carbon waste into the environment which directly effects our children’s health. Humans as a developing species, it is too early in the gene pool for us to be changing this rapidly, so it has to be because of our environment. When I realized this I started to design fabric with integrated solar panels, due to my research in the trend of materials.

In NYC alone 1 out of 4 children have asthma which is 70% higher than the rest of the country.

75% of the pollution in the air is created by buildings be cause of energy consumption.

One light bulb used by one person every day for 4hours for a year will produce 90lbs of carbon emissions.

GLOBAL ENIVIRONMENT:

Kerosene is a 38 Billion dollar industry per yr and there are 2 billion people in the world who use kerosene lanterns because they live with out a power grid, 2 million children die each year due to this toxic lantern and it is dangerous as a fire hazard. We are working with a mission to get every child in the world a Solarpuff whether they are in a 1st world or 3rd world. Unite the world with sustainable clean light. In india alone there are 30,000+ house fires caused by kerosene lanterns.

We also use NON TOXIC materials, there is NO PVC in the light diffuser and our materials as recyclable.

DESIGN PROVIDES DIGNITY

The SolarPuff was conceived to be a simple yet elegant design as well as affordable. Since it was inspired by the origami balloon, it can inflate with one pop…so it was called the SolarPuff we wanted it to be hygienic and immediate inflation due to emergency disaster situations, it is critical that there there was no risk of germs or disease being passed, so the one pull action of opening it into the cube could be done with out the need to blow with your mouth.

In areas where we want to replace Kerosene use it is critical to have not risk of cholera or ebola spreading, so our lamp is the best design for health and safety.

Q What are the strengths that design provides to the product function?

A This is a flat packable and pops open into a beautiful cube, it is the most efficient and fastest way to make a flat and compact object that can adapt and transform into a cube.

This light can be carried easily in any bag or pack to be used for emergency, or for home decor, or camping. We believe that the design can transcend all applications of use because it is a simple design. the cube is clean and the origami technology allows it to flat pack thin and transform easily into a cube.
