THE RESEARCH 1

THE RESEARCH

Down syndrome is a genetic chromosomal disorder af-fecting hundreds of babies born each year. It causes the affected individual to develop one extra chromosome. This affects an individual’s mental and physical capabili-ties.

Often diagnosed prior to birth, many parents chose not to carry the burden of raising a child with Down syn-drome. Other parents continue with the pregnancy, but regret their decision after the baby has been born.

The basis of this project began with the study of the euthanization of individuals with Down syndrome prior to and shortly after birth due to the high rate of Down syndrome abortions, murder and abandonment in North America. The hope was to understand potential causes and prevention methods.

Research consisted of articles, studies, websites and books. A design audit was conducted as a source of pri-mary research to examine the resources available to prospective parents. Areas of study examined include bioethics, law and parenting.

It was discovered that there is a discrepancy between what the medical profession sees as an acceptable qual-ity of life and what the law deems an acceptable quality of life. There is also a lack of knowledge about life with Down syndrome that is available to parents and medical professionals.

THE PROBLEM

There is a lot of stigma surrounding DS as a result of missleading, incorrect and false information. Families living with DS receive conflicting information and begin to limit what an individual with DS is permitted and/or capable of achieveing.

The issue is that contrary to popular belief, many DS individuals are capable of leading normal, happy and independent lives. By imposing these limitations in order to shield the indiviuals, society limits access to resources that can help them to successfully be inde-pendent. This also further promotes negative represen-tations of individuals with DS and limits the ability family members have to understand the disorder.

We need to limit stereotypes and increase support re-sources through education. The proposed solution is to create and promote an organization to educate and sup-port those with Down syndrome.

Page 5: Design Deliverables Presentation - WordPress.com · Design Deliverables Presentation. DSSC. THE RESEARCH 1 THE RESEARCH Down syndrome is a genetic chromosomal disorder af-fecting

THE AUDIENCE

Originally, the target was individuals with DS and their families, especially typical siblings without support.

Upon further reflection, the audience was simplified to individuals with DS.

While some individuals with DS are not very affected by mental disabilities, others are greatly affected. A child may be physically twelve years of age, but may only have the mental capacity of a child half his or her age. The same can be said for adults with DS. Many adults have limited functionality and live with family members or in respite care, other adults are self-sufficient, living on their own with successful careers.

Many individuals with DS have vision or hearling loss as well as dexterity and cardiac conditions. The effect of media on these conditions is important to consider.

Organized and easy to navigate

Page 7: Design Deliverables Presentation - WordPress.com · Design Deliverables Presentation. DSSC. THE RESEARCH 1 THE RESEARCH Down syndrome is a genetic chromosomal disorder af-fecting

CORE PROPOSITION

“Unity Blooms serves as a family friend-ly resource, which encourages families to bond while supporting one another and exchanging information about Down syndrome in an effort to help DS individ-uals lead independent lives.”

There are many myths about Down syndrome, which

can affect the way people with the disorder are seen by

society. Unity Blooms strives to provide positive infor-

mation directly from families or DS individuals to other

families in an effort to dispell on going myths and pro-

mote DS research.

The core need for Unity Blooms is for families to have a

place to connect where having DS does not affect the

way outsiders see them or the types of activities they

choose the part take in. It is a place where families can

enjoy themselves in spite of DS and not because of DS.

Preliminary Logos

LOGOTYPESThe logotypes are designed to represent the childlike nature of Down syndrome. The chosen fonts mimic

the style of a child’s handwritting or scribbling, while the blue hue isa varition on the blue that is one of two

main international colours chosen to represent the disorder.

DBUTTERFLYThe butterfly is one of the main symbols for Down syndrome. It is often presented with the Down syndrome

ribbon forming the basis of the insect’s body and is coloured in blue and yellow or navy and gold. Butterflies

serve as important symbols in the Down syndrome community. Trisomy, the malformation of cell division

,which causes Down syndrome creates a butterfly shaped twenty-first chromosome. Butterflies also

represent evolution, freedom and hope.

CLOUDThe cloud represents dreams. The logotype is designed to allude to the moon and stars. The entire image

alludes to bed, sleep and sweet dreams. Invididuals with Down syndrome and their parents often have

dreams that seem unacheivable due to the effects of the disorder. However, in sleep and in dreams, nothing

is impossible. There are no, physical or social boundaries to pose limitations. This logo is designed to

remind users that nothing is impossible.

DOVEOne of the organization’s objectives, is to serve as a spiritual resource to provide hope and positive

information to families. Down syndrome affects all races, religions and ethnicities. As such, religious

symbols such as crosses or angels have been omitted in an effort to avoid excluding certain groups of

individuals. Instead, a dove has been used to represent hope and spirituality. The prophet Noah used a

dove to bring hope to the human race. In other cultures, doves are symbols of life and peace. The balloon

in the dove’s beak represents freedom. Balloons are light and airy. They float and drift in all directions and

can only be contained if tied down. Together, the dove and the balloon represent the hope for Down

OUTSIDE/INFORMATION (ASL)This symbol is the American Sign Language hand sign for “outside.” If the Y position of the hands is

reversed the sign then becomes the ASL hand sign for “information.” ASL is a form of sharing iinformation

and increasing communication. Individuals with Down syndrome are taught Signed Language early on to

help their development and jump start their speech. The sign respresents the desire to exceed stereotypes,

preconcieved notions and boundaries. It also alludes to the exchange of information through a community.

BALLOON HANDS & VARIATIONSAs aforementioned, balloons are uplifting objects which allude to an individual’s rights to freedom or

independence. This toy references childhood, innocence and hope. The hands holding the balloon

represent the the sharing of information as well as the sharing of the responsibilities, truths and burdens

associated with Down syndrome.

THE NEWSLETTER

APRIL 2015 VOLUME 1 ISSUE 1

The Bloomer

After several years of working with individuals with Down syndrome as a teacher’s assistant for the York Region School Board this dream has become a reality.

While working as a teacher’s assistant, I noticed that the education for students with disabiliies was lacking. The stu-dents had no set curriculm or schedule. All the students with special needs were lumped into one class no matter the type or severity of the disability. While the kids were learning minimal life skills, they were picking up on negative social behaviours from students with other special needs. They lacked social skills and independence.

Unity Blooms was founded as a family-friendly resource, which encourages families to bond while supporting one another and exchanging information about DS in an to help DS individuals lead independent lives.

The Mother of All Dances

OUR TEAM 3

“Move’n’Mingle”had existed at the Bathurst Jewish Community Centre [BJCC] for many years but had been inactive for awhile. Fellow folk dancer Trudy Wolfish had initiated the revival request, as her daughter Debbie had been a “Move’n’Mingle”participant. I reflected on my experience as a parent of Rita, a regular at OFDA and Israeli dance events who hap-pens to have Down syndrome, as well as my experience at leading adapted folk dancing for the fragile elderly, and agreed to take on this new project.

Our group began as a joint venture between two community organizations: BJCC and Yachad. Initially the support staff consisted of volunteers and there were ten to twelve participants. In its second year, Reena, anoth-er community organization, became a co-sponsor, supplying two support staff to our program. This year, we have added regular volunteers from the Ulpana High School. Each year, the number of participants has grown, to the point that we have had to cap registration at the current level of twenty-one participants. Some of the participants attend with their own support workers, which results in a large

and lively dance group, whose enthusiasm for folk dancing rivals any other folk dance group that I have ever attended. Each evening con-sists of one hour of dancing, followed by a pizza dinner and then an art activity or a game. The range of dance levels in the group is very large. We have dancers who are independent, who arrive on public transit. Others are in wheelchairs and require one-toone or even two-to-oneassistance to participate. In between these two extremes, are dancers of many different ability

levels. The challenge for me, as the dance leader, is to adapt folk dances in a way that will work for everyone, one way or another. Each dancer participates at his or her own level. The goal is toprovide a meaningful and enjoyable dance experience for all.

Over the past three years, our group has developed into a cohesive unit. Participants have theirfavourite dances, which they request either by name or by gestures. These gestural requests

The website is the key element of the project. It serves not only as a source of information, but also as a social hub where patrons can go for social intercation and sup-port when needed. It serves as a safe environment where individuals can feel at ease.

The corporate identity designs validate the organiza-tions showing it is professional and trustworthy despite its more fun nature.

The newsletter ensures that the cultural community built through the website stays connected. Not every-one has access to internet, however they still may want to participate in certain activities as well as feeling linked to a social group.
