Blindness is not a curse, but merely a physical disability. Help these children realise it for themselves.

Sphoorthi Jyothi foundation is a helping home run for visually challenged children by Mrs.Jyothi. Mrs. Jyothi supports this endeavour through income generated from her medical shop, which is the source of her livelihood, while taking additional support from individual donors Sphoorthi Jyothi was established in 2007 and has been catering to nearly sixteen girls.

Ms. Jyothi, a public-spirited citizen has been running a small Home for Blind Girl Students, near the LB Nagar area, catering so a few girls pursuing their Inter and Degree courses.

Mrs. Jyothi is a registered Pharmacist (having a B. Pharm degree) and runs a medical shop, which is the source of her livelihood. She diverts some funds from this source into this effort, while taking additional support from individual donors. She set up this Sphoorthi Jyothi Small Home for Blind Girls in 2007 and has been catering to nearly sixteen girls.

Profile of the inmatesImpairment condition: Currently, 16 girl students are housed in this Sphoorthi Jyothi (SJ) Home for Blind Girls. All except one of them are visually impaired in both eyes. One of them has lost one eye (but her family refused to support her studies, so she is forced to stay alone in this hostel).

Economic background: All of them are from poor or very poor families (parents are daily wage labourers, small shopkeepers, etc.) from various districts of the State. They tried for admission into the Govt. Hostel for VH girls, but were the same because of limited number of seats. Then SJ Home for Blind girls gave them accommodation.

Education and career progress: Two of these students (all VH) are pursuing their Intermediate studies (HEC only; govt rules do not permit them to study MPC, BiPC) at Prathiba Junior College, Ibrahimpatnam, Hyderabad. It is a ‘normal’ co-ed Junior College. Rest of them are pursuing their degree Bachelor of Arts (EPP, HPP) at Prathiba Degree College, Ibrahimpatnam, Hyderabad. These VH girl students study on par with normal students and follow the same Intermediate syllabus as the rest of the students across the State. They compete on the same footing as the normal students studying the same syllabus.

A resident of this hostel completed her degree and even got a job as a Junior Assistant with the Kurnool Municipal Corporation, under the Physically Handicapped reservation quota. Another got a job in pharmacy as an attender at a drug inspector office, Warangal, Andhra Pradesh, India, while she was still pursuing her studies.

The SJ Small Home primarily serves as a hostel/home for these 16 girls, who otherwise could not have found a shelter to stay under. Ms. Jyothi (founder and caretaker) also provides some additional services.

The SJ Home is located in rented premises in the Hayatnagar Mandal. The owner of the house is renting at dirt-cheap rate (Rs. 2000 per month), because he identifies with the cause.

The 16 girls are provided food (breakfast, lunch and dinner) daily. Plates, glasses and cooking utensils have been donated by employees of MiDhaNi (Misra Dhatu Nigam Ltd., a Govt. of India organization). Some software employees are providing for their groceries (rice, vegetables, milk) but this only on a month-to-month basis.

Ms. Jyothi (caretaker) purchases toiletries, etc. for the girls.

SJ Home has 4 rooms and 1 hall, with kitchen and bathroom. The blind girl students sleep on the mats on the floor (no beds or mattresses). They each have a small suitcase and a couple of dresses. Some dresses and sweaters were donated by local colony residents.

There is one table (for computer) with about 10 chairs for the girls.

Electricity, water and other bills are met by individual donations.

Government does not print Braille textbooks for Inter and Degree. So, SJ home recruits volunteers (mostly, their classmates) to read out the normal textbooks aloud which is then recorded into tapes and CDs. The students prepare for exams by listening to these audio tapes. Tapes and CDs are a cost.

There is a radio and TV for the girls to listen
