Quartzsite Election planned for March 10

Quartzsite - Voters will be asked to ap-prove the renewal of the APS franchise agreement with the Town of Quartzsite in the special election which is coming up March 10, 2015. You are encouraged to vote “yes” to approve this measure. Here are some things you need to know to help make your decision: 1) The franchise in question is a con-tract between the Town of Quartzsite and APS, which allows APS non-exclu-sive access to the Town of Quartzsite’s streets, alleys and other public rights-of-way in order to build and service their electric system. It ensure APS complies with Town regulations for use of streets safely and effi ciently.

2) A “yes” vote will not raise your elec-tric bill. It is a renewal of an agreement that has been in place with the Town of Quartzsite for over 50 years. The 25-year term agreement is required by the Arizona Constitution. If this agree-ment is passed it will be in effect until, March, 2040.

3) Your current electric bill contains a fi xed 2% Franchise Fee, collected by APS. In turn, APS returns all of the Franchise Fee revenue, presently about $80,000 annually, to the Town of Quartzsite to support important town services such as public safety, and other vital town services. 4 A “yes” vote would change the Franchise Fee to allow the Town of Quartzsite to set the fee from zero per-cent (0%) to no more than two percent (2%) in the future. 5 If the franchise is not approved, the Town and APS will evaluate whether the franchise agreement should be revised and ask for voter approval

in a subsequent election, which will require additional costs for the Town of Quartzsite and APS.

The Arizona Constitution requires that a municipal franchise be approved by the voters in the Town. APS has a simi-lar agreement with 53 municipalities and the 11 counties it serves in Ari-zona. APS has been a valued partner with the Town of Quartzsite for over 50 years. They have made a number of capital improvements recently to enhance the reliability of service in Quartzsite and surrounding areas. APS supports our community through volunteering and contribute to local charities and educational institutions. They can only continue to provide these services if they have access to our streets and other rights-of-way which is provided for in this Franchise Agree-ment.

Just Rambling...

It’s been a disturbing week for journalists around the nation. With recent deaths of famous and not so famous reporters, to the suspen-sions of Anchors Brian Williams and Leslie Roberts. An article in Huffi ngton Post re-minds journalists, “The reporter isn’t and should almost never be the story. Or try hard not to be, no matter how much “personal brand” work our social media experts tell us is essen-tial to survive the tornado of change that’s tearing up our old ideas.” When journalists choose to make themselves the story, how can they report neutrally? The value is tell-ing stories... about “other people.” However, there are those who love the limelight so much, they get so caught up in the drama and forget about reporting facts. We see this happening daily; from the evening news to local tabloids (and I’m not

being specifi c, just in case “you thought this song is about you...”) If you’ve been reading my editori-als for very long, you’ll notice I ac-tually love living in Quartzsite and have a fairly positive attitude on life. My passion is helping business-es succeed through marketing and sharing with the world what they’re doing, telling their story through advertising. Without customers, businesses fail and the community at large suffers. Imagine if a business only adver-tised the goofs they made instead of shouting from the rooftops how wonderful their business is. Custom-ers would be turned off very quickly. This is why we only hear short clips about journalists getting caught ly-ing or abusing their positions. Think about it, do you want to shop at a store where you’re greeted by the owner complaining about what a horrible day it is, or would you rather shop where the owner expresses they’re happy to see you? I often hear vendors complaining loudly without noticing customers are walking away. People are natu-rally drawn to others who are happy and welcoming. Employers want happy employees because happi-ness means more productivity. I hope your day is full of happiness. ...Just ‘cause!

QUIT BICKERING I once knew a man who ran for a school board position. He made a promise that on every issue he would vote no. He won and he did. He convinced the board to vote no on a purchase of new school busses. In a district that was growing by leaps and bounds. The results were drastic. Council persons start thinking, you can’t control change you can only ad-just to it. Change is a process that just happens. Quartzsite is in a constant change and you can’t stop it. It just grows and grows and you are mostly living in a personal past, Quartzsite deserves something better. Quit bickering and placing extra work on our staff. It takes person pow-er to put together all those demands you place on the manager and town attorney, it just waists more time and money. Especially when it appears they are often motivated and guided by a personal vendetta. Perhaps the citizens of Quartzsite should ask annually for the cost of the councils demands on staff that are clearly not a total council issue. For every action, there is always a reaction.

THANKFUL FOR HEALTH CAREThe residents and visitors to the Quartzsite are have a lot to be thank-ful for in their health care. I have been seeing Dr. Paglinawan for about 15 years. He listens and tries to find out what your problem is. Dr. Cole came to Quartzsite a couple of days a week from Phoenix He gives excel-lent Chiropractic care and is not one who tells you that you need to come back weekly, daily or monthly. These two Doctors need to be commended for their excellent care and service to the Quartzsite area. I no longer stay in Quartzsite for any length of time. I now have wintered in Niland Cali-fornia. I want everyone to know that for medical services I drive over a 110 miles to see these Doctors. They are the best. Thank you Dr. Paglinawan and Dr. Cole.

HARD WORKING TOWN STAFF Last week at the council meeting there was an item on the agenda that brought up the subject of reducing Town employees by 10 %. Having worked for the Town, my concern is that if they do reduce employment by 10%, what they will actually be reduc-ing is customer service by that amount. I know for a fact that when you reduce employees to an extreme, the commu-nity as a whole is what suffers. When I worked there, people were skipping their breaks, working through their lunch and donating their time after hours. These are hard working employees and if you suggest comp time that won’t work either. You have to be able to catch up on your work to be able to take the time off. In other words, it becomes a vicious circle. (You take time off and you fall behind in your work to only have to work late to catch up.) The council needs to realize that there is more to running a town be-sides money. They need to make sure that the community as a whole doesn’t suffer. They need to approach the Town Manager and ask for a survey to be done to find out how many of them work though their lunch, don’t take breaks and donate time to the town by working after hours without pay. I think they would be surprised by what they would find out. They would also keep it as it is, so the community would have good customer service and not suffer.

GRATITUDE EXPRESSED Thank you to : Uta and Betty for walking Pretty Girl and Foxy2 for their mommy (me), as I’m unable to do it. They have been so helpful and awe-some. Thank you to Shelley for sitting and watching the Pretty Girl and Foxy2 and my yard sale, so I could make an er-rand. Thank you for Wheeler and John as I had ran out of propane, the com-pany Ferrell Gas filled it up. Also have to thank big time Sheena, Shawn and Jim of Ferrell Gas for their immediate help too, because when the propane ran out, they got everything restarted, and checked for leaks. They were so helpful with all the work they did.

RESPONSIBILITY BEGINS WITH YOU “Responsibility starts with the willingness to experience yourself as cause. It starts with the willingness to have the experience of yourself as cause in the matter.” -Werner Erhard Responsibility is not: Burden, Praise, Blame, Credit, Shame, Guilt. Because all these include judgments and evaluations of good and bad, right and wrong, or better or worse, they are not responsibility. Responsibility starts with the will-ingness to deal with a situation from and with the point of view, whether at the moment realized or not, that YOU are the source of what you are, what you do, and what you have. This point of view extends to include even what is done to you and ultimately what another does to another. There is no good, there is no bad, there just is. The negative works just the same as the positive, negative can be good when you use it for success. Take anything negative in your life and look for three positive things that came from the negative, eventually the negative fades and all things are positive.

You are your own creator. You create everything that happens in your life, and anything can stop at this very mo-ment, by just calling it forth. Stop blam-ing others! Accept what is...and start living! Judgments are attacks that hold you down from growing; just live; enjoy. Teamwork: When you take on your context of responsibility, you make the team strong, functional, supportive and fun. You can call forth, put into being, your own domain that has no context. You create it with your knowingness, your imagination, your own creativity. You are your own unique individual; but you must be distinct, clear and make the distinction, the clarity and develop a desire and the desire, the imagination, the inner knowingness comes into being. Make it yours. Belief systems and reality: Our belief system is based upon our past experi-ence which is constantly being relived in the present with an anticipation of the future being like the past. Detach your-self from the past. Future preoccupation and the choose to live in the now!

www.MyQuartzsite.comQuartzsite - On January 20, 2015, Special Quartzsite Prosecutor Alexan-der Benikov fi led a disorderly conduct charge against Council Member Hal Davidson. According to court docu-ments fi led in Quartzsite Town Court, on or about August 26, 2014 at the Senior Center, Davidson “engaged in seriously disruptive behavior that was witnessed by several people.” Several people witnessed Davidson engage in threatening and harassing con-duct which is in violation of Arizona Revised Statute 13-2904.A1, a misde-meanor. Davidson’s only comment Monday to Desert Messenger was, “The whole thing is totally bogus!” However, back in early fall, Davidson voluntarily reported the incident to Desert Messenger and admitted he “was hot” and just “went off!” He explained the Senior Center had an issue with his political sign being attached to their fence. According to Davidson, volunteers from Senior Cen-ter took his sign down and called him within the legal time limts. He said he drove straight to the Senior Center. Davidson said that he had permis-sion from the neighboring business to put up signs. He believed the fence belonged to the business or was at least shared. Representatives from the Senior Center pointed out the fence belonged to the non-profi t organiza-tion and they cannot allow political signs on their property.

Davidson was to appear in court on February 11th, but an extension was granted until February 25th in Quartzsite Magistrate Court.

The Open House and Ribbon Cutting gathering at Heather Caton’s 540 Des-ert Vista in January was a big success. Over 60 people attending throughout the day to learn more about the Art of Tai Chi, see live demonstrations and even join in a lesson. There were draw-ings for give-aways and most of all, a chance to meet people in the commu-nity.

“It was wonderful to meet so many great people in the community, I am grateful so many took the time to come out to say hi,” said Heather Caton.

Tai Chi, pronounced (TIE-CHEE) and (written as T’ai Chi, Taiji, Tai Chi Chuan) is a slow-motion, low-im-

pact, weight-bearing, and aerobic, yet relaxing exercise. It began as a mar-tial art in China. Tai Chi has gained enormous popularity in America and throughout the rest of the world for its health benefi ts for body and mind. As it developed, it took on the purpose of enhancing physical and mental health. Practiced in a variety of styles, Tai Chi involves slow, gentle movements, deep breathing, and meditation. Harvard University is calling it “Medicine in Motion.”

Heather teaches several classes in the community including beginner Tai Chi and Yoga with a Chair. To learn more about her classes contact Heather at 585-935-1982.

Quartzsite, AZ.By Oney Budge We would like to Thank and intro-duce Our Silent Donors for their gra-cious gifts for the fund raising Raffl e prizes that bring hundreds of dollars for our community. Each year Robert (Earl) and his wife of 61 years Nadine Schmidt work months prior to the show on a hand-crafted wooden item. This year we have been gifted a 1930’s classic Cadillac right down to red velvet seats for its passengers. Building these wooden treasures for 20 years, Earl prefers to donate them to fund-rais-ers rather than selling them. Yet some have sold for $700 - $800 and raised thousands of dollars at auctions. Earl and Nadine have been winter visitors of Quartzsite for the past 12 years. Re-tiring as Director of Security for a Util-ity Co. and working with the National Police Society, he and his wife have traveled from Orcas Island to winter with us. Last year Earl, Hardie’s Bead and Jewelry, and Thunder Gourd Artist Pam and Tom Froom brought in $800. Come to the Art Show and enjoy the Artist Scavenger hunt, refreshments, door prizes of gift certifi cates from local businesses. Drawn every 20 min-utes! Plus, buy raffl e tickets for great gifts. This year’s Raffl e Gifts are the

1930’s Cadillac, a turquoise and silver pendant from Hardies Bead and Jewel-ry and Sunwest Silver Co. gifted Silver and Turquoise earrings to complete the Raffl e. Jewelry set valued together at $150. And an original painting by Oney Budge.

ADVENTURES WITH ROCKS

Between 60 and 90 miles northeast of Quartzsite, as the crow fl ies along Highway 60, are the Harquahala, White Tank, and Vulture Mountains. These mountains are full of minerals and exciting Wild West-type history. The towns of Aguila, Tonopah and Wickenburg form a triangle around an area also rich in unique geology due to an abundance of hot springs in the area. A local legend says that the name Tonopah derives from the native Yavapai word Tu Nohwa, which means “Hot Water Under a Bush”.

The topography in this triangular area is full of springs and wells which range

from warm at 70 to 95 degrees to hot at 110 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, Wicken-burg was booming due to the rich soils along the Hassayampa River and the wealth of gold found in the Vulture Mountains. In 1896, Castle Hot Springs near Wick-enburg became the fi rst “resort” boasting a long list of ailments that would be cured by a soak in the springs. During its height in the 1920’s and 30’s many famous and wealthy people visited the resort, including families such as the Vanderbilts and the Rock-efellers. The area known for one of the richest gold mines in Arizona also gained notoriety for its hot springs, debutantes, and celebrities.

People fl ocked to the region. Explora-tions to the south and west of Wick-enburg into the mining areas around Aguila, and the Federal Highway Program completion of US Highway 60 in 1922, brought more settlers to the Harquahala, White Tank, and Vul-ture Mountains. With the discovery of many rich mineral deposits and several hydrothermal veins in the mountains, Tonopah was born in the early 1900’s and became a center for hot spring resorts by 1911. During its boom, there were as many as fi ve hot springs re-

sorts operating in Tonopah. One of the most popular and well known of these is El Dorado Hot Springs.

But the wealth and uniqueness of this area encompasses more than the occurrence of hot springs and large deposits of precious metals. In fact, the unusual combination of these two features creates a ripe environment for the mineral fl uorite to occur. Flou-rite is found in hydrothermal veins containing lead, zinc, silver and other metallic ores. Fluorite occurs in all col-ors, including colorless, white, purple, blue, red, pink, orange, yellow, brown, green, gray, and black, and may also be multi-colored and banded. It is one of the most varied colored miner-als in the mineral kingdom, and the colors may be very intense and almost electric. Pure Fluorite is colorless, but color variations are caused by various

impurities, like hydrocarbons. Fluorite is one of the more famous fl uorescent minerals and many specimens strongly fl uoresce with a great variation of color. In fact, the word “fl uorescent” is derived from the mineral Fluorite.

Fluorite occurs throughout the world, with some of the most notable North American locations found in the Niaca Mine in Mexico, the Rock Candy Mine in British Columbia, Canada, and here in our beloved desert Southwest. Though Fluorite was fi rst discovered in Germany in 1529, one of the fi rst ore bodies found in Arizona to contain Fluorite was in 1890 at the Diamond Joe and Purple Passion Mines near Wickenburg. The U.S. also produces numerous fi ne occurrences in loca-tions like the Blanchard Mine in New Mexico, and the highly collectible specimens from Hardin Co., Illinois. Beautiful teal blue, green, and purple fl uorite is also found in the Bighorn Mountains between Tonopah and Aguila, just off Eagle Eye Road. There are plenty of old mines, hot springs, and an abandoned Flourospar mine in that area so allow extra time to explore while there.

For more information and maps to the fl uorite collecting areas near Aguila, come to RocksInMyHead. We are located at A37 in Rice Ranch, 605-376-8754, and we are open 7 days a week from 10am to 5pm. We have the beautiful blue and green fl uorite from near the Eagle Eye Rd. site, and some very pretty purple and rainbow fl uorite from New Mexico available, as well as lots of great rocks, fossils, minerals, and gemstones. We have everything you need for rockhound-ing, prospecting, and lapidary, as well as books, maps, and more. Like us on Facebook or visit us online atRocksInMyHead.com.

Voices from The Pastin Quartzsite, AZ

In January of 1937 the snow in Flag-staff had been steadily coming down for three days. Snow was piled high along the streets and out on Highway 89. For employees of the Coconino National Forest where my husband Charles and father-in-law, affectionately known as “Mr. Oldham” worked, there was little they could do. Mr. Oldham, chief of the Northern Coconino National Forest and Charles, a fi re guard, decided to use the furlough to make a trip down to the desert near La Paz where the family had a placer claim, the Jack of Diamonds. They packed their gear and waited for the blizzard to let up. It didn’t so they announced they would leave for Quartzsite early the next morning.

Being a bride of three months I wasn’t sure how to go about inviting myself on the trip. When I told my father-in-law that I would give anything to not have to shovel a path to the clothesline to hang our wash that would freeze before I could put the clothespins on he said, “Pack light Rosalee, we don’t have much room.” As we pulled away from the Nob Hill Ranger Station, in the warmth of the pickup, the early morning twilight was actually beautiful. Hanging from the eaves of homes were long shiny icicles. The snow was still coming down, bend-ing the branches of the tall evergreens with a heavy accumulation of sparkling white snow. Out on U.S. 89 the drifts were deep and we stopped to pull sever-al vehicles out of the snow. All the way out to Williams the blowing snow was blinding. Not until we reached Chino Valley did the storm begin to let up. We arrived in Quartzsite as the sun was setting behind the Dome Rock Moun-tains. The pale blue sky was brightly streaked in shades of bright orange, yel-low, and mauve. The soft purple of the Middle Camp Mountains was growing darker by the minute. When we pulled off onto Tom Wells Road, the pickup brushed against a forest of bright green-ish-yellow bushes emitting a pungent fragrance. Charles saw my nose twinge, “Greasewoods,” he announced. This city girl had a lot to learn. Stepping out of the pickup onto warm ground, I was in love with the desert.

Desert Kangaroo Hotel

No frozen fi ngers, no slipping on ice, or vehicles making 180s in the street. Mr. Oldham made a campfi re causing the coyotes to serenade us until the iron-wood coals went dim. The next morn-ing I was awakened by the cackling of a covey of Gambel’s quail passing by. Lat-er, when I tried to locate the source of a distinct cooing sound, Charles pointed to a pair of white-winged doves perched in an ironwood tree. Mr. Oldham stoked the coals and added some wood as Charles set out two Dutch ovens; one for bak-ing powder biscuits and the other for bacon, fried potatoes, and scrambled eggs. Charles and his dad left for the diggings and I stayed behind to wash dishes. Later I went to watch Charles dig down to bed-rock and fi ll another bucket with sand and gravel for Mr. Oldham to dump into the dry washer. As my father-in-law furiously turned the crank, I wondered out loud how he was going to spot any gold in that fast-mov-ing dirt. Mr. Oldham simply said, “You just can’t take your eyes off the riffl es.” When he left to get another bucket, I asked if I could turn the crank with the hope of fi nding a nice little nugget or two. I was curious about the workings of the dry washer and promised to keep my eyes on the riffl es. A couple of days later, Charles dug into the den of a Kangaroo rat all curled up and fast asleep for the winter. When there’s no food and the temperature falls below a certain point, Kangaroo rats go into a state of dormancy. This little rat had a large head in comparison to the rest of its compact body. It had tiny ears and big black eyes with long eyelashes. The top of its head and body were a grayish-tan with the area around its eyes, back of its ears and undersides were white. From head to tail, which was mostly tail, this little Kangaroo rat was about 8-inches long. Its long,

slender tail gradually darkened towards the end where it puffed out into a fl uffy white brush at the tip. Its hind legs were long and powerful with claws that could be used to defend its den. When sitting on their back legs, if they see something they want, can jump as high as 30 inch-es. Kangaroo rats keep their shorter front legs hidden under their throat un-less reaching for food which is stuffed into fur-lined cheek pouches on each

side of its mouth.

I took the little critter back to camp and offered it some pinion nuts that Charles and I had picked near our post on Hutch Mountain Lookout in the Coconinos, which it eagerly ate from my hand. I found a large empty tomato can that I stuffed with one of Charles’ handkerchiefs and let the little mouse down easy. It curled right up and went back to sleep. When I told Mr. Oldham and Charles about our tomato can house guest, Mr. Oldham just shook his head and raised his very dark eyebrows as a broad grin spread across his face. The next morning after Charles and his dad went back to the diggings I crushed some dry bread and took my little friend out of the tomato can to see if it was in-terested. After fi nishing off the crumbs it proceeded to explore around camp. From time to time it would dart back into the tomato can, then venture out and follow me around as I offered it more things to eat.

One Friday, the Desert Singles held their weekly potluck at the Town Park. I had heard about nearby Celia’s Rain-bow Garden, and after lunch Doris sug-gested we go there. Doris loved the gar-den and went there often. She told me the garden was created by volunteers in memory of a local girl who passed away at age eight. I later learned that her parents are the multi-talented Paul Winer, owner of Reader’s Oasis Books, entertainer extraordinaire, and creator of the clever “Desert Daze” comic strip which I look forward to in every Des-ert Messenger; and Joanne Winer, well known for all her many volunteer ef-forts in town. Like most volunteer projects, the gardens started small but has grown into a very large area. There are paths throughout the gardens and a longer walking trail around it with exercise equipment. People have adopted small pieces of land within the gardens to de-velop and care for. The garden is dedi-cated to Celia’s memory, but there are plots dedicated to others within the garden. (Don’t worry; no one is buried there.) It is truly amazing and certainly the highlight of my visit to Quartzsite. The variety, creativity, and beauty of the plots astounded me, and the obvi-ous love that went into caring for the individual plots touched my heart. In the days that followed, I went there sev-eral times on my own. One evening, I drove to Celia’s Gar-dens about 5:30 p.m. In Quartzsite, you can often fi nd me walking at sunset. I found the long path around the gar-den’s perimeter. I noticed the exercise stations along the way, but I’d already worked out that day and would be going dancing that night; so I didn’t do them. I was the only one on the path, and I en-joyed the solitude. The sunset was just beginning. As I walked along the path, I was again reminded of how much I love Quartzsite. I breathed in the clean air, observed the changing shadows on the surrounding mountains, reveled in the sweep of open desert, and looked for-ward to the oncoming sunset. When I fi nished the trail around 6:00 p.m., I sat at one of the picnic tables and

Traveling with Gypsy Jane

waited for the universe to do its sunset “thang.” The mountains to the east, op-posite the setting sun, were glowing, but the shadows were quickly creeping up the sides. They were pinkish tan on top and dark brown near the bottom. Straight ahead, the sky was a mixture of baby blues and cotton-candy pinks under a gray layer which spanned the enormous sky. The setting sun could no longer be seen, but there was no doubt where it had been because of the bril-liant neon-orange glow in the west. I have always loved and appreciated sunsets. They, more often than not, leave me speechless and in awe of their beauty -- always changing, always different, no two ever the same. I usually time my daily walk about sunset time. Tonight in Quartzsite, I felt I discovered sunsets for the fi rst time. Before tonight, I always thought the sunset was just in one place -- where the sun set -- but in Quartzsite tonight, in Celia’s Gardens, I realized that REAL sunsets cover all four direc-tions and the entire sky. Celia’s Garden is a truly awesome place, and I will al-ways remember it as the place where I REALLY discovered sunsets.

~*~*~*~*~*~I’m trying to remember one spectacular sunset, so hard to capture its beauty in words: fl orescent orange interspersed with baby blue topped by a row of small, wispy, gray clouds like water-falls, and higher up a layer of narrow, gray clouds with the brightest magenta lining I’ve ever seen. As I watched, the magenta got more and more intense -- just streaks of vibrant color like some-one had taken a paintbrush across the sky. As the night progressed, the colors faded until only the faintest dusky- melon hue remained on the horizon.....Gypsy Jane from my Journal July 6, 2002, Port Angeles, Washington

A Kangaroo rat’s diet is mostly air-dried seeds. They actually shun green food and even water because their bod-ies have a complex chemical process which creates water from the digestion of dry food. They have evolved to with-stand desert conditions in southern New Mexico, Arizona and California. They don’t perspire and on hot days simply hide out in their burrows after plugging the door with dirt. My little friend continued to lodge in our Desert Kangaroo Hotel until the morning we left for home. I took the little rat in its tomato can hotel back near the burrow where we had found it. He bounded into the burrow and was gone. I had learned a lot about plants, ani-mals and insects on my fi rst visit to the desert and I could cook a meal in a Dutch oven including some darned-good biscuits. The following winter we came back during another furlough but this time Charles and I didn’t go back to Flagstaff. Judge Mott offered to sell us his bee business and I stayed on for another 70 years. The last time I saw a Kangaroo rat was one evening in 1959 when our family was eating watermelons in the yard and two little rats were busy gath-ering seeds as we spit them out. So we put up our feet up and quietly enjoyed watching them stuff their little pouches with seeds. What a delight!

By Joanne Winer Paul Carnevale, son of Tony and Cee Carnevale, came to Quartzsite in the early 1990’s to visit his folks, and like a lot of people who come to our won-derful town, he ended up staying!! Paul started out working for Everett’s Towing, and ended up marrying the bosses daughter Tammy Smith, whose parents Everett and Jeannette have owned the business in Quartzsite for many years. Paul and Tammy have two teen-agers now--Vinny and Emily, and they have been very active in their children’s schools and supportive of their activities like 4-H and bands, etc. Paul has been working at the sta-tion since November of 1994, when it was a Texaco station. He has worked there ever since, watching it change to a Shell Station and now a 76 Station. A lot of changes have happened over the years, and Paul credits his fel-low employees, especially those who have worked there for many years like himself-for making his job so much easier and for their loyalty to him as manager. He says he will miss them all, and wishes them all the best. He thanks them as well as all his steady customers for making his job such a pleasure, and wishes only the best for the new manager, Gary Lacouture. Gary is a former military man from California, and is now the new man-ager of the station.

Paul Carnevale retires from Q-Check (now 76 Station) after 20 years

Paul and his dad Tony fi rst started the Cruise Ins, with support from own-er Barrett Covington over three years ago. Barrett and his wife Pattie have been in business with Chris Passmore and wife Janet for many years. They own not only the station in Quartzsite, but also the Mobile station on Hwy 95 and the 76 station on Lovekin, both in Blythe. When Chris Passmore died, his son John became the new partner. New manager Gary has planned to keep the Cruise Ins going, with help from Paul and Tony. Paul has long been a vintage vehicle collector, and loves puttering around the yard working on his cars, a passion he shares with his two twin brothers back east and his father here. He has been hoping to have more time for his hobby, although he also plans to work part-time back at Everett’s helping them, and will do some work on small engine repairs as well as anything else that catches his fancy. He has also been doing security work during the season, so he may continue that as well. Whatever he does, he will do it to the best of his ability, just as he has done for the past 20 years at the Station, because that is how he is--a real hard worker with love for his com-munity, friends and family. He will be sadly missed at the Station by all who knew him, but he will still be around!!!

By Joanne Winer Anita Carlson, co-founder with her late husband Doc, has been sending packages to the troops in harm’s way for many years now, and has stated that as long as there are troops who need them, she will continue with her mission. Since Doc passed away, she has had volunteers and family members help-ing her pack up and send two boxes to each unit every two weeks every month, and some extra dur-ing special holidays. They have had as many as 10 units at a time, but are currently sending packages

to 5 units. These boxes are fi lled with non-perishable food items like peanut butter, cans of tuna, beef (no pork products allowed) chicken, turkey, and other fi sh snacks, as well as cookies, crackers, pickles (plastic bottles only) and cereal bars, granola bars, candy, jerky, canned fruit, drink mixes, coffee, creamer, etc. They also send non-food packages with books, movies, DVDs CDs, magazines, games, puzzle books, small stuffed toys, stationary items, toiletry and hygiene items, and things like socks, cool collars and more. Each one of these packages are over $15 to send, and sometimes items are needed to be purchased to fi ll the boxes. These are the biggest costs of the group, and every donation is very important--their only fundraiser is their Silent Auction in December, and

Operation Hero Comfort just re-ceived a check from the VFW Riders group from District 1, delivered to Anita by Julie Anderson--it was for $200 and this will go a long way to helping get the packages out. Anita, on behalf of Operation Hero Comfort members, accepted the check and wants to personally thank everyone who donated to it to help. By Joanne Winer The total is now $34,000--not bad for a small thrift store in the middle of the desert!! That is the current able of money that has gone back into the community through donations from the Quartzsite Community Thrift Store. At a recent board meeting, it was voted to give $500 to each of the following--Quartzsite Historical Society (Museum), Isaiah 58 Project, and Quartzsite Public Library. Thanks to the generosity of the community in donating items to sell in the store to help raise this money, the store has been able to help many local non-profi ts and organiza-tions who are underfunded get some help to keep their programs going. The volunteers at the store work very hard to get items ready for sale--customers who fl ock in love the selection of reasonably priced items, making this store a huge success. By Joanne Winer The Quartzsite Business Chamber of Commerce recently received a big surprise when Dennis Kuehl from Desert Gardens, called and of-fered them a donation of $500. to help the Chamber with anything they needed it for. The check came at a great time, since this past August 21, the Chamber lost their original trailer offi ce to a freak microburst, and they have been working hard to replace items and get back to normal again. They would like to thank Dennis and Desert Gardens for this generous donation. President Cee Carnevale said “we are so grateful for any donation that helps us get back to where we were before we lost the building this past summer, and thank everyone who has shown their support for what we do for our town.”

In the fi rst team, there are three seniors, Kirshana Guy, Porsche Gresham and Ericka Martinez. The second team has fi ve juniors, KaLynne Strobel, Esmeralda Cruz, Joel Freedman, Jacquelin Har-old, and Stephanie Claytor. These stu-dents will be solving an “open ended, realistic, math modeling problem” in just fourteen hours. The students will be participating in this on February 28 or March 1. The Student Council recently at-tended the 2015 AASC State Conven-tion from February 5 through the 7 at Apache Junction High School. This year’s theme was ‘Legends Never Die’. While there, they voted on the new state offi cers, attended various leader-ship and spirit building activates. They also participated in a service project that helped the Ronald McDonald House. ’ The Student Council members did their best to suit the theme. For example, on one day they all dressed up as famous scientists. They brought valuable information back to campus to help the student body to explore new school wide activities.

Court allows third-party claimant to take $4,050.00 from the $43,000.00 deposited with the court by defendant Jacque Nelson for

restitution to the Bouse School District.Parker, AZ - On Friday, February 6, 2015 Superior Court Judge Robert C. Olson issued the fi nal orders in State v. Nelson. The Judge ordered the distribution of the remaining $38,950.00 and vacated the fi nal restitution hearing set for later this month. The court ordered that the school district be paid in full from the sum previously deposited by Ms. Jacque Nelson. The Court also ordered that the remainder of the $43,000.00 be paid to the insurance company as partial reim-bursement, with the remainder to be paid in monthly installments when Nelson is released from prison. Ms. Nelson was convicted of two crimes against the Bouse Elementary School District pursuant to a plea agreement negotiated by County Attorney Tony Rog-ers, who said Nelson wrote herself checks from the District’s funds. For the crime of theft she will serve 1.5 years in the Arizona State Department of Corrections. For the crime of fraudulent schemes, a class 2 felony, she will serve 7 years of supervised “White Collar” probation to follow her release from prison.White Collar Probation is a strict program which requires that the probation department monitor all aspects of Ms. Nelson’s fi nancial dealings. She is pro-hibited from incurring new debts without permission and from gambling. In addition she is required to submit to a review of all her accounting records. Ms. Nelson is also required to release information for all banking accounts and tax

returns, not open new checking accounts, provide proof of all household income and pay a minimum of 10% of that household income toward restitution to the victims. She must also notify any employer of this conviction. Violation of this probation could result in an additional prison sentence of up to12.5 years. As part of the plea agreement Ms. Nelson deposited with the court clerk $43,000.00 for restitution to the victims, to be distributed between Bouse School District and their insurer, who had already covered the school’s losses in part. County Attorney, Tony Rogers stated: “The plea agreement was structured to provide justice, community safety, and restitution, compensating the Bouse School District for all of its fi nancial losses, including nearly $20,000.00 for the cost of the forensic accounting and investigation into the theft.”The Judgment, Sentencing, and Distribution Hearings were held on Friday Janu-ary 9, 2015. During those proceedings several individuals claiming to be victims of Ms. Nelson described their losses to the court. The Judge found one individu-al had a colorable claim on the funds Ms. Nelson had deposited with the court for restitution to the school. The court awarded Mr. Kirk Wilson $4,050.00.County Attorney Tony Rogers states “This was Ms. Nelson’s fi rst criminal con-viction. While prison is not the norm for a fi rst time conviction, this case was unique due to the number and severity of the offenses and victims discovered during the investigation. The seven years of White Collar probation following her incarceration insures that the community will be protected from future fi nancial crimes by Ms. Nelson through close monitoring of her fi nancial dealings. And fi -nally, the prison sentence sends the right message, that perpetrators of fi nancial crime will be held accountable in La Paz County.”

In Memoriam

Eric Paul StapletonEric Paul Stapleton passed away in Quartzsite, AZ. He had been missing for eight long months after last being seen at his residence on Riggles Road on May 18, 2014. His friends and co-workers at the local Family Dollar store sounded the alarm that Eric had not showed up for work as sched-uled. Sadly, on January 20, 2015, Eric’s remains were found by hikers in the Scaddan Wash area located east to south-east from the Town of Quartzsite. The cause of death is still under investigation.

Eric was born February 11, 1955, in Roseburg, Oregon to Don and Alyce Stapleton. He is survived by his moth-er, Alyce Stapleton of Salem, Oregon; son and daughter-in-law, Brandon and Rebecca (Ruby) Stapleton of

McMinnville, Oregon; granddaughter, Peyton; Brandon’s mother and the Love of Eric’s life, Sheree (Greenleaf) Stapleton; sisters, Valerie Vandecar of Tucson, Arizona and Lynne Staple-ton-Ybarguen of Salem, Oregon; brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Cheryl (Morris) Stapleton of Sheridan, Oregon; nieces and nephews, Jennifer Steinmetz, Hilary, Peter, and Jacob Rose; and Jessica, Christopher and Elizabeth Stapleton. He is pre-de-ceased by his father Don Stapleton.

The Family would especially like to thank the Community of Quartzsite for their continued diligence in locating Eric. We also thank Quartzsite Police Department, in particular Offi cer Horatio Tanakeyowma, for his tenac-ity, support, and patience anytime, all the time, day and night.

Eric was loved by many, and those who knew him remember his kindness and easy smile. We will miss him dearly.

A Celebration of Life for Eric will be held on February 15, 2015 in Salem, Oregon.

Astrological Perceptionsby Barbara Lee © 2015 Barbara Lee

Aries: March 21 to April 19- “I AM”You have all the power you will ever need behind you now. Your Sun in Ar-ies is part of a grand trine with Mars in Aries, Moon 29 degrees in Cancer and Saturn 4 degrees in Sagittarius. Your foundation is secure and you feel safe to express your deepest and darkest secrets that will most likely alter your belief system.

Taurus: April 20 to May 20- “I Have”The very core of your being is calling out for change and transformation on so many levels. Just take a step in any direction and life will put you where you

are needed the most. Take the time to look within, be still and take the time to listen what your heart and mind are say-ing to you! Go with the fl ow as you learn to be gentler with yourself and others.

Gemini: May 21 to June 20- “I Think”Balance speaks to you in so many ways; nature, romance, family, food and healthy ways. The answers to the ques-tions you seek are all around you. Take a moment to be present and aware of what you are feeling and you will once again feel at home with yourself and others. Things are not as bad as they sometimes seem. Find a fresh perspective.

Cancer: June 21 to July 22- “I Feel”You have foundation, intense emotion and a drive as strong as an OX. Make a plan and go for what you want and believe that it is real and it will be! This month you have the opportu-nity to clear out some past hurts and misunderstandings with your family members. You will feel like a whole new person.

Leo: July 23 to August 22- “I Will”You are a big dreamer but you have the power to manifest those dreams when you can set your ego aside and put an-other person’s needs fi rst. When you are undisciplined, egotistical, and irre-sponsible you can cause great diffi cul-ties with yourself and others.

Virgo: Aug. 22 to Sept. 22- “I Analyze”You can spend your time and money lavishly on others when you have it. Your greatest service is to help oth-ers when they turn to you for help and guidance. This month you will be very practical and helpful when it comes to being of service to those you really care about. Now is a great time to get clear about what is really important to you!!!

Libra: Sept. 23 to Oct. 22/23- “I Balance”There will be many important changes in your home environment this month, it is up to you how you handle this mis-fortune. You can defi nitely turn this situation into a fortunate experience. If there is something that you need

to let go of; now is the time to release what ever is not for your highest and greatest good.

Scorpio: Oct. 23 to Nov. 21/22- “I Transform”Recently you have been driven to your knees in the amount of emotional pain you have gone through, you now know there is no changing the past and that the future is only a dream waiting to be realized. Going to the depths of your soul is the solace that helps you keep a positive perspective on your life.

Sagittarius: Nov. 22 to Dec. 21- “I Perceive”This month you have chosen to take a ride on the wild side of life like nev-er before. You will be protected and shown things and avenues of being that you have only heard of but never experienced. You are ready to walk through the door of expression into unknown worlds and altered states of consciousness.

Capricorn: Dec. 22 to Jan. 19- “I Use”The choices you make on a daily basis have to do with work and relationships, you get more fulfi lled from work than you do from your partnership. You can keep doing and playing the game, but sooner or later reality and the need to be honest will catch up with you. De-cide to be happy.

Aquarius: Jan. 20 to Feb. 19- “I Know”This is the month where you decide to communicate your truth; you will hold nothing back!Declare to the Universe what you want and intend to receive it. Life is just about to become even more amazing than you ever thought possible. You have tuned into some profound vibrations that are changing your life for the better, trust and allow it to happen.

Pisces:Feb. 19 to March 22- “I Believe”This month your gift to the world is an understanding heart, and a solid bank account with money to burn. You are in a healing cycle that can regenerate every area of your life, and then what? You keep your energy moving and help-ing people feel better, an endless cycle of improvement.
