President’s MessageBy Nancy Nunan, President

As usual with the Fall and Winter seasons, it’s been a very busy time. The snow birds have been returning. The Park has had one of the largest sale of homes in many years, 58. Trying to keep up with the renters has also been very diffi cult. We need to remind members that anyone who has been in Desert Crest Park 15 days or longer must be interviewed. This is part of the Park’s C.C.&R’s. It is also necessary in case of an emergency. If you are aware of someone residing here in violation of the C.C.&R’s, please let the Board know.

We are also trying to keep in compliance with the Riverside County animal codes and regulations. All dogs and cats, off their owner’s property, must be on leashes. We are hoping to abide by the County rules to minimize the County’s

enforcement of animal licensing.

The Board is happy to reintroducing an article that used to appear in the Desert Crest newsletters. Starting next newsletter, Virgilia Becker will be interviewing Desert Crest residents, with their permission, that are 90 years or older. In the past we have discovered many interesting life stories. If you know someone that should be interviewed, please let us know. We are hoping this feature will become one of your favorites, too.

One last reminder. If you haven’t returned your ballot(s), please do so as we don’t want to mail the ballots again. This is very expensive.

The President’s message for the New Year; “Have a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous 2020!”

Desert Crest Men’s Golf 2019

The Desert Crest Country Club Men’s Golf League started No-vember 1, 2019. A growing num-ber of players signed up this year to compete for more than a doz-en prizes given out each week. The most coveted award is low gross. Club members with the low-est score in their fl ight include:

Flight “A” David Patron (3), Jim Gled-hill (2), Mark Johnson, Ray Tokareff

Flight “B” Robin Johnson (2), Didi-er Toutain, Doug Gray, Roger Dob-son, John Nielsen, Dennis Knapp

Flight “C” Mike Salois (2), Shinichi Yoshikawa, Patrick Spiger, Bill Deal, Arnie Dagner, Lance MacCarty.

Golfers also compete for closest to the pin by fl ight. Herb Turnquist stands out as having been more ac-curate than others several times this fall. Jim Woodland bested the entire group with longest putt a couple of times. These awards have been distributed pretty evenly among the rest of the group as all others won only once. The kitty for getting a hole-in-one is growing but no one has claimed this prize yet this sea-son.

Men’s Club plays tournaments in addition to weekly play. Members competed in a One Club and a Put-

ter. Ray Tokareff won fi rst place with an amazing 50 strokes over eighteen holes wielding an ancient hickory stick. Deane Cooper’s one under par was only good enough for second place. David Patron took third with par.

The December 9 One Club Tour-nament was played in three fl ights. Low Gross winners were David Pa-tron in Flight A, Herb Turnquist in Flight B, and Mike Salois in Flight C.

Men’s League plays every Friday of the season through the end of April. Membership is open to all renters and owners. It only takes three league games or three rounds with a member to establish a hand-icap and compete in your skill level. Rates have not changed, as they are $3.00 for the day, $12.00 month-ly or $50.00 for the season.

Club offi cers this year are:

David R. Wallace - President

Mike Salois - Vice President

Robin Johnson - Secretary/Treasurer

John Nielsen - Handicap Chairman-

Ray Tokareff - Tournament Chairman

Tuesday Morning Ladies Golf 2020By Marla Williams

We have had a great start to our season! Lots of good golf and two fun tournaments on a well- groomed course . The fi rst was using a favorite club and a putter. It certainly proved to be fun, interesting and challenging.

On December 16th we held our “Jingle Bell Rock Tournament”. Congratulations to our winners, Susan Woodland,: Low Score, Sue Gledhill, closest to the pin and Becki Phipps for the longest putt. With everyone in a holiday mood, the play was followed up by a luncheon at the Escena Golf Club.

We welcome back those just arriving and new ladies wanting to play for the remainder of the season.

Mixed Doubles Golf/Jack and Jill- 2019Jim Woodland, Coordinator

Mixed GolfIt is another successful start to the season for Mixed Golf. Our Wednesday morning turnout has been averaging between 17-24 golfers. Teams are divided so that all skill levels are mixed up, and everyone has the opportunity to be competitive and have fun. This league plays the game of Best Ball. All the players hit and the next shot is determined by the “best ball”. All the team players play again from this point. The game moves quickly and allows everyone to be involved. Couples can play together, on request, or play separately and take advantage of meeting new golfers.Play starts each Wednesday morning at 8:30am. If you are interested in playing, please come out before 8:15 so that teams can be made up. The cost per person is $1.25. All monies are returned to the golfers in the form of prizes for top team scores. Longest Putt, and closest to the pin for both men and women on their designated holes also win prizes. We look forward to seeing you there.

Jack and Jill GolfJack and Jill Golf takes place on the last Sunday of each month. Like Mixed Golf, the game is Best Ball. The diff erence between the Sunday game and the regular Wednesday game is that people sign up as couples and you golf with your partner.Again, we look forward to your participation. The cost is $1.25 per person with all monies returned to the golfers in the form of prizes. Please arrive by 12:45 so that teams can be made up for the 1 pm start.Whether you are a regular golfer or new to the sport, Mixed Golf is an excellent opportunity to meet your neighbors and enjoy yourself on the golf course. We hope to have you come out to join us.Congraulations to David Patron who had a hole-in-one on Hole #8.

Desert Crest Shuffl eboardBy Patrick Spiger

The Desert Crest Shuffl eboard Club has had a great time this fall. We have two teams that compete with other clubs throughout the Coachella Valley. One club is the Desert Crest Shuffl ers and regularly has about twelve competitors at a match. The other team is High 10 and they have about 8-10 competitors at matches. We also had several members compete in a Singles tournament for District 5 on December 3rd. We were fortunate to have three winners; Cynthia Amer was one of the Women’s champs and both Val McDougall and Ronnie McMillin won consolation matches.

Desert Shuffl ers win/loss record so far is the following: November 13th; won 7/ lost 5. November 20th ; won 6/ lost 6. December 11th; won 5/ lost 7. Total 18 wins/ 18 losses.

High 10- win losses so far: November 14th; won 5/ lost 7. November 21st; won 5/ lost 7. December 12th; won 5/ lost 7. Total wins 15/ 15 losses.

We also have a wonderful time having “fun night” at our shuffl eboard home courts on Tuesday nights

at 6:30 PM. All are welcome and typically we have 15 to 18 people show up enjoy a casual series of matches. Anyone can attend every Tuesday night.

Sixteen club members came to the courts this Monday morning, December 23rd with their $1 wager. Some shots were amazing and nearly all the scores were close as leads changed surprisingly in the last frame in several games. We all felt greatly entertained on a rainy Monday morning. The Desert Crest Shuffl eboard Club Holiday Tournament fi nalists will play on Thursday December 26th. Ronnie McMillan will play Val McDougall for the Championship and a $10 prize. Bill Deal will play Fred Hayes simultaneously for the Consolation and a $6 prize.

Current offi cers are: Patrick Spiger, President/ Bill Deal, Vice President/ George Parker, Treasurer/ Linda Nielsen, Treasurer

Val McDougall and Fred Hayes beat out 14 other shuffl eboard club mem-bers to receive cash prize from Pres-ident Patrick Spiger Thur. Dec 26. Val won championship and Fred won consolation.

Glad to let you know our remodeled kitchen work is completed and it looks good and is useable again. Feel free to drop by and check it out. Our next updating project will be the library and game room. Both rooms will be thoroughly cleaned, repainted and new bookcases installed in the library to get them up to code, plus some moving around of furniture and information. The library will be fi rst and begin in mid January.

I invite all residents to give me suggestions about cleaning up the exterior grounds of our facilities. We have a new American Flag and California Flag which we are putting at the entrance. If anyone is interested in having their home state or country fl ag fl own, please contact me and we will talk about it. If you are an artist or inclined

in landscaping and specialties on outside designs, please contact me with your suggestions by obtaining a form on the desk in the clubhouse lobby and dropping off at the offi ce where I will pick them up. I really want to get the entryway to the main clubhouse updated - if you can paint a mural - we have the space. Other ideas? Please send them in so we can consider them.

Soon we will be replacing the lights on the palm trees up the main drive and work on repainting the parking stripes for the parking lots. These projects are now in development.

Just to keep the rumor mill to a minimum I want you to know that I have had an emergency come up with my health which is going to require surgery. This surgery will be done the day after Christmas and

Desert Crest Recycle Program By Robin Johnson

Thank you, park residents for putting out water bottles and aluminum cans with the CRV label. Your contribution in the past year helped pay for kitchen remodeling and other clubhouse items.

Special recognition goes out to a member of the recycle team, Tim Omdahl. Tim and his wife Bonnie bought a house on Morningside less than a year ago, and Tim has been going out of his way to meet people and fi nd ways to help. You may have seen Tim drive by your house on Monday morning in his bronze truck with those attractive hand-made side racks. Tim and I are looking for your cans and bottles put out separately from the Burrtec trash—preferably nearer your house.

I will not be taking calls for a few days following. I will be available by phone or text but not around much for the next two weeks. With that, I want to thank Warren Minder for helping me through these fi rst 90 days and the maintenance staff as we have learned to work together. In addition, a special thanks to Warren Minder, Ed Lanning and Nancy Nunan for helping me out while I recover.

Thanks to Jessica, the DCCA Board, all the clubs and residents who have donated, volunteered and worked hard to get our new kitchen done and restocked. A very special thanks to our maintenance staff , Silvino, Flabio, Eddy and Ray who worked very hard to make it work and to meet deadlines. It was well worth it.
