Notes for MARTHA ANN BREWER:
A Little Pioneer of 1853
From a handwritten manuscript by Clara Crowe Gose, copied in 1969 by Geneva Zoe Bass Dimmick
"Mrs. Martha Ann Crowe, the subject of this sketch, was born January 15, 1843, at Spring Hill, Arkansas. She was the oldest child of William Alexander Brewer and Margaret Isobel Scott Brewer. Her father's people came originally from Wales and settled in Virginia. Mr. Brewer was a quiet, intrepid man; a great student of the Bible and strong in his convictions. Keeping the Sabbath was so rigorously observed that the children never went for a walk upon that day excepting to go to and from church. Margaret Isobel Scott, (Mrs. Crowe's mother) was born in South Carolina, and grew to womanhood in Georgia, where she received her education in one of the Female Seminaries of the old South. She was the first cousin of General Winfield Scott of South Carolina and Georgia (1). When a young woman of 21 years she moved with her parents to Spring Hill, Arkansas, where she met and married William A. Brewer. Both Mr. Brewer and Miss Scott's parents had brought their slaves with them to Arkansas, and upon the marriage of their children gave them a Negro man and woman for helpers. From the first, little Martha had a Mammy who loved and cared for her. Being the oldest of five boys and five girls, Martha became a thoughtful, helpful child. She had no text books but the Bible and a good dictionary. Her Bible was much loved and almost literally committed to memory.
Being in new territory Martha's only teachers were her parents until they came to Oregon in 1853. Girls of the South were early taught to weave, sew and cook and Martha's mother was most proficient in these arts. So Martha's days were busy ones. Altho a child of the South she was a "natural born abolitionist" and one of her questions was: Why do the Negro women have to work in the cotton fields and we can stay in the shade!
On March 1, 1853, with her parents, and several young brothers and sisters, (she) began the long journey to Oregon. They were eight months on the trip and endured many hardships. During the journey Mrs. Brewer gave birth to a son. The train in which they traveled stopping only for night as usual. Indians were constantly stopping them and begging or demanding food.
Toward the end of their journey while traveling through Southeastern Oregon their train was attacked by Indians. The men used their guns to good effect but the Indians continued to follow them. Finding a favorable situation they attacked the train with great fury.
Mr. Brewer had the only carriage and span of mules in the train, and placing his wife and small children in the carriage he solemnly told his wife that if he were killed and the Indians broke through the barricade of wagons, for her to whip the mules and drive for their lives to the nearest settlement, which was 50 miles west. But the Indians, being again beaten, they pursued their way through the Rogue River Valley and Grants Pass into Southwest Oregon. Thence north to Eugene where they took up land and lived until 1860. In 1857 Martha Ann Brewer was married to William Perry Crowe, a pioneer of 1851-2 and a veteran of the Indian War of 1855-6. Mr. Crowe attended Willamette University in the fall of 1852, and was several years a student there.
The president of Willamette University at that time being Rev. Francis Hoyt D.D., L.L.D.
After Mrs. and Mrs. Crowe's marriage, he pursued the occupation of teaching for about twelve years and he and Mrs. Crowe had many thrilling experiences traveling about from place to place.
Having gone north to Grand Mound, Washington, to visit Mrs. Crowe's people who had moved there after the death of Mr. W. A. Brewer, they were called back to Corvallis on account of the illness of Mr. Crowe's mother. The roads were so bad he concluded to send his young wife and their little daughter of four years and a son of one year by Indian canoes and he would drive over the rough muddy roads. He engaged two Indians to row them down the Cowlitz River, thence up the Columbia to the mouth of the Willamette, thence up the Willamette to Harrisburg where they were met by a team and could proceed to Corvallis to the old donation claim of Mr. Crowe's father, W. R. Crowe. The swollen rivers, and fear of the Indians, (who were perfectly peaceable) made this one of Mrs. Crowe's most trying experiences.
On account of Mr. Crowe's health, they moved to Eastern Oregon in 1870. After spending a short time near the present town of Athena they moved to Milton where they took up a homestead and she lived there until several years after the death of her husband in 1900. Mrs. Crowe retained a part of their homestead until 1920, when she sold it. Mr. and Mrs. Crowe were the parents of eleven children. All of these lived until manhood or womanhood excepting one, George E. Crowe died at the age of 6 years, in the first epidemic of diphtheria which swept Milton in 1878. Immediately following his burial and while the Crowe family were in quarantine occurred the last outbreak of the Indians in this part of the country. Neighbors mounted guard day and night for several days -- not daring to come into the house. The chief characteristics of Mrs. Crowe were deep piety, a great desire for knowledge and a love of humanity.
While busy with her own large household, she always found time to take care of sick neighbors and relatives. In fact, her skill in nursing became so great that she was for years called whenever children became sick and served the community "Without money and without price."
Mrs. Crowe passed away January 16, 1923 at the home of her only living son, W. F. Crowe. Her eightieth (80) birthday occurred the day before her passing. As her pastor, Dr. Brumly, of the Pioneer Methodist Church aptly put it: "She needs no monument. Her seven daughters, her son and many grandchildren are her living monument."
(1) This reference to General Winfield Scott was penciled in between the lines at a later date and perhaps by someone else. (G.D.)
