Nora S. Hoffer

Nora S. Hoffer, 96, of Elizabethtown, transitioned into eternal life on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at Brethren Village. Born in Indiana County on May 11, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Ada Wise Shank. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vere M. Hoffer, who died in 1984 and by twosisters, Mabel Brandt and Edna Mumau Auker.

Nora was a devoted homemaker who was also employed by the former W. T. Grant Co. and Heisey's Childrens Shop in Elizabethtown. She was a long time member of the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren and formerly served as a Deacon, Lay Visitor, Sunday school teacher and member of the quilting group.

Nora also enjoyed being a homemaker, cooking, gardening, traveling and spending time with her family.

She is survived by a son, James and daughter-in-law Patricia Hoffer; and two grandsons, Robert and Richard Hoffer, all of Hummelstown.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, 777 South Mount Joy Street, Elizabethtown, PA 17022 at 11:00 AM. There will be no viewing and interment will be held at the convenience of the family. Please omit flowers. Contributions may be made to her church's memorial fund.

Ethel K. Hoffer, 95, formerly of Bainbridge Street, Elizabethtown, died June 6, 2010. She was the loving wife of the late Russel M. Hoffer. Born in Penn Township, Lancaster County, she was the daughter of the late Enos B. and Katie Graybill Keller. Ethel had been employed at AMP Inc., Mount Joy, for over 20 years. She was a member of the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren and enjoyed baking, canning, and gardening, especially her roses.

She will be lovingly remember by her children, Jay Marlin (Dorothy) Hoffer, Silver Spring, FL, and Sandra Fay (Harvey) Ebersole, Hershey, and her daughter-in-law, Marion Hoffer (the late Barry Lee Hoffer), Elizabethtown; nine grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; two brothers, Charles and Wilbur Keller, both of Lititz. In addition to being preceded in death by her son Barry, Ethel had two sisters, Ruth Garman and Grace Whitcraft, pass away before her.

Born in Elizabethtown, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Alice Horn Slesser. She was married to Isaac M. Hoffer for 60 years in February.

Mrs. Hoffer was a member of Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren. She was a 1943 graduate of Elizabethtown High School. Prior to retiring, she was employed for 11 years as a cafeteria worker by Pennsbury School District in Falls Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania She was a life-member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Fred Barley Post No. 5667 and was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 329, both in Elizabethtown.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hoffer was preceded in death by two sons, Lonnie and Ronald. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Jeffrey, husband of Darlene Hoffer of Crestview, FL; a daughter, Debra, wife of Gregory Brizell of Morrisville, PA; 2 sisters, Alice, wife of William Weaver of Lebanon, and EllaJane Wilhelm of Wrightsville; 6 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren.

It should be noted that in many instances of Elizabeth's name, the spelling of her FIRST name was usually "Sara". Notes for Godfrey Miller O'Rear:The Tennessee connection is that when I was born my father was the resident manager of the Read House Hotel in Chattanooga and my parents lived in the hotel. It is still there and I have on my rather extensive list of things I want to do before I die, to spend the night there again after 76 years. Before I was one year old, my father became the manager of the Andrew Johnson Hotel in Knoxville and we lived there until I was nine.

J. Leslie (Les) Miller, age 81, of Elizabethtown, PA passed away into the presence of the Lord on Saturday, July 8, 2017. He was born Saturday, January 11, 1936.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ezra and Eva (Ruhl), Sister Charlene (John) Fry, Brother Melvin, Daughter Gwendolyn Joy, and Son Gregory Alan.

In addition to his loving wife, Beverly (Moore), Les is survived by his sister Lois (Richard) Hilsher, and first wife, Josie (Hoffer) Weigel.

Jill called 911 for her a few weeks ago and Lois had been in the hospital for a couple weeks in early October due to fluid retention and heart complications. They found she had not been taking her Lasix medication. They got her stabilized and released her to a nursing facility. She was there for a few days and was released to home on Saturday, October 22, 2011. Jill said she felt they released her too soon.

Lois told everyone she would be fine. She had a walker and was reminded that she needed to use the walker anytime she moved around the house.

This past Saturday, October 29, 2011, she went into the bathroom (without her walker) and used the facilities. She couldn't get back to the bedroom so she allowed herself to "fall" off of the commode and crawl to a phone and called her grandson, Brandon, who Jill indicated lives "just around the corner". He came to the house and carried her to her bed. The family stayed with her all afternoon and evening. She said she was fine and Jill and the children went home.

On Sunday, her neighbor came to visit and found her on the floor of the kitchen.She called 911 and they took her to the hospital. This was early morning, around 6:30AM.Jill's son went to the hospital with the ambulance and called Jill and told her that the hospital needed the "living will" paperwork. Jill lives about an hour away and before she could get to the hospital, Lois had died.

Lois has told Jill (in no uncertain terms) that there is NOT to be a funeral or memorial service. Jill is making arrangements with a funeral home for burial in a plot next to Dwayne that Lois has purchased and paid for, with the burial to be as soon as possible. All of her final arrangements appear to have been at least made known. Not sure how much has been paid for (other than the burial plot) and how much has yet to be handled. (I might be mistaken on that)

Jill will be taking the next couple days off from work to make the arrangements.She will keep in touch but doesn't know of anything that is specifically to be given to "our family". She has "pre-given" her "Sleigh" bed to Jill's children.Jill will let us know of any family photos, etc that she finds as she goes through books and other things but that will not be immediately.

I told Jill that we would let everyone in our family know of the death and the "no funeral" situation.

Gwendolyn Joy Miller, 46, of 1347C Spencer Avenue, Lancaster, PA, formerly of Elizabethtown, died Friday at her residence.

Born in Elizabethtown, PA, she was the daughter of J. Leslie Miller of Elizabethtown and Josie R. Hoffer Weigel of Greencastle, Pennsylvania She was the step-daughter of Denver J. Weigel of Greencastle. A 1977 graduate of Mifflin Street School, Gwen enjoyed attending church and singing gospel songs and hymns. While living in Elizabethtown, she attended The Alliance Church of Elizabethtown. She enjoyed sharing her life with children, especially her many nieces and nephews. She found joy in talking with the employees of Fulton Bank, Zimmerman's Restaurant in Lancaster, and local shops.

Gwen was a client of Goodwill Industries in Lancaster for many years. In addition to her parents and step-father, she is survived by three brothers, Stephen J., h/o Marie L. of Milton Grove, PA, Kevin J., h/o Tammy L. His grandchildren who will always remember his quiet spirit, include Cody (fiance’ Amanda Royer), Kelsey (Justin) Hoffmaster, Erin Wolf, Nathaniel, Ben, and Josh Kofalt, Brittany (Corey) Downing, Alexis (Nicholas) Ketterman, Hannah, Mitchel, and Jadon Miller. He just became a great-grandfather to his first great grandson Lincoln Hoffmaster.

A native of Elizabethtown, he graduated from Milton Hershey School in 1954, and began his employment at an early age at Aberdeen Mills. During his teen years, he enjoyed showing beef cattle at the PA Farm Show earning ribbons and awards. Later, he was a salesman selling Turkey Hill Ice Cream products throughout the surrounding counties for many years. He also retired from maintenance work as an employee of Sprint. Les was an avid outdoorsman, and also enjoyed classic cars.

Les was a faithful and active member of Cedar Hill Community Church. This tough, hardworking peacemaker has met his Savior.

The family will receive friends at Goods Mennonite Church, 4374 Bossler Rd., Bainbridge 17502, where a funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be from 10 - 11 a.m. Rev. Barry L. Hoffer, 54, of Elizabethtown, died on Monday, January 14, 2008 at Lancaster General Hospital.

Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Ethel Keller Hoffer, Elizabethtown, and the late Russel Hoffer. He was the husband of Marion Neiss Hoffer. They celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary on February 15, 2007.

Mr. Hoffer was a member of Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren.

He was a structural designer for Michael Baker Engineers, Harrisburg. He was a marathon runner and tri-athlete and enjoyed biking, traveling, and was very family oriented.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Hoffer is survived by two daughters, Terra, wife of Steven Hovan, Elizabethtown, Kirstin Hoffer, Vail, CO, one granddaughter, Ella Hovan, a brother, Jay Hoffer, Silver Springs, FL, and a sister, Sandra, wife of Harvey Ebersole, Hershey.

Colorado Springs, CO, January 14, 2012 - On January 11, GMI president and CEO Michael G. O’Rear suffered a sudden heart attack. After several days in intensive care, surrounded by family and friends, Mike died this morning of complications. He was 57.

“Mike’s death is a tragic loss for all of us who considered him a close friend as well as a loss for GMI, the mission community in Colorado Springs, the US and the entire world,” said GMI board chair Jane Overstreet.

Mike was married to Laura, his partner in life and in ministry for 28 years. She served alongside him at GMI. They have four adult children, one grandson and a daughter-in-law expecting triplets later this year.

Mike was born in Andalusia, Alabama, in 1954. He attended Montana Institute of the Bible and Wheaton College, where he earned an MA in Communications in 1981. He joined the staff of the US Center for World Mission in Pasadena, California, in 1983 and was introduced to the work of GMI on that campus. Mike led GMI since 1991, when he took the reins from GMI’s founder, Bob Waymire.

Mike set the tone and direction for GMI’s contributions to the evangelical mission community, including mapping, publishing, research services and information technology. He was largely responsible for defining and implementing GMI’s key values of excellence in research and partnership with all evangelical mission leaders, especially those in the Global South.

“The GMI board with Mike’s help had agreed on contingency plans in case of an event such as this, and I am so grateful to announce Bill Dickson has stepped graciously into the role of Acting CEO with the full support of the board,” said Overstreet. “Even this week, he has made many wise decisions on behalf of the ministry that reflect his 28 years of history with GMI and close involvement in its leadership.”

“Mike gave selflessly to create an environment where we could do research, mapping, and publishing work without worrying about a vast array of funding and administrative details,” said longtime friend Bill Dickson, Acting CEO of GMI. “He came to GMI as a researcher, hoping to do the work himself, but ultimately found he could have more effect for the Kingdom by enabling others all around the world to do the work he so deeply believed in.”

Michael G. O'Rear, 57, passed away from a sudden heart attack on January 14, 2012, in Colorado Springs, CO. Mike was born in Andalusia, AL, on October 30, 1954, to Godfrey and Elizabeth O'Rear. He was the second of four children. Mike married Laura Ellen Fry on October 30, 1982. They raised four children: Stephen, Samuel, Joseph and Ellie. Mike received a degree in Pastoral Studies at Montana Institute of the Bible and earned an MA in Communications from Wheaton College (IL). After marrying Laura, he served as an Associate Pastor at First Baptist Church (Winnett, MT). Mike and Laura found their lifelong call while at the US Center for World Mission in Pasadena, CA, in 1983 when they joined the newly formed Global Mapping (GMI). Mike served for 28 years in the ministry and became President of GMI in 1991 when the ministry moved to Colorado Springs. Mike also served on the D20 school board from 2003-2007. He attended Covenant Presbyterian Church, where he was a beloved Sunday school teacher. Mike was preceded in death by his mother Elizabeth, his mother-in-law Maxine Fry, his infant son Andrew and his nephew Luke Fry. He is survived by his wife Laura O'Rear, his children Stephen, Samuel, Joseph (Megan), and Ellie O'Rear and grandson William O'Rear of Colorado Springs, CO; father Godfrey (Doris) O'Rear of Fitzgerald, GA; his brother David (Diana) O'Rear of Laurel, MT; his sister Connie Frank of Billings, MT; his brother Daniel (Sandy) O'Rear of Colorado Springs, CO; and countless other family and friends. Well, this plan was theticket and in 1 1/2 hrs. we had a baby ready to be born! Whew!JADON ROBERT was born at 6:12pm ...weighing in at 8 lbs. 6.5oz. and20 1/4 in. long. It was so good to FINALLY hold our baby boy after along 9.5 months! We are thankful for a healthy baby. He is a verymild and calm baby (so far !). Generation 9 (con't)Sunday morning. Labor went as good as could be expected, she needed a little help from the anesthesiologist a little later though. I was ready to be born but I was upside down and laying on my cord so I had a little trouble keeping up my heart rate when mommy tried to push. The doctor didn't want to take any chances with me, so he performed a C-section on mommy. Everything went as planned. Spent a couple of days in the hospital so mommy could heal then went to my new home.

Had a little trouble bringing in mommy's milk so I got a little dehydrated. I got bottle fed a lot of formula and electrolytes until I could be properly satisfied. Everything is good now. I was circumcised on Fri., no problems there so far.

Mommy is getting around good now, and daddy is doing good too.

They had a rough time at first, like I'm sure most new parents do, but they are getting the hang of it. I am wearing them out with my frequent feedings and diaper changes. Had a few minor problems, but looking back on it, it went pretty good
