OPERATOR SAFETY• Dress properly. Always wear safety

glasses or similar eye protectionwhen operating, or performing main-tenance, on your unit (safetyglasses are available). Eye protec-tion should be marked Z87.

• Always wear face or dust mask if op-eration is dusty.

• Always wear heavy, long pants, longsleeves, boots, and gloves. Wear-ing safety leg guards is recom-mended.

• Always wear foot protection. Do notgo barefoot or wear sandals. Stayclear of spinning line.

• Secure hair above shoulder length.Secure or remove loose clothing orclothing with loosely hanging ties,straps, tassels, etc. They can becaught in moving parts.

• Being fully covered also helps pro-tect you from debris and pieces oftoxic plants thrown by spinning line.

• Stay Alert. Do not operate this unitwhen you are tired, ill, upset or un-der the influence of alcohol, drugs,or medication. Watch what you aredoing; use common sense.

• Wear hearing protection.• Never start or run inside a closed

room or building. Breathing exhaustfumes can kill.

• Keep handles free of oil and fuel.UNIT / MAINTENANCE SAFETY• Disconnect the spark plug before

performing maintenance except car-buretor adjustments.

• Look for and replace damaged orloose parts before each use. Lookfor and repair fuel leaks before use.Keep in good working condition.

• Replace trimmer head parts that arechipped, cracked, broken, or dam-aged in any other way before usingthe unit.

• Maintain unit according to recom-mended procedures. Keep cuttingline at proper length.

• Use only 0.080 inch (2 mm) diame-ter Craftsman@ brand line. Neveruse wire, rope, string, etc.

• Install required shield properly be-fore using the unit. Use only speci-fied trimmer head; make sure it isproperly installed and securely fas-tened.

• Make sure unit is assembled cor-rectly as shown in this manual.

• Make carburetor adjustments withlower end supported to prevent linefrom contacting any object.

• Keep others away when making car-buretor adjustments.

• Use only recommended Craftsmanaccessories and replacement parts.

• Have all maintenance and servicenot explained in this manual per-formed by a Sears Service Center.

FUEL SAFETY• Mix and pour fuel outdoors.• Keep away from sparks or flames.• Use a container approved for fuel.• Do not smoke or allow smoking near

fuel or the unit.• Avoid spilling fuel or oil. Wipe up all

fuel spills.• Move at least 10 feet (3 meters)

away from fueling site before start-ing engine.

• Stop engine and allow to cool beforeremoving fuel cap.

• Always store gasoline in a containerapproved for flammable liquids.

CUTTING SAFETY

,i_ WARNING: Inspect the area be-fore each use. Remove objects(rocks, broken glass, nails, wire, etc.)which can be thrown by or becomeentangled in line. Hard objects candamage the trimmer head and bethrown causing serious injury.• Use only for trimming, scalping, mow-

ing and sweeping. Do not use for edg-ing, pruning or hedge trimming.

• Keep firm footing and balance. Donot overreach.

• Keep all parts of your body awayfrom muffler and spinning line. Keepengine below waist level. A hot muf-tier can cause serious burns.

• Cut only from your left to your right.Cutting on right side of the shield willthrow debris away from the operator.

• Use only in daylight or good artificiallight.

• Use only for jobs explained in thismanual.

TRANSPORTING AND STORAGE• Allow engine to cool; secure unit be-

fore storing or transporting in ve-hicle.

• Empty the fuel tank before storing ortransporting the unit. Use up fuel leftin the carburetor by starting the en-gine and letting it run until it stops.

• Store unit and fuel in area wherefuel vapors cannot reach sparks oropen flames from water heaters,electric motors or switches, fur-naces, etc.

• Store unit so line limiter blade camnot accidentally cause injury. Theunit can be hung by the tube.

• Store unit out of reach of children.SAFETY NOTICE: Exposure to vibra-tions through prolonged use of gaso-line powered hand tools could causeblood vessel or nerve damage in thefingers, hands, and joints of peopleprone to circulation disorders or ab-normal swellings. Prolonged use incold weather has been linked to bloodvessel damage in otherwise healthypeople. ATTACHING THE HANDLE(some units are already assembled)1. Assemble handle to the unit as

shown; make sure bottom of handleis seated in the groove in the triggerhousing.

NOTE: Knob must be assembled onthe right hand side of the unit asshown in the illustration.2. Make sure the bolt is seated in the

hex-shaped hole in the handle.3. Pivot the handle to a comfortable

properly installed. The shield providespartial protection from the risk of thrownobjects to the operator and others andis equipped with a line limiter bladewhich cuts excess line to the properlength. The line limiter blade (on under-side of shield) is sharp and can cut you.

ON/OFF SWITCHThe ON/OFF switch is used to stop en-gine. Move switch to the OFF position tostop engine.PRIMER BULBThe PRIMER BULB removes air fromthe carburetor and fuel lines and fillsthem with fuel. This allows you to startthe engine with fewer pulls on thestarter rope. Activate the primer bulbby pressing it and allowing it to returnto its original form.

START LEVERThe START LEVER helps to supply fuelto the engine to aid in starting, Acti-vate the starting system by moving thestart lever to the START position. DONOT squeeze the throttle trigger untilthe engine has started and runs. Afterthe engine starts, allow the engine towarm-up 10-15 seconds, then fullysqueeze the throttle trigger to deacti-vate the starting system.

FUELING ENGINE

_WARNING: Remove fuel capslowly when refueling.This engine is certified to operate onunleaded gasoline. Before operation,gasoline must be mixed with a goodquality synthetic 2-cycle air-cooledengine oil.

WerecommendCraftsmanbrandsyntheticoil.Mixgasolineand oil at aratio of 40:1. A 40:1 ratio is obtainedby mixing 3.2 ounces of oil with 1gallon of unleaded gasoline. Includedwith this trimmer is a 3.2 ouncecontainer of oil. Pour the entirecontents of this container into 1 gallonof gasoline to achieve the proper fuelmixture. DO NOT USE automotive oil orboat oil. These oils will cause enginedamage. When mixing fuel, followinstructions printed on container.Once oil is added to gasoline, shakecontainer momentarily to assure thatthe fuel is thoroughly mixed. Alwaysread and follow the safety rulesrelating to fuel before fueling your unit.IMPORTANTExperience indicates that alcoholblended fuels (called gasohol or usingethanol or methanol) can attract mois-ture which leads to separation andformation of acids during storage. Acidicgas can damage the fuel system of anengine while in storage. To avoid en-gine problems, empty the fuel systembefore storage for 30 days or longer.Drain the gas tank, start the engine andlet it run until the fuel lines and carbure-tor are empty. Use fresh fuel next sea-son. Never use engine or carburetorcleaner products in the fuel tank or per-manent damage may occur.See the STORAGEsection for additionalinformation.

Ifthe unit sits for more than 10 minuteswithout being ran, it will be necessaryto start the unit by following the stepsunder STARTING A COLD ENGINE orfollowing the starting instruction stepsshown on the unit,STARTING A FLOODED ENGINEFlooded engines can be started byplacing the ON/OFF switch in the ONposition. Move the start lever to theRUN position and fully squeeze throttletrigger. Pull the starter handle repeat-edly while squeezing throttle triggeruntil engine starts and runs. This

QWARNING: Always wear eyeprotection. Never lean over the trimmerhead. Rocks or debris can ricochet orbe thrown into eyes and face andcause blindness or other serious injury.When operating unit, stand as shownand check for the following:• Wear eye protection and heavy

clothing,• Hold trigger handle with right hand

and assist handle with left hand.• Keep unit below waist level.• Cut only from your left to your right to

ensure debris is thrown away fromyou. Without bending over, keep linenear and parallel to the ground andnot crowded into material being cut.

Do not run the engine at a higherspeed than necessary. The cuttingline will cut efficiently when the engineis run at less than full throttle. At lowerspeeds, there is less engine noise andvibration. The cutting line will lastlonger and will be less likely to "weld"onto the spool.

Always release the throttle trigger andallow the engine to return to idlespeed when not cutting.To stop engine:• Release the throttle trigger,• Move the ON/OFF switch to the OFF

position.TWIST AND EDGEThe Twist and Edge feature allows foreasy edging of sidewalks, patios,driveways, etc.1. Pull the tab toward the engine,2. Twist the tube to the edging posi-

TRIMMER LINE ADVANCEThe cutting head advances line au-tomatically. Do not tap head on theground to advance line. This maybreak parts and cause cutting head tomalfunction,Upon unit start up, the line will advanceautomatically to the correct cutting pathlength.Always keep the shield in place whenthe tool is being operated.

CUTTING METHODS

_WARNING: Use minimumspeed and do not crowd the line whencutting around hard objects (rock,gravel, fence posts, etc.), which candamage the trimmer head, becomeentangled in the line, or be throwncausing a serious hazard.• The tip of the line does the cutting.

You will achieve the best perform*ance and minimum line wear by notcrowding the line into the cuttingarea. The right and wrong ways areshown below.

• The line will easily remove grassand weeds from around walls,fences, trees and flower beds, but italso can cut the tender bark of treesor shrubs and scar fences. To helpavoid damage especially to delicatevegetation or trees with tender bark,shorten line to 4-5 inches (10-13cm) and use at less than full throttle.

SCALPING - The scalping techniqueremoves unwanted vegetation downto the ground. Hold the bottom of thetrimmer head about 3 inches (8 cm)above the ground and at an angle. Al-low the tip of the line to strike theground around trees, posts, monu-ments, etc, This technique increasesline wear.

MOWING - Your trimmer is ideal formowing in places conventional lawnmowers cannot reach. In the mowingposition, keep the line parallel to theground. Avoid pressing the head intothe ground as this can scalp theground and damage the tool.

SWEEPING - The fanning action ofthe rotating line can be used for aquick and easy clean up, Keep theline parallel to and above the surfacesbeing swept and move the tool fromside to side.

EDGING - Adjust trimmer to the edg-ing position (see TWIST AND EDGEsection), Allow only the tip of the lineto make contact. Do not force trimmerline into work area.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONSThe warranty on this unit does notcover items that have been subjectedto operator abuse or negligence. INSPECT AND CLEAN UNIT ANDLABELS• After each use, inspect complete

unit for loose or damaged parts.Clean the unit and labels using adamp cloth with a mild detergent.

• Wipe off unit with a clean dry cloth.CLEAN AIR FILTERA dirty air filter decreases engine per-formance and increases fuel con-sumption and harmful emissions. Al-ways clean after every 5 hours ofoperation.

1. Clean the cover and the areaaround it to keep dirt from falling intothe carburetor chamber when thecover is removed.

2. Remove parts by pressing latch torelease air filter cover.

NOTE: To avoid creating a fire hazardor producing harmful evaporativeemissions, do not clean filter in gaso-line or other flammable solvent.3. Wash the filter in soap and water.4, Allow filter to dry.5. Add a few drops of oil to the filter;

squeeze the filter to distribute oil.6. Replace parts.

REPLACE SPARK PLUGReplace the spark plug each year toensure the engine starts easier andruns better. Set spark plug gap at0.025 inch. Ignition timing is fixed andnonadjustable.1. Twist, then pull off spark plug boot.2. Remove spark plug from cylinder

and discard.3. Replace with Champion RCJ-6Y

spark plug and tighten securely witha 3/4 inch socket wrench.

4. Reinstall the spark plug boot.

LINE REPLACEMENT

Pre-weund spools offer the most con-venient method for replacing line andensuring optimum performance.• Replacement spools are color-ceded

to ensure use of the correct spool withyour unit. Be sure to use the samecolor spool as the existing spool.

NOTE: Always clear dirt and debrisfrom cutting head components whenperforming any type of maintenance.• Hold spool and unscrew cap by turning

in the direction shown on top of the cap.• Remove line guide ring and spool.

Use a pre-wound spool or refill spoolwith line. If using a pre-wound spool,remove tape strip from line and spool.REFILLING THE SPOOL WITH LINE

3. Rest guide ring on spool and placeline through slot. Allow line to ex-tend 4 - 6 inches (10 - 15 cm) fromcenter of spool.

4. Ensure line remains in slot whilescrewing cap on to the shaft. Onlytighten cap hand tight!

CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT

z__IbWARNING: Keep others awaywhen making idle speed adjustments.The trimmer head will be spinning dur-ing this procedure, Wear your protec-tive equipment and observe all safetyprecautions.

The carburetor has been carefully setat the factory, Adjustments may benecessary if you notice any of the fol-lowing conditions:• Engine will not idle when the throttle is

released.

Make adjustments with the unit sup-ported so the cutting attachment is offthe ground and will not make contactwith any object, Hold the unit by handwhile running and making adjust-ments. Keep all parts of your bodyaway from the cutting attachment andmuffler.

Idle Speed AdjustmentAllow engine to idle. Adjust speed untilengine runs without stalling (idlespeed too slow).• Turn idle speed screw clockwise to

increase engine speed if enginestalls or dies.

• Turn idle speed screw counterclock-wise to decrease engine speed.

Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alter*native in minimizing the formation offuel gum deposits during storage. Addstabilizer to the gasoline in the fueltank or fuel storage container.
