DermSoc National Day – 10th October 2018 Sophia Haywood

We hosted the second DermSoc National Day of 2018 on 10th October at the British Association of Dermatologists. Once again, there was a fantastic response and the event was oversubscribed with a long waiting list, demonstrating the ever-growing enthusiasm for Dermatology amongst students and junior doctors.

The morning began with Dr Mary Glover from Great Ormond Street sharing her expertise of Paediatric Dermatology. Professor Malcolm Rustin next provided an in depth look into pyoderma gangrenosum and Dr Manpreet Sagoo gave insightful ideas for running a DermSoc based on her experience at Kings College London. Just before lunch, Dr Bella Plumptre, who is also a DermSoc National Committee member, gave a talk on quality improvement projects, sharing useful tips and examples.

After lunch, Dr Katie Farquhar, also a committee member, gave an engaging talk on hair and nail disorders. Dr Katie Lacy of St John’s Institute of Dermatology gave a comprehensive overview of skin cancer. Kelly Almand-Chinn, a skin cancer specialist nurse, followed with expert advice on sun safety and Dr Natalia Spierings delivered the eagerly awaited ‘How to get into Dermatology’ session. The day closed with three presentations from BAD Elective Prize winners: Grace Boyd, Raymond Matthews and Ganesh Paul. Their experiences, achievements and holiday snaps were no doubt inspiring to delegates planning their own electives.

In summary, the day provided something for everyone and further insight into areas not covered in depth at medical school. We thank all our fantastic speakers once again. As always the DermSoc National Day was a pleasure to host and a wonderful opportunity to bring aspiring dermatologists together from all over the country.

The next DermSoc day will be in October 2019 in London. As each day is different, it is worth registering even if you have been to previous DermSoc national events! Please see the last page for details on how to register.

St George’s University of London DermSoc Roopa Farooki

It's been at exciting year for Dermatology at St George's medical school, University of London. We re-launched our DermSoc in Summer 2018, and recruited an amazing, dedicated team. Together, we've built an active membership of more than a hundred students, put on a series of events open to all at St George’s Hospitals and built a popular online presence on Instagram and Facebook, sharing our #LearnDerm and #SkinDeep message throughout St George's and Beyond.

Our events included a Halloween-themed Meet'n'Greet, a series of revision lectures and quizzes from Dermatology Registrars, an expert talk on Dermatology in Diverse Populations and the Developing World, sold-out OSCE practice sessions and charity bake sales. We're also working with our lecturers to improve teaching.

Our next big events will be a weekend of specialities revision lectures for 4th year students, organised with other societies, and a Surgical Skills for Skin training day for junior doctors, organised with clinicians at St George's Hospital, and sponsored by the BMA and MDU.

We hope we've got a lot of students excited about Dermatology this year. And we hope we're making a difference, too, as all profits from every event this year is going to the British Skin Foundation.

Her talk also featured elements from research focusing on what has been proven to help manage acne. She also provided a guide to help us all identify the facts from the fibs in an industry so commercialised. We had 50 attendees and the question and answer session at the end proved to be overwhelmingly popular with everyone.

Other events this year will include: tutorials for our final year and 3rd year medical students, a careers evening with consultant dermatologists and a research study group. The tutorials will focus on helping students with their spot diagnoses and pattern recognition as well as management plans for common dermatological conditions. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee for all their hard work and continued efforts with promoting dermatology as a speciality to their peers.

ICL DermSoc at the Freshers Fair

The Dermatology Society at Imperial College London continues to grow in members year on year. We kick started the year with our freshers fair stall which was fun and vibrant. There were BAD goodies and an interactive quiz for all freshers and new members.

Following this we held our successful launch event for the year “Skin and l.” Consultant Dermatologist Dr. Anjali Mahto joined us for an evening on the basics of dermatology and the layman’s guide to looking after your skin.
