Welcome to the fifth edition of the Derbyshire Institute of Sport magazine. 2014 certainly got off to an exciting sporting start as we watched the Winter Olympics in awe – and were also delighted to be able to cheer on Derbyshire's own freestyle skier James Machon, who received support from DIS ahead of being selected for Team GB. We also hope to have DIS representation at the Commonwealth Games in July. Among the hopefuls are Clay Target Shooting athletes Caroline Povey and Mike Gilligan, who have both qualified for the Commonwealth Games Training Squad. We wish them well as they work towards securing a slot in the final team.
It is almost two years since the official launch of the DIS, and it is great to see how much has been achieved in that time. The DIS exists to provide high quality support to Derbyshire's emerging talented sports performers to enable them to achieve greater success nationally and internationally, and athletes are reaping the rewards of this. My thanks go to everyone who is working hard to support the DIS and, of course, to the funding partners – Derby City Council, Derbyshire County Council and the University of Derby – together we can ensure that Derbyshire's athletes fulfil their full potential.

£60,000 hi-tech
scanner suite
opened at the
University of
Derby
A new £60,000 reception and treatment area has been opened at the Health Lifestyle and Rehab centre, at the University's Kedleston Road site in Derby, to house its £100,000 iDXA (Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scanner, which was funded by the University. The scanner's X-rays measure body composition – for example, bone density or fat to muscle ratio – to help sportspeople pinpoint specific areas which need strengthening, to improve their performance.
Elite sports clubs, including Team GB and Derby County FC, are already using the scanner for their members but keen amateur athletes looking to boost their performance can also book a scan, at a cost of £65. Team GB's Eilish McColgan, Derby County FC Strength and Conditioning Coach Steve Haines, and competitive bodybuilder and Fit Factor 2013 Champion David Bissell officially opened the new iDXA suite. Guests were then given an insight into life in top level sport through workshops with the three sportspeople. Visitors also saw a scan performed on David.
Eilish McColgan said: “I use it a couple of times throughout the year, mainly when I go to Kenya to train – I compare my body composition before I go and when I come back, using the scanner. I can't afford to lose too much weight or muscle mass, which is quite possible over there due to the high-altitude training. It is very important there is not too much differentiation. Last year, I lost too much muscle mass and it led to injury so it is hugely important that I keep an eye on it.”
Steve Haines described the scanner as a vital piece of equipment for the Derby County squad. He said: “The iDXA is a big part of our sports science testing and analysis processes. We scan the first team squad four times a season, especially around pre-season so we know what shape they are in when they return for pre-season training. We want players to have as little body fat as possible and their strength levels are important – we don't want them carrying around any fat that they don't need as it makes them more prone to injury.”
Katie Gibson, University Commercial Services Business Manager, added: “Our brand new iDXA suite will help make this top level service even more accessible for sportspeople to use. Keen amateur athletes and players of a wide range of sports will benefit from the same sports science being used to aid the performance of professionals.”

Derbyshire Talent Identification and
Development Plan is launched
The Derbyshire Talent Identification and Development Plan 2014-2017 has been launched. Delivery of the Derbyshire Talent Identification and Development Plan will ensure that all athletes with the potential to excel are identified appropriately; that identified athletes are able to access high-quality training and competition, linked to national governing body talent pathways; and that those working with athletes receive the training and information needed to identify and develop them.
Schools, colleges, school sport partnerships, the Derbyshire Schools' Sports Association, local authorities, the Derbyshire Institute of Sport, clubs and national governing bodies of sport all have an important role to play, to ensure that athletes reach their potential.
Targets include correctly identifying 180 young people per year into district talent development opportunities, hosting local disability talent camps to identify ten talented athletes with special educational needs or a disability each year, and increasing the number of sport-specific academies in the county from the existing three – for netball, basketball and golf – to ten academies in a range of sports.
More than 100 people, responsible for the delivery of sport in Derbyshire, including representatives from local authorities, national governing bodies of sport and schools, attended the launch of the plan at The Proact Stadium in Chesterfield on Thursday, December 5.

During their stay the players and coaches worked with DIS Performance Manager Andy Wood, who is former GB Badminton Performance Director.
