Welcome to our new brochure which takes you through our learning programme for Autumn 2014. Open it up fully and use it to decorate your classroom! We also highlight our wonderful world premiere of Solace of the Road, a new stage adaptation of Siobhan Dowd’s Carnegie prize winning novel in Spring 2015. We have a whole theatre-full of resources at your disposal, including our skilled and talented staff. As a Learning Theatre, we actively encourage schools explore the theatre-making process with us and share in the work that is normally kept behind closed doors. Workshops can be tailored to meet your needs and can be anything from an introduction to Physical Theatre to detailed work on devising, or designing. A CHRISTMAS CAROLWORKSHOPw/c Mon 8 December
Derby Theatre has joined forces withDerby Museums to create a wonderfulVictorian Christmas experience for KS2 pupils. We are looking for just twopioneering schools who would like toexperience this new workshop.
Pupils will meet Victorian characters inPickford’s House Museum then createtheir own scenes to be performed around this historic setting.
Pupils then come across to DerbyTheatre to watch the matineeperformance of A Christmas Carol.
The workshop is a free pilot where wewould like schools to give feedback andhelp develop the experience for otherschools.
We ask for a voluntary donation to DerbyMuseums. Tickets for the show are £9.50with every 11th ticket free.
ONCE UPON A TIMEWRITING WORKSHOP
Taking stories and fairy tales as a startingpoint, we use physical drama exercises toinspire and motivate learners to exploretheir written voice. A lively one-hourworkshop that will get your pupils thinkingabout the story and characters from apractical starting point. For KS1 and 2 – £80 plus VAT School or theatre-based

ANTIGONE LIVE PLAYBACK SESSIONThu 2 October, following the 10.30am performance
A chance to see key moments replayed with input from students to help explorecharacter, story and production elements. Led by the show’s directors.
Supports GCSE and A level students with their live theatre review. Free

During the rehearsal process the pack will be updated withinterviews, accounts of rehearsal room practice and links to online resources to enablestudents to gain an insight into the process of developing the work from page to stage.
ANTIGONE WORKSHOPS Co-produced with Pilot Theatre
Available Wed 24 September – Fri 3 October
An ideal opportunity for students to explore strong, young, urban voices in a contemporary textand adaptation of a Greek classic - by Roy Williams, one of the country’s leading playwrights.
• Rehearsal Day: Students experience working as a group of actors with the director usingboth the play and their critical responses to it as a starting point for devising their ownpieces. (Full-day)
• Essential Drama: A practical and dramatic approach, using techniques which allow for a closeexploration of the themes, form and issues of Pilot’s production of Antigone. (Half-day)
The workshops can include a presentation of the students’ work.
Drama, Performing Arts and English at GCSE, BTEC or A level.£200 for half-day workshop or £300 for two workshops on the same dayor for the full-day workshop.
YOUR VOICE – CITIZENSHIPWORKSHOPCo-produced with Face Up Theatre
With the next general election not too far away we invite young people to think aboutdemocracy and what it means to them.
Participants will be invited on a dramaticjourney of discovery during which they will have the opportunity to create their own system of government for a brand new democracy.
This workshop will develop participants’understanding of:
• The history of democracy• The workings of UK parliamentary system• Philosophical argument and debate• Rights to vote• Citizenship and personal responsibility

Plans are underway with schools and partners of the new Derby Curriculum - an innovativepilot programme that explores a creative new place-based curriculum. Working with schools,businesses and cultural organisations, we are developing a new cultural campus, whereDerby’s rich resources and history inspire young people to be a part of their city’s future.
THE NEW DERBY CURRICULUM
Start date: Tue 14 October, 5pm – 7.30pmDerby Theatre is becoming the host venue for two Schools’ Drama Networks for the city; one for secondary schools/FE and the other for primary schools. The network supports Drama/Performing Arts teachers and also primaryphase teachers to meet on a termly-basis for networking, discussions, sharingpractice, ticket offers and practical training. The networks meet separately butmay come together on occasion.
For your school to be part of this exciting and supportive new network- it will costjust £30 per teacher for the academic year and each school can have up to twoplaces. Includes two free tickets to one Derby Theatre produced show a term.

WRITING WORKSHOP FOR YOUNG PEOPLESat 11 October, 10.30am – 12.30pm
A workshop for young people looking at basic playwriting skillsand the development of exciting and dramatic characters. Thisopen session is run by Jane Fallowfield, the director of Bird, a playthat tackles hard-hitting issues for teenagers. Jane has workedat many theatres including The Royal Shakespeare Company,Birmingham Rep, The Royal Court and the National Theatre.

DERBY THEATRE - ALEARNING THEATRE Our partnership with the University of Derby means Derby Theatre is leading theway as a ‘Learning Theatre’ offering a resource for education, mentorship andartistic excellence. The academic team works alongside the Theatre team andstudents on BA (Hons) Theatre Arts, BA (Hons) Technical Theatre and MA Writingfor Performance have a truly unique learning experience based in our building. Youget to study, work and perform in a real theatre, and learn by working alongsideprofessionals on top quality performances. There are also opportunities for graduates to develop their own theatre companiesmentored by the Derby Theatre team and to take part in workshops with visitingartists of international standing. Students have recently had access to workshopsand residencies with highly regarded theatre companies Gecko and Headlong, and have worked alongside our artistic team on professional shows, Kes and The Odyssey.
