Last year, when Derby Museums Trust was formed, one of its first promises was that it would reopen the Silk Mill, so it is with great pleasure that we can announce that its doors will open soon, for the second Derby Mini Maker Faire, which will kick off a unique project where members of the public will be working alongside museum staff to fit out the ground floor and decide what exhibits will form the displays. No museum anywhere in the world has worked so closely with future visitors to ensure that they are part of the museum from the start. Read on to find out how you can join in and keep checking our website and in the press for details of dates and times of opening.

The next few months will also see us developing the Joseph Wright Study Rooms at the Museum and Art Gallery, giving everyone a chance to get up close and personal with Wright’s drawings and engravings. This will open early in 2014, following some work to improve the museum’s fire precautions.

Before that there is a rare chance to see one of the gems of the city’s collections, LS Lowry’s Houses Near a Mill – a real treat from one of the country’s best-loved artists.

And, with Christmas on its way, we can help you prepare for the festive period, with lots of Christmas decoration-making activities to get you in the spirit – while our shop will also be stocked with special gift ideas.

Don’t forget you can now connect with us using social media, so that you can stay up to date with all the news, events and projects happening across all our museum sites – and can share your museum experience with your friends.

Hello. Welcome to your What’s On guide. The Silk Mill, Pickford’s House & The Museum & Art Gallery.

Saint Mondays and thereby hangs a tale7 September - 10 November Museum & Art GalleryNew work by Bartholomew Beal for the Jonathan Vickers Fine Art Award

Bartholomew Beal, an emerging star of the arts world, is the current holder of the biennial Jonathan Vickers Fine Art Award. He has translated stories and memories into atmospheric paintings with an ambiguous narrative of their own. His work is intense and ethereal, articulating the balance between the transient nature of people’s lives and the longevity of their story. Beal describes the characters he paints as ‘quiet figures within an under-described space’ and concedes that his pictures develop as much from ‘trial, error and accident as they do from painterly proficiency’. This work is the product of a year spent absorbing the stories and traditions connected with the industrial history of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Beal’s research uncovered many colourful stories such as the ‘Nailers of Belper’ whose jobs were made redundant by industrialisation. They were heavy drinkers and a notoriously unruly bunch who set aside ‘Saint Mondays’ to recover from the weekends’ excesses. – Some of Bartholomew’s work will be available to buy during the exhibition.

Derbyshire Community Foundation established the Jonathan Vickers Fine Art Award in 1998 with the help of a legacy from the estate of the late Jonathan Vickers, a lifelong lover of fine arts. The Jonathan Vickers Fine Art Award, first awarded in 2001, aims to develop a collection of work by rising artists which will be nationally important and will enrich the cultural life of Derbyshire.

The Award brings a rising artist to Derbyshire to produce a body of new work inspired by the county’s landscape, heritage and people.

Portraits by Young People in Derbyshire7 September - 10 NovemberMuseum & Art Gallery

Through the Jonathan Vickers Fine Art Award 2013, young people from Aldercar Community Language College, Anthony Gell Secondary School, Highfields Upper School and Murray Park Secondary School worked with Bartholomew Beal and Derby Museums to create their own portraits. Taking inspiration from this young, contemporary artist and our Joseph Wright collection, young people have produced work in their own, individual style. As part of the Big Draw, draw your own portrait and add it to the exhibition. See their work in the gallery and online at derbymuseums.org

The Silk Mill is in the process of reinventing itself for the 21st century - through reviving the principles of the Enlightenment and expanding traditional perspectives of what a museum is and can be. The concept has been developed from a desire to reflect both the 300 year heritage of the building, starting with the Silk Mill as the site of the world’s first factory, through to the modern day city of Derby as a leader in advanced engineering and manufacturing.

As part of this project we are inviting you to take part in an exciting and ground-breaking community rebuilding project to remake The Silk Mill. ‘Remake the Museum’ will allow members of the public to become citizen curators, taking part in organised sessions, helping to design and build new displays, furniture and fittings for the ground floor of the Silk Mill – all from scratch. Participants will learn new skills, meet new people and have a direct input into the future of one of the city’s most well-loved icons.

If you or your club, society or organisation would like to get involved in the Remake the Museum project, you can find out more and sign up to participate at derbymuseums.org/thesilkmill

Please check our website for all forthcoming activities and events as they happen!

This project is supported by Derby City Council, Arts Council England and The Happy Museum Project.

An invitation to consult with Derby Museums: The Joseph Wright Study RoomsSunday 20 October 10-11.30 am

An invitation to anyone who is interested to come along and find out about a new development at Derby Museums. This is an exciting new plan for two rooms at the Museum and Art Gallery to become fresh, interactive spaces where visitors of all ages can explore the Joseph Wright’s work and other items from our collection: we hope there will be something for everyone. We want to welcome students and school children but also families, adult learners, community groups – in fact anyone in the city and beyond.

We would like to invite you to hear more about our plans and offer an opportunity for you to share your thoughts and suggestions about the study rooms.

The consultation session will take place at Derby Museum and Art Gallery on Sunday 20 October 11am-12noon

Painting in Focus:LS Lowry Houses Near a Mill, 1941Museum & Art Gallery16 November – 12 January 2014

His name is synonymous with the mills and people of his native Lancashire, but LS Lowry was no stranger to Derbyshire and he spent his last days in hospital in Glossop. Over the past 12 months, two hugely popular major Lowry exhibitions have showcased his work and from November we will be displaying ‘Houses Near A Mill’ in one of our smaller galleries.

Taken from our own collection – it is the only Lowry that we own – this is a rare chance to intimately explore a piece of work from an iconic artist who our county has the right to claim partly as our own.

Saturday 23 November 10.30am-1pmMuseum & Art GalleryRather than telling their own story, Lowry’s paintings presented the viewer with a simple scene – inviting them to add their own narrative to the picture before them. Writer Alex Davies’s workshop takes this to another level – using Lowry’s ‘Houses Near A Mill’ as a starting point, he’ll help you to develop your own story to flesh out the scene.
