President's Message
The most common topic of conversationin our region is probably the 1974Porsche Parade.
But why is Riesentoter putting on the1974 Parade when just over a year agowe decided not to host the 76 Parade?
Those familiar with our decision to
decline should remember our reasons.
First, the instability of Pocono International Raceway raised fears thatwe would be without a site for our
competitive events. Secondly, accommodations for the number of peopleexpected with the combined Parade andproposed Bicentennial celebrationcould not be located. And most im
portantly, the number of volunteerworkers necessary for a Parade couldnot be drawn from the number of ac
tive Riesentoters.
When Dennis Thovson first approachedme about co-hosting the 74 Parade.,my reaction was negative for theabove mentioned reasons. However, after some further consideration,I realized that we have a good rapport with the NNJ people; Poconowould commit for the days that weneeded; and Pocono Manor could handle
the 300-350 cars we expect. These, along with the enthusiasm of manynew members, were responsible forour reversal of position.
PCA National was very eager for usto put in a joint bid with NNJ toinsure that more east coast peoplewould be able to experience a Parade. In the past. Parades alternated be
tween east and west; however, for thepast few years the western stateshave hosted more than the eastern.
Remember, the last' east coast Paradewas in Boston in 1970.
The Atlantic Region originally wasto host 1974, but something happenedand they lost the bid. Tennessee bidon it, but was refused because nobodyfrom their region had ever attended aParade. Boston then put in a bid, butwithdrew due to intra-regional differences. This left the bid open andRocky Mountain jumped at the opportunity. But several peop.le were upsetby the prospect of five consecutivewestern Parades! This was one ofthe major considerations wHich hasbrought about our cooperative 1974effort with Northern New Jersey.
I strongly feel that we have made awise choice! A Parade is really aunique week filled with many activities and opportunities to meet newpeople. It would be most unfair todeny the many new PCA people theopportunity to experience a Parade. The whole week does more toward
fostering camaraderie among Porsche-pushers than any other thing - andisn't that what PCA is all about?

The June meeting was held at Beck'sin King of Prussia, Meeting attendance should increase if meetings areheld in a more accessible location.
Any comments about the meeting placewould be appreciated. Next month'smeeting will also be at Beck's.
President Bob Russo reported that theJune 17 Brunch and Tour to LongwoodGardens was considered quite successful and we hope to have another tripof this type on October 14, when wehead for Zimmerman's Auto Museum.
The DVSA Championship Sprint whichour region hosted on June 24 wasrained out and will be rescheduled.
Activities Chairman Chuck Walter, reported that the July 29 trip toGiant's Despair Hillclimb has beencancelled. The Annual Riesentoter
Picnic will be held at Camp Hideaway on August 5th, 12 noon.
Vice President Bob Koerbel announced
that Volume 3 of "Up Fixin' der Porsche" is available at $3/copy, as is"Rallye Tips for Beginners" at $2.50.
John Chatley, Riesentoter Parade Coordinator, distributed sign-up sheetsto enable all present to volunteer towork in whichever area of the Parade
they prefer. Ray and Ginny Ebert, who are chairing the Rallye, havesuggested that we hold a rallye ontricycles in the parking lot to teachmembers how to run a checkpoint, etc.
Interregional events to note are theChesapeake Challenge, Aug. 3,4 and 5at Hunt Valley, Maryland and thePorscherama on September 7,8 and 9at Lime Rock, Connecticut. If anyoneis interested, contact Bob Koerbel.
Joe Long moved and Bob Young secondedthat the official name of our regionbe changed from Eastern Pennsylvaniato Riesentoter. The motion carried
unanimously.
Herb Oberson introduced our guestspeaker, Mr. Walt Chernokal, nineteenyear winner of the Associated PressPhoto Contest. Mr. Chernokal displayed several of his award winning shotsand after giving an interesting talk, answered questions about variousphotographic techniques and problems.

Well, here we are almost halfway thruJuly. It has been quite an involvedtime for those active Riesentoters
who have b.een enjoying all that theclub has to offer. Due to a shortageof time (a poor excuse), I have nothad the opportunity to personallythank those people who have helpedor chaired our recent events, suchas Bob Young at Valley Forge; BobRusso, who makes the events possible by lugging the timer and pylonsaround; Wayne Flegler, our TechChairman, as well as Bob Koerbel,Bob Patton and many others too numerous to list. To those I express mysincere appreciation and gratitude.

NEVER BEFORE HAVE SO FEW DONE SO MUCH
FOR SO FEW WHO APPRECIATED IT SO MUCH,
Six months of 1973 are history and sofar this year, Riesentoter has had 19events. Nineteen events covering atremendous spectrum of interests. Wehave had competitive events, socialevents, ladies events, skiing, rallying, wine tasting, brunching, teching, concouring, sprinting and everything.
Those who enjoy participating in ourclub's events, sometimes, perhaps, fail to realize that none of thesehappenings happen without tremendous"beyond the call of duty" effort onthe part of a few super dedicatedpeople in the club.
This is a non-profit organization intheory and in fact - and the onlyreward received by these few who expend so much energy and effort in ourbehalf, is the inner satisfaction ofseeing their fellow Riesentotershaving a good time.
Through the forum of DER GASSER, letme extend, for all the active members
of our club, our sincere thanks tothe few of you who really keep itgoing. Thank you.
And now we start the second half, five months chock full of goodies forall the members. Those of you whohaven't participated in anything yetare urged to jump in and enjoy, andfind out what it's really like tobe a Riesentoter. There are picnicsand sprints, and dinners, and trips, and rallies, and just everything.Twenty more events designed andplanned for your enjoyment.
Let's do something for ourselves.Let's start with the July meetingand let's make it the biggest turnout we've ever had. And then we'llkeep it going with the August picnic, sprint and social trip. The monthsof Septeiriber and October are sure tobe two of the year's best. An outstanding summer and fall season ofstellar events are planned. You newmembers, for gosh sakes, get involved,There was never a better time thanright now, and never a better bunchof people waiting to welcome you,and never a better way to say "thankyou" to the "little giants of Riesentoter" who make it all possible.

It need not be duringthe week, as your help will also berequired on 1 of the 2 weekends.Naturally, however, to thoroughlyenjoy the Parade, you should plan onspending the week with us July 14 toJuly 20, 1974.
Please keep in mind that the participation of our region in this Paradeis more than just a casual one. Wemust take an active participatinginterest. If every one of us wouldgive just a few hours time, we wouldhave no trouble whatsoever in filling the job requirement. Those of you who attended the regularmonthly meeting held June 27th areaware of the plea made by Bob Russoand myself regarding the 1974 Parade.I briefly explained the scope of theParade in general and specifically, the individual work assignments forour region. Our responsibilitiesinclude the following:
Parade RallyeTech InspectionDoor Prizes and P.R.Trophies and Driver's School
It goes without saying that we needa great many workers to carry outour assignment. Rough estimatesindicate approximately 50 to 60 workers for the rallye and approximatelythe same number for the driver'sschool. Tech inspection will be somewhat easier from a worker's standpoint. The amount of workers neededto assist the chairman handling doorprizes will be minimal, but moredifficult from a requirement oftime involved.
At the June meeting, we circulatedsheets for the various events or jobswith the idea in mind that the members could sign up for the event thatmost interested them. I am sorry tosay, but was not really surprised, that not too many names were affixedto the lists when they were returned. There were approximately 85 peopleat the meeting and only 20 names were

The following table is taken from theFederal Register, Vol.38, No. 34 andlists the emission test results ofthe 1973 Porsche models. The threefigures are exhaust emissions (ingrams/mile) of hydrocarbons, carbonmonoxide, and oxides of nitrogen. All cars were injected models, ofcourse, and are listed in a 2750//inertia weight class.
Mode1/engine/ MPG HC CO NOXtrans
911T 2.2/4 16.8 2.3 18 2.2911T 2.2/5 15.8 2.7 7 1.891IT 2.2/auto 13.8 2.7 16 3.0911S 2.2/5 14.3 3.0 18 1.9911T 2.4/4 18.2 2.3 36 2.0911T 2.4/5 18.8 2.4 25 2.2
The fuel economy figures listed aremisleading since they are calculatedby a computer from the emission testresults. In my experience with suchtesting, they are 1-3 mpg lower thanactual on-the-road figures. -
In comparison with figures for otherforeign makes, the Porsche figuresare about average and possibly loweron CO results which means that thefactory is doing a very good job ofcleaning up their high performanceengine. Someone told me just theother day that Porsche is the onlyproduction car capable of 0 to 60in under 7 seconds.
How much longer Porsche will be ableto meet the emission standards is
anybody's guess, but the factory has
12
committed itself to remain as one ofthe best engineering firms in theworld. Next year's solution is 2.7liters to help keep the power upwhile meeting even more stringentemission standards. Beyond that, who knows? Five liters, 60 horsepower, water cooled, 0 to 40 in 30seconds (40 being top speed)? Thefuture of the automobile, while farfrom being over, will never quitebe the same,
(Ed. note: I'll say the figures aremisleading. The table lists the 2.2as being 142.4 cu.in. and the 2.4as 142.8 cu.in. Even without theactual cc figure, the conversionis like 134 and 146 - so all thefigures must be suspect. Ah, youcan trust the EPA - they are usingsuch super accurate data to killour cars. AUTOWEEK just reportedthat a big, front engine, watercooled V8 Porsche has been confirmedfor production. See?)
914 ShifterOwners of pre-73 914s have troublekeeping the shifter working smoothly. It seems that dirt, grit, grime andother unsavory fellows get into thatlittle black plastic cover at therear of the transmission where ourshift rod goes thru a plastic bushing. How to keep it out? Put aspeedo cable boot over the shaft andclamp it to the sleeve that holdsthe bushing. No more dirt or waterand the shifter stays smooth longer.EL PORTAL - Yosemite Region.
914 Clutch cable
4. Remove air cleaner.
5. Loosen clamp at throttle end ofcable.
6. Loosen clamp at base of air cleaner which holds the cable housingfixed, (the hard one to find.)7. Remove cable.
8. Replace in reverse order.
When pushing cable thru firewall,be careful cable does not twist
around clutch cable. This would beevident by a resistance in the gaspedal when the clutch is depressed. Also, a shift adjustment at thethrottle end may be necessary toattain the previous idle rpm.Connecticut Valley CHALLENGE.
Flying road debris can easily bendthe throttle cable housing at thepoint where the cable passes thruthe firewall between the driver andthe engine. A bent housing leadsto chafing and sticking of the cableand eventual breaking. The cable is"easily" replaced as follows:
1. Remove carpeting and floorboardfrom driver's side and tunnel, marking the position of the clutch pedalstop before removing.2. Separate the throttle cable balland socket at gas pedal linkage, thenremove the socket from the threadedend of the throttle cable noting approximate number of threads visiblebefore removing.
3. Pull cable thru firewall underneath the car.
Get with it.

Duryea Hillclimb, June 2-3
The weather was fine with the coursedry and temperatures in the 70s bothdays. The Blue Mountain Region ofSCCA with the Reading Jaycees did anexcellent job of running the hill. The number of entries at Duryea is 40below the usual weekend with only 160allowed to compete. Therefore, someof our drivers were unable to entereven though they are consistent competitors. This situation should nothurt their individual chances orthose of our teams since drivers dropat least 2 hills in computing theirseason point total. Tom Beil washaving some trouble getting his enginetogether, but should be ready by thenext hill. Jay Schneider got hisTouring I Fiat together to take 2nd.Dick Weiss in his CP 911 did a greatjob in fighting off the Lotuses anda Jaguar(I) for a 1st in CP. Daveand A1 Derecola turned in good performances in finishing 3rd and 4threspectively in the 11 car Mod II
class. Ted Klaus made his 1st hillof the season and took 4th in Formula1 - only a half second out of 2nd.
Fastest-time-of-day on Sunday was aCorvette. This is most unusual sinceFTD is usually taken by a Modified IIor Formula II car. This FTD was byKerry Hitt of Harrisburg and was onlya few tenths off the all-time record. One incident, really newsworthy, isabout a corvette driver, Chuck Calliswho missed his second run to attend
graduation at a local school in Reading, then returned to collect a 3rdin BP. I was told he wore his capand gown over his driving suit! Thespectator gallery was large and overall it was a fine event.
Riesentoter finishes:

Porsche Pit StopBob McCullen
The end had to come sooner or later. The streak of five wins for the newCarrera ended in June. Mo Carter in
a 350 c.i. Camaro won both the 500mile IMSA race at Pocono as well asthe fog-shortened TransAm at WatkinsGlen. But the Carreras were rightbehind, placing 2nd, 3rd and 5th atPocono and 2nd and 5th at the Glen.
The IMSA race had two Riesentoterteams running Under 2.5. The MikeTillson/Dieter Oest Racing Teamentered two 91IS and were aided bylocal drivers, Dave 01impi and BillKontes. The second team consistedof Dick Weiss and Hal Keck (of APCobra fame) in Dick's 91IS. TheOest/Tillson Porsches ran flawlessly but the newly paved track whichwas breaking up proved Mike's undoingas he hit the wall. His crew changeda tire, hammered out a bent fenderand by-passed the oil cooler in amatter of minutes, but the engine hadseized from oil starvation. Dieter, meanwhile, continued to close the gapon the big cars, finishing 12th Overall and 5th in class. Dick and Halhad engine problems and retired whena piston disintegrated.
The TransAm race was very competitivewith six drivers swapping the lead 7times. A1 Holbert co-drove with MarkDonohue in their co-developed Carrera.A1 had qualified 8th fastest but theCarrera was moved back to the 7th rowwith Mark driving since he had notqualified. The race strategy was tolet Mark drive the first two-thirds
of the race to try to overcome thepoor grid position and A1 to finishup the race. Mark charged throughthe pack to take the lead on the56th circuit. On the 60th lap, hepitted for fuel and a driver changein a stop directed by Roger Penskethat took only 15 seconds. On the68th lap the rains came and whilerunning 3rd, A1 slid into a guardrail while still running on drytires. He made it back to the pitson 2 blown tires, but when he wentback out another tire blew, (theproblem finally diagnosed as a bentshock strut from the accident). Asthe car pitted again, the fog flagfell and the car was classed 8th,3 laps behind the winning Camaro.
Mike and Dieter entered the two 91ISin their second major race in back-to-back weekends. Their only majorproblem during the first half of therace, centered around the properselection of tires to meet the ever-changing atmospheric conditions. However, on the 31st lap, the 2.2driven by Mike DNFed with a packedup limited slip and the car wasclassified 33rd. Dieter's 2.0, whichhad started last on the grid, movedsteadily up the ladder. The entirerace ended quite unexpectedly whenfog descended on the track so quicklythat drivers could hardly see the redflag that ended the race twenty lapsshort of the scheduled 92. Dieterhad completed 61 laps, giving him a2nd in class behind a Ford Escortand 21st Overall.
