Staying Healthy

Staying well during school term is important for all of us and maintaining good hygiene standards is an important way to reduce the risk of acquiring and spreading respiratory infections. Parents and caregivers are asked to promote good hygiene, including handwashing with soap as handwashing is the single most effective way to reduce the spread of germs that cause respiratory disease.

At school we provide soap and paper towels for all students to use. We have taken extra measures to ensure that soap dispensers are filled regularly in our bathrooms and all classrooms have access to soap. Consistent with the current guidelines, students who are unwell with respiratory illness should remain at home until symptoms resolve. Star 104.5 FM A future highlight of the term is the visit from Star 104.5 FM radio who will be broadcasting from our school on March 27. Detailed information is forthcoming. May you have an enjoyable weekend. Sondra Broadhurst

We will be celebrating Harmony Day on Wednesday, 18th March. The theme of Harmony Day this year is:

‘Picture a World in Harmony’ The students will be participating in an activity, planned by their teacher, that celebrates this theme. Students are asked to wear an item of orange clothing. It could be a T shirt, a pair of socks or a headband. The rest of their clothing will be their school uniform.

LIBRARY NEWS

Due to the devastating events that have occurred in many parts of Australia over the last few years, it was decided that after our KPS library stocktake, any resources that were not being utilised in the library, would be sent to support the rural township of Armidale, that has been affected by the long-standing drought. Over the holidays, Ms Glare organised for ten large boxes to be sent out to Armidale, to a local bookshop, where the community is encouraged to come in, sit, read, take a break and have a chat. Hopefully our resources will help to play a small part in assisting Armidale residents to boost their community spirit.

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA RECAP

Thank you to all the families who supported their child/children for this school initiative. The morning was buzzing and many children were amazed at what they found within the school grounds; students were empowered through being active members during the session and importantly the school community making a difference. I'd also like to acknowledge Melissa H, Alyssa C and Mia De.A. who assisted me in setting up the boxes in the morning. There was an opportunity for staff to evaluate Monday's initiative. One teacher stated: "Undertaking the mini waste audit was an eye opener for some students." There were discussions on the effect of human behaviours and their impact on places such as The Great Barrier Reef. Teachers delivered lessons that linked to our NSW PDHPE and Geography Syllabus. I believe the following quote sums up the importance of raising awareness:

“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

Malcolm X

Let’s hope the children will continue to show respect and responsibility towards ensuring KPS has a clean environment to learn and play in. I'm sure they will. Congratulations goes to 1T and 3H. They were the winners of our mini waste audit. These classes have been awarded a certificate and will share Oscar for the remainder of the term. Furthermore, the PBL committee has been working on strategies to support effective environmental initiatives. The school is looking to implement 'Waste Warrior' PBL tickets soon. These will contribute towards students’ points in their pursuit of attaining their end of term reward. Bringing in a low waste lunchbox, or showing initiative with any 'environmental' aspect within our school environment will warrant PBLs. This will start next week. Our goal is to achieve sustainability . This is a work in progress. We are very lucky to have some existing structures and practices in place. Mrs Dyga works extremely hard with students on her 'secret garden'. Other initiatives include weekly pick-ups in 'Recycling' by efforts of the ‘Student Enviro team’ and students from all classes who place paper into their class bin, to name a few. Teachers are always on the lookout for future grants that can give our school an environmental 'boost'. Thank you to the canteen who also supported our Clean Up Australia event. I'll now leave you with a final message from Margaret Mead: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” We can make a difference KARIONG! Every little bit counts! Ms Glare

KPS Gifted and Talented Register Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Who is a Gifted Student? The whole idea of ‘giftedness’ is that there is a group of children who differ from other children their own age, in terms of their ability to do something. Be prepared! Although a gifted child may be so different that you feel only an adult should be able to come up with such brilliance in a particular subject area, the same child may appear only slightly above average, or basically average in other areas. The table below includes a number of behaviours characteristic of highly able learners. Those in the left hand column indicate a bright child and those in the right column suggests giftedness.

Parking rules are designed to stop vehicles from parking where it would be dangerous or inconvenient for others.

Please consider the residents when parking in streets surrounding your school.

Safety learning program

Traffic and Parking around your School

School Bus lights – buses use signs and orange flashing ‘wigwag’ lights to warn

motorists and pedestrians that they are picking up or setting down school children. The

lights begin to flash when the bus stops and the doors are opened. They keep flashing

for about 30 seconds after the doors close and continue even after the bus moves off.

You must not drive past the bus in the same direction at more than 40 km/h while the

‘wigwag’ lights are flashing as there may be children crossing or about to cross the road.

A School Zone is the area around a school with a speed limit of 40 km/h. Between the

School Zone and End School Zone signs you must obey the school zone speed limit.

The school zone speed limit only applies on gazetted school days and during the times

shown on the sign.

A No Parking Zone means that you must not stop for more than two minutes. You must remain in or within

three metres of the vehicle. No Parking Zones are suitable for dropping off and picking up.

THESE SIGNS MEAN YOU MAY STOP

HERE TO DROP OFF / PICK UP

BUT YOU MUST

stop for up to 2 minutes only

stay within 3 metres of vehicle

Kids look to you to keep them safe - please park legally in school zones

HEAVY FINES and DEMERIT POINTS APPLY

A Bus Zone means that the area is restricted for bus use only. If hours of operation are

shown, the restriction only applies to this time. You may use this area outside of

these times.

A No Stopping Zone means no stopping at any time.

Page 11: Deputy Principal’s Report · highlight was the last section which demonstrated how creative our students are. Some students from 6B thoroughly entertained everyone with their rap

You must not stop your vehicle (that is, bring it to a stop and either stay with the vehicle or leave it parked) in the

following circumstances:

Double parked (that is in the road alongside a car that is parked)

Across a driveway or footpath

On a median strip or traffic island

On footpaths and nature strips

On or within 20 metres before and 10 metres after a children’s crossing or pedestrian crossing

Within an intersection

Within 10 metres of an intersecting road at an intersection without traffic lights unless signposted otherwise

In Bus Stop, Bus Zone, Taxi Stand or Taxi Zone signed areas

At least one metre from any other parked vehicle, close as possible and parallel to the kerb, and facing the

same direction as the traffic lane

Within three metres of any double centre lines

Within 20 metres before and 10 metres after a bus stop

Other times when you must not stop

Adherence to signposting, linemarking and road rules

around your school will assist in providing a safe

environment for the school community and residents.
