Depressed Midwest is a project that aims to draw focus towards the skate-boarding community and culture in central time, and hopefully inspire others to go skate and create things themselves.
Last year when I started this project, I knew that I wanted to create an outlet where I could share my photographs with others and continue shooting with a sense of purpose. I did not have a clear idea of exactly what I had planned to do, nor do I after 4 issues, but I knew that I wanted to continue a project that would be open for shar-ing not only my own work, but that of other photographers, skateboarders, and the many other creative people that skateboarding embodies.
Issue 5 of Depressed Midwest is a step closer to my goal. This issue contains photographs by some of my favorite photographers from the Midwest.
I would like to thank Kyle Seidler, Marfa Capodanno, Jake Wickersham, Lucas Madel, and Matt Gamalinda for their contributions to this issue; I would not have been able to put this together without your hardwork.

Matt recently started a new website
and zine, Deep Dish Chi, which he
founded with Mark Dunning. Slice 001
contains Black and White photographs
of Chicago skateboarding. Here, Matt
shoots Corey trying a Switch Flip into
the dusty abyss of Lower Wacker Dr.

All City Showdown is a skateboarding competition that pins groups of skate-boarders against each other in an epic 8 hours of skating, filming, falling, pick-ing each other back up, running from security guards, racing to spots, and attempts to produce the best docu-mentation of skateboarding possbile. Each team is composed of 3 skate-boarders and a filmer. After meeting at Uprise Skateshop off Milwaukee Ave in Chicago during the morning hours, each team is given from 11AM until 7PM to film tricks within the city limits and battle to see who can claim a chunk of the $7000 prize money. This year I had a chance to join AndySisomboune, Alex Villasenor, and film-er, Eric Seemann, on Team Pup and Suds.

I do not remember this guy’s name, but he made this spot look easy to skate as he switch heelflipped from bump to bump in Fulton market. The media corner observes.

On this trip, I came to the realization that Steve has been skateboarding for nearly as long as I’ve been alive. And he can still skate handrails. Boardslide.
