WORDS FROM ZIDEK“The staff and I have been so impressed with how engaged and hard this team has been practicing the past two weeks,” said head coach Marie Zidek. “There is no win or loss that can slow down their confidence or ability to improve and they have really embraced that as our reality.

“The end of October for most teams sees practice efforts and attitudes drop off. That is not this team. They may have absorbed a tough blow by Marquette last week, and we know we have to claw our way to our next victory, but they have continued to come back to practices playing with joy and ready to work hard as ever.

“We have turned a major corner where they really are loving the process of getting better and working together as a tight unit. This Providence- Creighton weekend is an excellent opportunity to show that off as we are still on the hunt for the next W and the team has done a great job sprinting this marathon of a season one match at a time.”

Not long after the commencement of 2018 BIG EAST play, the Blue Demons traveled to Rhode Island and took the first two sets against Providence in what would turn into a five set battle where DePaul fell 2-3 (28-26, 26-24, 15-25, 19-25, 10-15). The contest marked the second- consecutive BIG EAST match where Isabelle Banez topped both teams in digs, with 30 and the second highest being 21 from a Providence unit.

L, 0-3SCOUTING THE FRIARSProvidence was picked to finish ninth in the BIG EAST Pre-season Coaches’ Poll and currently sits last in conference rankings with the win against DePaul being their lone BIG EAST win this season. Last weekend, the Friars fell in four sets to Xavier, dropping 1-3 (23-25, 22-25, 25-17, 23-25).

Last season, the Friars finished with a record of 17-16 (6-12 BIG EAST) with conference wins over Villanova, Georgetown (2), DePaul (2) and Xavier.

MARIE ZIDEK HEAD COACH DePaul athletics director Jean Lenti Ponsetto announced on Dec. 22 that Marie Zidek has been named head coach of the Blue Demon volleyball pro-gram. Zidek was an assistant coach at the University of San Diego for the last four seasons where she helped the program to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.

Zidek returns to DePaul where she was an assistant coach from 2010-12. Following that stint with the Blue Demons, she was on the staff at Buffalo for one season before moving to San Diego in 2014.

The Toreros qualified for the NCAA Tournament in each of the last four seasons and were ranked as high as fifth in the nation during the 2016 campaign. As an assistant coach, Zidek tutored two West Coast Conference Players of the Year, six All-WCC team members and two All-WCC freshmen team honorees. San Diego won the West Coast Conference title this past season and senior setter Kristen Gengenbacher was named a third team All-American by the AVCA.

Zidek was named a 30 Under 30 Award winner by the AVCA and has served as a conference represen-tative and publications director for assistant coaches in each of her previous stops in the BIG EAST, Mid-American Conference and West Coast Conference.

She graduated from Northern Illinois in 2006 with a Kinesiology degree and completed a master’s degree in Exercise and Sports Science at Oregon State in 2010. Zidek is also a certified strength and conditioning coach by the NSCA.

MAGGIE STRUS ASSISTANT COACH As an assistant coach last season, Strus helped lead Marist High School to an IHSA state volleyball cham-pionship and the RedHawks were named national champions by FloVolleyball. With the Blue Demons, she will handle the areas of ball control and defense specialties, along with developing players’ mental game, developing connectivity culture, regional recruitment, and DePaul volleyball alumni initiatives that connect the current team with volleyball alumni. Strus was a standout volleyball player at UIC that finished her career as the program all-time leader in digs. She returned to UIC as a special events coordinator and then as spe-cial assistant to the UIC men’s basketball head coach. Most recently, Strus served as a behavior therapist at Autism Home Support and assistant director and recruiting director at Volley Chicago. She grew up around DePaul athletics as her mother, Debra, played basketball and volleyball at DePaul and was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000. Her brother, Max, is also a junior guard on the men’s basketball team.

NICK VOGELASSISTANT COACH Vogel, who most recently served as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of San Diego with Zidek, will work with blocking systems, recruiting, camp experience and adding an edge to the mental side of the game. He brings a wealth of talent and experience to the program as a player and a coach not only in the United States, but around the world. He was a four-year starter at UCLA and was a member of the United States’ national team competing in the 2014 FIVB World Championship and 2011 Pan American Games. Following his collegiate career, Vogel played professionally in Asia, South America, and throughout Europe while also coaching. Most recently, he served as a volunteer assistant volleyball coach with the Women’s program at UCLA and first assistant at UCSD Men’s before joining Zidek last season with the women’s program at Uni-versity of San Diego.
