Services under One Roof

The primary benefit of this new urological clinic and procedure space will be to enhance the positive aspects of the patient experience. According to Christopher J. Kane, MD, chair of the department, the expansion will accommodate the Department of Urology’s great growth, which includes the addition of two new faculty members, while simultaneously allowing it to consolidate services under one roof. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity

to consolidate our urology practice,” stated Dr. Kane. “The OPP will provide us with our own space on the La Jolla medical campus independent of Moores Cancer Center, where a number of our urological oncology faculty are currently located.”

Colocating the differing services in one space allows for close collaboration among urologists, who have been spread across the Moores Cancer Center and Chancellor Park clinics. Patients benefit when physicians can easily and quickly confer.

The Urology clinic space features fifteen exam rooms and four procedure suites in an integrated setting, all located on the first floor. The four urological services that will be provided to patients are urological cancer, reconstruction, men’s health and fertility, and urinary stone disease. Because medical imaging services will also be available within the OPP, all outpatient urological care will be offered in one convenient location, from initial clinic visit to diagnostic radiology to outpatient surgery, then post-surgical follow-up visits and, if needed, physical therapy. This integration of diagnostics, surgery, and physical therapy creates a unified experience for patients that will promote healing.

In addition to Urology, the new Outpatient Pavilion will house musculoskeletal care, breast care, and pain and infusion clinics. The building will integrate ambulatory surgery with diagnostics and physical therapy, outpatient imaging, physical and occupational therapy, and rehabilitation.

The Department of Urology’s Roger Sur, MD, directed a course in laser surgery, “Latest Innovations in Kidney Stone and BPH Surgery,” in conjunction with faculty from

Naval Medical Center San Diego and Genesis HealthCare. There were twenty-one participants, including three UC San Diego Urology residents. Convened at the Medical Education and Telemedicine Building on the UC San Diego School of Medicine campus, the course focused on laser lithotripsy techniques, laser prostate vaporization, and laser prostate enucleation.

A mixture of didactic and practical training, the course included hands-on, proctored surgical simulation. Course faculty member James L’Esperance, MD, of Naval Medical Center San Diego, gave a lecture, “The Foundation: Physics, Tissue Interaction, Safety and Patient Selection.” Dr. Sur lectured on “Holmium Laser Lithotripsy for Kidney Stones.” Mark Leo, MD, visiting faculty from Urology Specialists of Nevada,

gave a talk, “Holmium Laser Vaporization of the Prostate.” The agenda also included an in-depth discussion led by Vaughan Daniels, EMEA Holmium clinical manager at Lumenis.

This laboratory course was an important event for the Department of Urology. According to Dr. Sur, “Directing a course where local institutions can leverage their key opinion leaders helps advance both teaching urologists and cooperating in the educational mission of UC San Diego.”

The UC San Diego Health Andrology Laboratory, a new service under the direction of T. Mike Hsieh, MD, will be a one-of-a-kind lab serving an unmet need in San Diego County. The lab will be

capable of performing advanced sperm testing to evaluate male fertility (semen analysis, sperm morphology, and sperm DNA

fragmentation testing). It will also process semen and testicular tissue to enable assisted reproductive technology (intrauterine insemination and in vitro fertilization). In addition, the lab will house a sperm bank destined to play an important role in fertility preservation for San Diego cancer survivors. Last, the lab will support research efforts. Dr. Hsieh currently collaborates on a germ cell maturation project with researchers in a stem cell lab at the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine. This research is supported by a grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine.

Message from the Chair

It’s my pleasure to welcome you to the ninth Urology program newsletter in my tenure as leader of Urology. I’m happy to announce that the UC San Diego chancellor approved our transition to

an academic Department of Urology in the UC San Diego School of Medicine as of April 1, 2017. You may recall that we became a clinical Department of Urology in March 2013. Our transition to an academic department separates our research and educational programs from the Department of Surgery and gives us, for the first time, the status of a completely independent entity within the School of Medicine.

I want to thank Chancellor Khosla, Vice Chancellor Brenner, and chair of the Department of Surgery Bryan Clary for their support in our transition to full academic department status. This change will help us represent Urology’s needs at the institutional level; help us in our recruitment of faculty, trainees, and staff; and help UC San Diego Health. A robust and highly distinguished Department of Urology brings credit to the university.

This really marks an incredible year for us. The Jacobs Medical Center, a spectacular facility, just opened in November 2016, featuring the most modern technology and amenities, all designed for patient comfort and safety.

Urology faculty and trainees are thrilled to be in the new space, enjoying our large and well-equipped operating rooms with improved scheduling.

As you will learn in this newsletter, we are also planning for the opening of the new Outpatient Pavilion, slated for November 2017. Urology will have a significant presence there, consolidating our services in a single location on the Health Sciences campus. Services will encompass urologic cancer, stones, reconstruction, and men’s health, all located a convenient distance from Moores Cancer Center and Jacobs Medical Center, hubs of our clinical activity. Our new outpatient operating rooms in the Outpatient Pavilion will also facilitate our continued growth and patient service.

I also want to highlight some of our significant research this year and to particularly congratulate Kelly Parsons on the PROSTVAC® trial, an immune therapy intervention for men with prostate cancer on active surveillance. Kelly is the national principle investigator, and we are the lead accruer to that study. Please note the significant grants, clinical trials, and publications in the academic summary. I am so proud of our faculty and trainees for their productivity and contributions.

It’s wonderful to celebrate our newly expanded residency and fellowship programs, run by Jill Buckley and our fellowship directors. We continue to compete for and train the best and the brightest.

In addition, we had a successful faculty recruitment year, and we are very pleased to welcome Yahir Santiago-Lastra, MD, who joins us as an assistant professor. She comes to us from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where she was a clinical instructor in surgery. She specializes in pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery in women and men. Dr. Santiago-Lastra treats patients in our Hillcrest Urology Clinic.

Finally, I want to thank our donors, philanthropists, and partners who have invested in our science and in our people. The return on that investment in the form of scientific progress will continue to be evident.

If you are an alumnus of our program, please feel free to contact me so that we can include you in our announcements for postgraduate courses, Grand Rounds, and social gatherings in San Diego and at our national meeting.

With best regards,

Christopher J. Kane, MD Professor and Chair of Urology Joseph D. Schmidt, MD Presidential Chair in Urology

Christopher J. Kane, MD

J. Kellogg Parsons, MD, is the site principal investigator on the PROSTVAC clinical trial, “Phase II Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Trial of PROSTVAC (PSA-TRICOM) in Patients With Clinically Localized Prostate Cancer Undergoing Active Surveillance.” Funded by the National Cancer Institute, this trial seeks to determine the efficacy of a prostate cancer vaccine (PSA-TRICOM, or PROSTVAC) in

the prevention of disease progression in prostate cancer patients who are undergoing active surveillance.

Christina Jamieson, PhD, is the principal investigator of a $450,000 award from the Leo and Anne Albert Charitable Trust. Renewed in 2016 for another three years, the grant, titled “New Patient-derived Models of Bone Metastatic Prostate Cancer,” seeks

to develop new in vivo models for bone metastatic prostate cancer using patient-derived prostate cancer bone metastasis specimens. Dr. Jamieson plans to use these new models to understand the mechanism of prostate cancer interaction with the bone microenvironment in order to identify biomarkers and targets for molecular therapy.

floor-to-ceiling glass. Daylight reaches far into the floor plan, bringing natural light and views of the sky to both staff and patient areas. The need for artificial lighting is decreased, making for greater energy efficiency. Each level will feature large welcome areas and waiting rooms, with full-height glass windows to take advantage of views. A large deck for sports therapy will contribute to care integration. This feature will extend from the building’s south side and overlook the adjacent canyon. A rehabilitation ramp, situated within a garden, will also be available for therapeutic treatments. Perlman Medical Offices and the OPP will share a large entrance plaza, known as the Outpatient Plaza, with planters and seating. Surgical patients will exit the building through a separate discharge area, allowing a discreet and dignified patient experience.

Green Features

Along with features for convenience and comfort, the new building will target a minimum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver rating and will outperform state energy efficiency standards by 20 percent. LEED is a certification program that independently verifies the green features

of many building types, including schools, retail stores, and health care facilities. Implemented to improve environmental and human health, these features include energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, materials selection, sustainable site development, and water savings. The US Green Building Council (USGBC) runs the program, launched in 2000. Since then, the rating system has spread internationally. Seeking LEED certification for the Outpatient Pavilion follows a trend in construction on UC San Diego’s campus, with the goal of increasing environmental sustainability and improving health.

Ready for the Future

The Outpatient Pavilion is part of the notable boom in health-care infrastructure construction at UC San Diego. In addition to the Jacobs Medical Center, this includes the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Building, a campus research hub housing multiple departments with laboratory and administrative space, in addition to parking decks and lots that will greatly expand parking space availability for patients, staff, and faculty. These are boosts to convenience and, more importantly, quality of care. The rapid expansion of medical services gets ahead of the current state and size of the regional patient base and anticipates the inevitable demographic explosion as the baby boomers age, creating the readiness to satisfy the medical needs of an expanding patient population. With the new Outpatient Pavilion, UC San Diego Health and the Department of Urology improve present operational abilities and prepare for the future.
