Department of Sociology Newsletter SUMMER/FALL 2016 As we begin new academic year, we have the opportunity to reflect back on graduation day in May. What a wonderful group of graduates! We are so proud of our award recipients, hon- ors students, and graduates as they move on to the next phase of their lives. Bright futures are ahead. GRADUATION AWARDS RECIPIENTS Congratulations are extended to our three graduates who received depart-ment awards at the Undergraduate Awards Ceremony on May 14th, 2016. Criminal Justice Award Ralph “Rocky” Colavita is this year’s recipient of the Criminal Justice Award for academic excellence. A criminal justice major with a minor in Psychology, Rocky has an outstanding academic record and has been on the Dean’s list all four years. He is a member of Alpha Kappa Delta and the National Society of Collegiate Schol-ars. Rocky plans to stay a Hawk, attending the Haub School of Business in the fall. He aspires to one day become an analyst in either business or law en-forcement. Sociology Award Sarah Ferguson is this year’s recipi-ent of the Sociology Award for aca-demic excellence. Among her many accomplishments, Sarah received the service-learning

award in 2013, the Women of Purpose Award in 2014, and completed her College Honors thesis. Sarah studies abroad in Cape Town, S. Africa and participated in the 2015 Phila. Service Immersion Program as the lead intern. She also participated in the Winter Immersion to El Paso and APEX to Vir-ginia. Sarah will spend a year of service with MercyWorks Volunteer Corps. living and working at Mercy Home of Boys and Girls in Chicago. She is consider-ing a career in social work, law, reentry, or research. Kane Sociology Award Esteban Valencia is this year’s recipi-ent of the Kane Award given for both academic excellence and a commit-ment to social justice. As a student in the Honors Program, Esteban has been on the Dean’s list all four years while completing a double major in Criminal Justice and Psychol-ogy. He has been involved in service outreach with the Glen Mills School and Graterford State Prison. He also served as an Intern in the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office.

After graduation, Esteban will present research at a conference in London. He hopes to attend graduate school and work in the community mental health field. Congratulations to all of our award-ees! Graduate Criminal Justice Award Congratulations to Kenneth Pugh, this year’s award recipient for the Gradu-ate Criminal Justice award. While pursuing his Master’s degree in CJ with a concentration in Intelli-gence and Crime Analysis, Ken worked as an intern for the Penna. Office of the Attorney General in the Bureau of Narcotics Investigations. In his second year, Ken worked as a graduate stu-dent in the Dept. of Sociology assist-ing faculty with various duties and independent research. Over the summer, Ken landed a posi-tion with the FBI as a Technical Assis-tant.

PLS Graduation Awards Congratulations to our two Professional and Liberal Stud-ies evening students who received graduation awards in the Criminal Justice program. Michael J. Barras, is this year’s recipient of the PLS Crim-inal Justice Award Julius Cauley was awarded the Sergeant McDonald Award for academic excellence by a police officer. This award is given each year in honor of Sergeant Patrick McDonald who was a PLS alum killed in the line of duty in 2008.

Alpha Kappa Delta Induction Ceremony

Congratulations to our Sociology and Criminal Justice majors who were inducted into Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honor Society, pictured above with Dr. Kim Logio, (far left), Chair of Soc. Department, at the AKD Induction Dinner/Ceremony on April 28, 2016.

Faculty News Robert Moore, Assistant Professor, has been appointed interim director of the Justice and Ethics in the Law minor for a one-year period effective June 1, 2016. Congratulations to Dr. Christopher Kelly, Assistant Professor, for receiving the Research Award for 2016 at the 9th Annual International Investigative In-terviewing Research Group Confer-ence in London in June 2016. IIIRG is a worldwide network for interviewing professionals.

Alumni Notes

We are happy to receive professional updates from two of our alum. Please read on: Lauren Davies, ‘14, Criminal Justice, is currently working for the Lenape Val-ley Foundation as a Services Specialist. Lauren provides case management services for clients with intellectual disabilities. She creates individual sup-port plans for clients, coordinates services and makes regular visits to clients throughout Bucks and Montgomery Counties. Lauren says that the skills she learned in senior seminar have been invaluable in her current position, particularly in creating support plans for cli-ents. Julia Collins, ‘15, Sociology, had her Summer Scholar research published in the Undergraduate Journal for Service-Learning and Community-Based Research: An Evaluation and Analysis of Issues Confronting Homeless LGBT Youth from the Perspective of Social Service Agency Pro-viders. Cassandra Tomkins, ‘14, is now a Program Coordinator at Uni-versity of Pennsylvania, Fels Institute of Government. Pictured to the right is our extraordinary panel of three Hawk alums who were invited back to discuss how they made the most of their time at SJU and their career paths. Community Service Scholar Award

Congratulations to Rebecca McIntyre, a senior Sociology major, who was selected to receive Winner of the 2016 Pan American Association of Phila-delphia Community Service Award for outstanding excellence in service to the Hispanic/Latino community. Rebecca will receive a scholarship award of $5,000.00 and was a guest at the annual luncheon celebration of Pan American Day on April 14, 2016. Rebecca was also a finalist for the San Damiano Servant Leadership Award. This award recognizes a faith filled college junior or senior who has a demonstrated passion for and dedication to service, social justice, and leadership.
