Our MMus programme covers a wide array of approaches to musicology: from film music to the social history of music, from musical aesthetics to analysing performances. You can either explore an eclectic range of these approaches, or specialise in one area as preparation for PhD study.

Our staff’s expertise covers all historical periods from early music to the present day, and a range of methodologies including cultural history, critical theory, editing, archival work, music analysis, performance studies, and the philosophy of music.

Our course is flexible: you can combine Masters study in musicology with modules in composition, performance, ethnomusicology, or with modules from other departments.

In addition to research-led class teaching by academic staff, you receive individual supervision for your Special Study projects. Our research culture includes seminars, postgraduate days, and a vibrant community of research students.

Our location close to London gives you access to unsurpassed study resources, including Senate House Library and The British Library.

Recent MMus graduates have gone on to funded PhD study in the USA, UK and Europe, and to a wide variety of jobs including editing, publishing, teaching and the media.
