Achieve Goal
The Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology is a dynamic and flexible organization with local focus. It was
established in the year 1976 in School of Sciences at Gujarat University. Department offers the Master’s, M.Phil. and
Ph.D. programmes in the subject of Microbiology and Biotechnology. Major thrust areas of the Department are
systematic bacteriology, industrial and environmental microbial technology. Department is having faculties with
specialization in various areas of Microbiology and they have guided Ph.D. students in various fields such as plant
and soil microbiology, biofortification, biofertilizer, biocontrol mechanisms, bioleaching, diversity of extremophiles,
environmental microbiology and bioremediation. Department is shaping the future of students by building bridges
with industry and connecting the various disciplines, institutions and community.
Highlights and Achievements
Nearly 1800 students have successfully completed their Masters Degrees, 125 M. Phil and 55 students have been
awarded Ph.D. degree. Department is engaged in active research and have completed major research projects funded
by private sector such as British Petroleum (UK) and government funding agencies like UGC, DST, DBT, MoES,
GSBTM, INDO-UK-UKIERI, etc. Microbial strains and Bioprocesses have been developed by faculty and
researchers like some promising strains of ‘Biofertilizers’ which are commercially used by GUJCOMASOL. Unique
eco-friendly metal bioleaching consortia developed at the department is used by GMDC for efficient metal extraction.
The on-going projects in the department funded by different agencies include GUJCOST, Bio-CARe, MoES, DBT,
UKIERI and DST. Gujarat University was inducted as a part of the National Biotechnology M.Sc. Course in the year
1999. From the year 2005, Gujarat University has also introduced Higher Payment Programme in Biotechnology.
These courses are currently conducted in the premises of Microbiology Department. The main thrust areas of this
biotechnology course are microbial and environmental biotechnology. From the year 2010 the department has started
M.Sc. in Clinical Research and other diploma, certificate courses with collaboration with Shivrath and GSBTM.
Campus interviews are regularly conducted for placement of young microbiologists and biotechnologists of the
department. In the recent past, the companies visited the department are Intas Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Zydus Research
Centre, Claris Life Sciences Ltd., Concorde Pharma, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Private Ltd., Stemcyte and
Amneal Pharmaceuticals India Pvt Ltd. to name a few. Alumni of this department are holding valuable positions in
various universities, industries, Indian army and research laboratories in India and abroad as scientists. In addition to
this, department has also produced entrepreneurs, industrialists etc. contributing to the service of country in many
different areas.
Clinical Research Programme has 100% placements.
Department is shaping the future of students by building bridges with industry and connecting the various disciplines,
institutions and community.
