News from the Math Club – by Nate Hawthorne To all those who missed it, we had a wonderful turnout – more than 30 people - at our viewing of the film, Proof, co-sponsored with the Math Lecture Series. The room was filled with jovial faces stuffed with pizza as the attentive students listened to Professor Karl Zimmermann discuss some of the math ideas subjects that are raised in Proof, before the movie started. Professor Zimmermann wanted to tackle some of the ideas that the movie referenced, and whether they are realistic in real research. He covered some of the misconceptions behind actual research, primarily that most contributions occur when an individual is young, no research is yielded from self-taught mathematicians, and that contributions to the math world cannot come from isolated mathematicians. Professor Zimmermann cited examples where some of the best advancements in math and science came from older individuals, such as Einstein when he wrote the Theory of Relativity, and how Andrew Wiles solved Fermat's Last Theorem working in isolation over a nine-year span. Professor Zimmerman also tackled the misconception that females have not contributed to the math world, citing examples such as Sophie Germain and her discovery of what are now called Germain Primes. After the introduction, we watched the emotion filled movie featuring Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins, and Jake Gyllenhaal. I think most who went will tell you it was an experience worth having. Problem of the Newsletter In addition to sponsoring the movie Proof (above), the math club will be having a Pi Day fundraiser. On Friday, March 14 (3/14, get it? 3.14?) the math club will be selling slices of pie, baked and donated by the math faculty and math club members, in Reamer during common lunch. The money that gets raised will be donated to a math classroom via Donor’s Choose (donorschoose.org), a website where teachers can post requests for donations to support projects in their classroom. Please come support the math club’s effort. Next Math Club Meeting: Monday, March 10 at 1:00pm in Bailey 204 THANK YOU, CALCULUS HELP CENTER TUTORS! Teresa Crasto, Keilah Creedon, Nate Onnen, Alistair Phaup, and Ran Wang. Congratulations to Andie Jia ’17 for solving last week’s problem. A solution has been posted on the bulletin boards around Bailey Hall. Department of Mathematics March 7, 2014
