This letter is intended to update you on developments in the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh’s Department of Geology since the last alumni newsletter in 2014. Many changes have occurred, but the high quality of our program is a constant.

New to our staff is James Amato, instrumentation specialist. He replaces Tom Suszek, who retired last September. Tom is still in town and frequently can be seen helping James with projects. Among many responsibilities, James will help Dr. Tim Paulsen teach summer field camp. He has already made great strides in improving the department’s web presence and social media profile. For example, he has live-streamed each of this semester’s guest speakers in the Distinguished Speaker Series. You can find us on Facebook at facebook.com/UWOgeology/.

Sadly, we lost Dr. Laudon just over a year ago. He was the creator and prime mover behind our Yukon summer field camp in which many of you participated. We occasionally see our other emeritus professors Drs. Norris Jones, Gene LaBerge, James McKee and Brian McKnight, as well as our emeritus custodian, Jerry Staerkel, and they are doing well.

Geology faculty members are widely recognized for their research, teaching and service. Dr. Joe Peterson, our paleontologist, achieved tenure and promotion to the rank of associate professor last year. Dr. Ben Hallett, our metamorphic petrologist, is well on his way toward achieving tenure.

The John McNaughton Rosebush Professorship is the highest recognition awarded by UW Oshkosh for excellence in teaching, professional achievement and public service. Dr. Tim Paulsen received the Professorship in 2014, and Dr. Eric Hiatt received it in 2015. Endowed Professorships recognize faculty members for excellence in scholarship.

In 2017, Dr. Maureen Muldoon was awarded the Edward Penson Endowed Professorship. I received the Regents Teaching Excellence Award, the greatest recognition granted by the UW System, in 2016.

Our students have been no less productive than the faculty. They pursue collaborative research projects with faculty members and present their finding at conferences. UW Oshkosh stages the Celebration of Scholarship every April, and many geology students present their research there. Nearly every year, geology students receive a best paper award. Our students also present posters and oral papers at professional conferences, such as the Geological Society of America national and regional meetings. They do an awesome job and make us proud.

Alumni make us proud, too. We thank those of you who have generously given contributions to the department or its endowed funds. We also thank those of you who have donated your expertise as speakers for our Distinguished Speaker Series. Thanks also to those of you who have hired or offered to hire our graduates.

Dick Guenther (class of 1979) was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award during Homecoming last fall. He has had a very successful career as a full-time researcher at North Carolina State University. Congratulations Dick! And thanks to Dick for making the trip to Oshkosh to receive the award and speak to the Geology Club about his career path. He’s had an interesting life, as I am sure, all of you have as well.

I hope you will enjoy this issue of the Geology Alumni Newsletter. And please keep in touch.

Sincerely,

Bill ModeProfessor and Chair

James AmatoJames Amato joined the UW Oshkosh Department of Geology as the instrumentation specialist in 2017. He is involved in procuring and cataloguing rock and mineral specimens; and maintaining field equipment, rock preparation equipment and laboratory instruments; creating new hall display and maintaining EPA compliance throughout Harrington Hall. In addition, he trains and supervises students as tutors, proctors and outreach presenters and in the use of instruments and laboratories. He also co-instructs the UWO Geology Field Camp.

Amato is a native of Wisconsin. He received a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University Wisconsin-Milwaukee with an emphasis in sedimentology, glacial geomorphology and geophysics. His research has spanned across Quaternary glaciation in Iceland and Wisconsin, to Late Paleozoic glaciation in Brazil. He is proficient in field geology and the application of geographic information systems (GIS).

Christie M. DemosthenousThis is Christie Demosthenous’ 19th year with the UW Oshkosh Department of Geology. Her teaching responsibilities currently include labs and lecture for both environmental geology and physical geology. She received a bachelor’s degree in geology from Colgate University and a master’s in geology from

the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she specialized in clay mineralogy. Her research at Illinois focused on determining the alteration history of volcanic rocks from the island of Ischia in Italy. Demosthenous served as a teaching assistant for a variety of geology classes while at the University of Illinois and Colgate University. Prior to coming to UW Oshkosh, she worked at the Byrd Polar Research Center at The Ohio State University, using radar imagery to study the structural architecture of the Transantarctic Mountains and the distribution of volcanic cones in Antarctica.

Eric E. HiattEric Hiatt specializes in understanding connections between oceans, life and the Earth through time. He studies modern and ancient oceans, environments, and how the Earth and the biosphere have co-evolved. This co-evolution has transformed the Earth from a hostile planet that we would not recognize (90 percent of Earth history) to the one we see today. Hiatt teaches sedimentology and environments, oceanography, sedimentary petrology and physical geology, petroleum geology and carbonate (coral reefs, etc.) systems. He teaches field courses in Bermuda and the Florida Keys that involve the study of modern coral reefs,

environments, oceanography, human environmental impacts, biology, chemistry, the Pleistocene record of climate change and limestone formation. Many UW-Oshkosh undergraduate students have collaborated with Hiatt in his research and fieldwork, including studies of early life, oceanography of Earth's early oceans, analysis of ancient sedimentary basins in the western U.S., northern Canada, South America, Antarctica, Australia, and lead contamination in Wisconsin lakes. He is currently collaborating on research with UW Oshkosh students and colleagues in Brazil, Canada, and New Zealand. He recently completed a Fulbright Fellowship and lived for four months in Brazil, was a visiting professor at Canterbury University, New Zealand, and a visiting professor at Acadia University, Canada.

Hiatt earned his undergraduate geology degree from Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, received his doctorate from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and worked as a scientist at the USGS in Denver (isotope geochemist) and Texaco Exploration Division in Houston (petroleum geologist). He completed a post-doctoral research fellowship (several global-scale basin analysis projects)

at Queen’s University in Canada. He was appointed to the geology faculty at Queen’s University where he taught sedimentology and stratigraphy, petroleum geology, carbonate geology, petrology and a Bermuda field course before coming to UW Oshkosh. He is on the faculty at Queen’s and Acadia Universities in Canada, where he co-supervises graduate students and post- doctoral researchers.

William N. ModeWilliam Mode’s research on glacial geology, palynology and climatic change has taken him to Alaska, Baffin Island, the Colorado Rocky Mountains and Russia. Mode also is interested in the glacial geology of Wisconsin, as he is a native.Currently, he is collaborating with geologists at the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey on mapping Waushara County.

Mode admits that research on surficial geology actually is easier to do in arctic areas than in Wisconsin, because the trees don’t get in the way in the Arctic. While he is department chair, geomorphology, glacial geology and Honors geology are his teaching

responsibilities. Mode’s doctorate is from the University of Colorado, and he spent one year at the Ohio State University as a post-doctoral fellow before joining UW Oshkosh.

Maureen A. MuldoonMaureen Muldoon teaches the hydrogeology courses (physical and chemical), as well as environmental geology. She also teaches a geology field trip to the Colorado Plateau and an environmental studies field course in Belize.

Muldoon's research focuses on applied groundwater questions throughout Wisconsin and all of her projects at UW Oshkosh have involved undergraduate research assistants. Her research interests include investigation of groundwater quality and flow in carbonate rocks, the relationship between carbonate stratigraphy and hydraulic properties, land-use impacts on groundwater quality and the delineation of wellhead protection zones in fractured rock.

Muldoon is a licensed professional geologist and hydrologist in Wisconsin. She occasionally consults on projects that address the hydrogeology of fractured carbonate aquifers. Before joining the faculty at UW Oshkosh, she worked as a hydrogeologist with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey for almost 11 years, where she conducted groundwater research throughout Wisconsin, worked with several counties on inventories of their groundwater resources and taught several short courses.Muldoon received a bachelor’s degree from Washington University in St. Louis and a master’s degree and doctorate from UW-Madison. Timothy S. PaulsenTimothy Paulsen teaches applied field methods, field geology (i.e., field camp in Park City, Utah), geophysics and geotectonics, introduction to field methods, and structural geology and tectonics. He is a structural geologist and his research focuses on

Award in 1996 and the Life Member Award in 2006, both from the National Ground Water Association. In 1998, the Wisconsin Ground Water Association awarded him their Distinguished Professional Award.

Norris W. JonesAfter 32 years of teaching optical mineralogy, petrology, physical geology, X-ray mineralogy and sundry other courses, emeritus professor Jones retired at the end of the spring semester 2000. His golf game reportedly has improved ever since. The seventh edition of Jones’s popular Laboratory Manual for Physical Geology, co-authored by his son, Charles (University of Pittsburgh), was published by McGraw-Hill in early 2009. The lab manual is still used in our geology labs.

Gene L. LaBergeGene LaBerge and his wife Sally moved to the Houston, Texas area in early 2018. After several years of work, La Berge and George Robinson, curator of the Seaman Mineral Museum at Michigan Technological University, have completed a book, Minerals in the Iron Ores of the Lake Superior Region. The book is approximately 80 pages long with more than 100 color photographs of minerals, maps and diagrams. It was published by the Seaman Museum Society fall 2013.

LaBerge and Joanne Kluessendorf, late director of the Weis Earth Science Museum at the Fox Valley campus in Menasha, also have completed a 25-page booklet entitled, A Story Written in Stone; The Geologic history of Central Wisconsin. The project is for students and other visitors to the geological exhibit at the Mead Wildlife Refuge in central Wisconsin. The exhibit is a ring of boulders of the various rock types on which the geologic history is based.

There was one major change in LaBerge’s life in 2013. After 40 years of collecting minerals from around the world, he sold his collection last summer–it was a tough decision to make. However, before the sale, he

had his three daughters each select about 80 to 90 specimens that they liked best. He found that they all had a “good eye” for the better minerals.

Thomas S. LaudonT.S. Laudon passed away January 1, 2017. He had officially retired in fall 1997. During his 34 years in the department, he led the Yukon Field Camp for 32 years. He taught environmental geology, geologic field methods, geophysics, glacial geology, historical geology, paleontology, physical geology, physiography, sedimentology and stratigraphy, and organized and led spring break field trips to the Alabama Gulf Coast, the Florida Keys, Kentucky, the Llano and Oklahoma.

Following retirement, he taught field camp for two more summers, organized and led three geological treks in the Himalayas through the Continuing Education Program, and served as geological guru on six cruise ship voyages to Antarctica.

His recent projects included revisiting Tagish Lake and the Brooks family as often as possible, and sorting through the many geologic treasures he and his father accumulated over the years and deciding how they can be used best to benefit others. He also helped with the University of Missouri Rolla field camp in South Africa in 2004, wrote some papers related to his Antarctic research and visited children and grandchildren, all of whom live in the West: Kathy in Fort Collins, Colorado, Julie in San Diego, California, Leslie in Sacramento, California, Carrie in Houston, Texas, and Joe in Bozeman, Montana.

James W. McKeeJames McKee, who retired in 1996, continues his geological research in Mexico, while pursuing his new career as a farmer. Before he retired, he taught paleontology and stratigraphy, led several spring field trips to Mexico and taught field camp with Laudon for many years. When not doing research, he wrestles steers, grows beans and sells erratics.

Brian K. McKnightBrian McKnight retired in 1999 from teaching Honors geology, oceanography, sedimentology and structural geology. He also operates a wine shop in Oshkosh, where he can be found Thursdays through Saturdays. His field trips involve visiting vineyards and wineries in places like Australia, France, Germany and New Zealand. He soon will be phasing out of the wine business. McKnight also is writing stories that are published in his hometown newspaper of Gays Mills. They are mostly about growing up in a "Huckleberry Finn" existence in the Kickapoo River Valley, but in the future will include articles about the local geology of southwestern Wisconsin.

Tom J. SuszekTom Suszek joined the UW Oshkosh geology department as the associate instrumentation specialist in 2000. He was involved in procuring and cataloguing rock and mineral specimens, maintenance of all field equipment, rock preparation equipment and laboratory instruments, creating new hall displays and establishing EPA compliance throughout Harrington Hall.

In addition, Suszek trained and supervised students as tutors, proctors and outreach presenters, and in the use of instruments and laboratories. He also was a part of the permanent summer Field Camp faculty.

Suszek, a native of Wisconsin, is a 1986 UW Oshkosh geology alumnus. He received a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, with an emphasis in sedimentary and economic geology. He has been involved in exploration for precious and base metals throughout the upper Great Lakes region for more than 15 years. His area of expertise is recognizing environments of deposition conductive to formation of sediment-hosted stratiform copper deposits, and sedimentary and volcanic rocks associated with intracontinental rifting. Suszek retired September 2017.

understanding mountain building in Antarctica, India and North America.

Prior to joining the geology department faculty in fall 1999, Paulsen did a three-year, post-doctoral study at the Byrd Polar Research Center at The Ohio State University. He received a doctorate from the University of Illinois in 1997, where he studied fold-thrust belt deformation in the Wasatch Range of Utah.

Paulsen currently is working with students on projects focused on understanding the Tertiary structural evolution of Antarctica and the North America Cordillera. Joseph PetersonJoseph Peterson teaches evolution of the Earth, paleontology, and stratigraphy and basin analysis. He also teaches field courses in Utah to explore Mesozoic stratigraphy, vertebrate paleontology and taphonomy.

Peterson's research interests include vertebrate paleontology, specifically focusing on vertebrate taphonomy of Jurassic and Cretaceous dinosaur bonebeds. Other research interests include paleopathologies in Late Cretaceous dinosaurs, such as pachycephalosaurs and tyrannosaurs, distributions of mammoth remains in Wisconsin, and actualistic taphonomy of vertebrate fossilization.

Peterson received a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and a master’s and doctoral degrees from Northern Illinois University.

Jennifer M. WennerJennifer Wenner teaches courses in physical geology, the sustainable Earth, mineralogy, igneous and metamorphic petrology and field courses to the Hawaiian Islands as well as Death Valley and the Sierra Nevada. Her research interests include the geochemical evolution of continental crust and mantle in continental arcs and best teaching practices for increasing college students’ quantitative skills.

Wenner is an igneous petrologist and geochemist by training and her geologic research is focused on the evolution of continental arcs and the mantle beneath them. She has studied ophiolites (and archaeology) in Greece, intermediate rocks from Argentina, and high-silica granites in the Sierra Nevada, California. Her current research project is a wide-ranging, geochemical and volcanological study of a series of mantle-derived basalts found east of the Lassen Volcanic Center in the southernmost Cascades, funded by the National Science Foundation. Since 2006, 19 graduates and three current students of UWO have been involved in this project in a variety of ways–traveling to field and lab sites all over the U.S., and12 presented their work at professional meetings. Many of them procured their own funding throu h GSA, Sigma Xi and UW Oshkosh.

In addition to her geologic interests, Dr. Wenner also pursues her passion for teaching through development of faculty and student resources focused on increased quantitative learning in introductory geoscience

courses. Her work includes the online resources The Math You Need, When You Need It (https://serc.carleton.edu/mathyouneed/index.html) and studies of the effects of remediation and affective domain on introductory students’ academic success. She also is active in the National Association of Geoscience Teachers and has been a councilor for the Council on Undergraduate Research. Wenner holds a bachelor’s in geology from Carleton College (1992) and a doctorate from Boston University (2001)

MS at WSU in environmental science, graduated December 2010.I have been working as a grade control geologist at the Pend Oreille Mine, a Zn-Pb MVT deposit, since 2003. I was laid off for two years in 2009, during the economic crash when the mine closed except for care and maintenance. At that time I went to school to receive a master’s degree, where I was able to work and do my research at the mine. My wife and I live in northeastern Washington. We celebrated our 20th anniversary last year. My dad celebrated his 90th, still plays volleyball.

I “retired” last August to part-time from Robinson Noble Inc., a firm in which I am a 26-percent owner. Part-time was intended to be 20 hours per week but so far has ranged from 30 to 50 hours per week. I am apparently not very good at retirement, but I waited the previous eight years for it to be busy and hated to miss out on our record year.

Annie and I are doing fine. We could not have children but compensated with 28 godchildren. My sister Mary (geology ‘68) lives near us.
