Annual Report for the Extra-Curricular Activities conducted by DECA for the period 2016-17

UDBHAV 2016-The MSRIT Annual cultural festival 30th

31st March and 1

st April 2016

The annual cultural extravaganza of MSRIT, that has come to be known as Udbhav,

continues to grow in size and magnitude, this year it was scheduled to be held between the 30th

of march and 1st of April, 2016.It is no wonder that across the years it has become one of the

biggest and well-known fests in Karnataka with a footfall of approximately 15,000 people and

participants from over 3 colleges across Karnataka.

Udbhav being a melting pot of culture, draws the talent of youth from across the state,

showcasing the colossal talents that lay dormant in them. Spanning over 3 days, this fest not only

provides a platform to its own students but also to various young aspirants across the state. The

events are categorized into intercollege and intracollege to create an atmosphere of maximum

exposure to the students.

Each year, we host 27 intracollege and 30 intercollege events which enable students to

showcase their talents in the fields of art, music, literature, dance and theatre amongst many

others. It incentivizes and encourages them to do so by giving away various prizes and rewards.

To create an atmosphere that is not only conducive to bringing out hidden talents, but also to

create a sense of youthful exuberance, the fest carries various themes, this year’s being “#16,

Circus Street” To bolster our efforts in facilitating the metamorphosis of students from promising

aspirants to future leaders, the MSRIT Management has been thoroughly supportive and has

helped us monumentally in transforming Udbhav into what it is today.

Also various companies have come forth and endowed us financially and some in kind.

This year, our title sponsor, Bengaluru Football Club (BFC) has rejuvenated the culture of

football in India. Yokohama, Bhagirath Constructions and Cognizant, being our associate

partners, have also greatly helped us in bringing this fest to life. TVS, Radio Indigo, CreatHives,

Hello Buddy, Karnataka Bank, Biriyani Night out (BNO), Blue Frog, Axis Bank, Zebronics and

Vijaya Bank have also contributed significantly in making this fest a success.

This fest has created a niche for itself in the hearts of student, and we hope that it

continues to do so along with the ever enduring support from college management.

16th

Annual VTU Youth Festival (7th

-10th

May 2016)

Every year, VTU organizes one of the most widely participated cultural extravaganzas in

Karnataka, at different host colleges affiliated to the university. This year, VTU fest was held in

Moodabidri, at Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology. MSRIT was represented at the

fest by a selected contingent of 38 talented students, under the guidance of Dr. K.R. Phaneesh

and Mr. Sanjay H.S. of the Department of Extra-Curricular Activities. With the encouragement

from the college administration and faculty, the contingent was able to participate in the fest

without any major hassle or letdown.

At the festival, there were five categories of competitive events, namely, Dance, Music, Fine

Arts, Literary and Theater, under which there were several events like “Western Group Music”,

“Indian Group Music”, “One Act Play”, “Skit”, “Mime”, “Elocution”, “Debate”, “Cartooning”,

“Clay Modeling” etc. We participated in 23 events out of 25 events, making our contingent one

of the most diverse contingent at the fest.

We began our winning streak on day one itself, and it became evident by day two; as we were

positioned favorably in top three in events like Skit, Western Vocal Solo, Clay Modeling etc.

With enough points in our bag we were already near the top spot and we solidified our lead with

spectacular performances on day three, especially in Western Group Music, One Act Play and

Mime. On day four our rousing performance in Indian Group Music, Folk Orchestra etc. brought

us laurels and appreciation from everyone. Finally, at the end of the fest which lasted four days,

saw participation from over two hundred colleges, our cumulative score which has incidentally

also been our highest ever, placed us second amongst all participating institutions -as we lost the

top spot to the host college by a nick. Additionally, we won the overall category award in

Theater and Music, making MSRIT the only contingent to do so, at the festival.

It is worth noting that the MSRIT contingent put up some of the most iconic performances at the

fest. Our One Act Play “Manjha” was one of the most critically acclaimed play and received

standing ovation during the event. Additionally, our performances by Indian Group Music and

Western Group Music teams, which also won in their respective categories, were some of the

most well-received performances as made evident by resounding rounds of applause our teams

received. While none of this would have been possible without the collective commitment shown

by the contingent, it is important to thank two people- Dr. K.R. Phaneesh and Mr. Sanjay H.S. -

our faculty coordinators who showed exemplary dedication towards the cause of winning this

festival. The encouragement and support that we received from them has been a vital factor in

catalyzing the success of the MSRIT contingent at the fest.

We are grateful to the college administration, our Principal, members of staff and faculty and

especially, the Department of Extra Curricular Activities for their unwavering support to the

team. Organizing logistics, constituting a team and finishing relevant paperwork at record pace,

would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of the team managers, team captain

and the college support system and, we hope we have done justice to the expectations of the

college from us. We also hope that the endeavor to support extra-curricular activities in the

campus receives continued patronage, so that the student body can continuously make MSRIT

proud at prestigious events, like the VTU Youth Festival.

edition saw participation from all around the globe with participants from University of Malaya

in Malaysia, University of the Philippines Diliman, International Islamic University Malaysia,

Cornell University, Yale University and the National University of Singapore. The preparation

for the tournament began in June. For the coming months the Organizing Committee planned

every aspect of the tournament and worked to give shape to our ideas and with the support and

guidance from DECA, we successfully mobilized resources to host one of the most successful

events in the college.

MSRMPD 2016 was organized on 20th, 21st and 22nd August. The tournament played

host to some of the best debating minds in the nation and after five preliminary rounds, sixteen

teams made it to the knockout rounds. At the end of grueling Quarter Finals, Semi Finals and

Finals, Souradip Sen. and Jaya Jain's team from IIT-Bombay emerged victorious. The other three

finalist teams were from International Islamic University Malaysia, NLS Bangalore and RV

College of Engineering. Some of the country’s best debaters were part of the adjudication pool

for the tournament and the chief adjudicators for the tournament were Viraj Parikh from NLS

Bangalore, Achitha Jacob from IIT-Bombay, Leomar Doctolero from University of the

Philippines Diliman, Chan Sriram from NALSAR Hyderabad and Ajinkya Deshpande from IIT-

Bombay.

The Literary and Debating Society and the Organizing Committee, of Dr. M. S. Ramaiah

extra-curricular calendar of our college. We are grateful for the unflinching support we have

received from the college administration and DECA and we hope that we did justice to the

TEDx-MSRIT(September 17, 2016)

Stories of passions pursued, off-beat performances and standing ovations characterised the fifth

edition of TEDx at M S Ramaiah Institute of Technology (MSRIT) on Saturday. Over a hundred

people attended the event for which DH was the print media partner. The talks kicked off with an

energetic performance by fusion band Hamsadhwani. Every speaker had an insight to offer to

the audience. Sinu Joseph, a menstrual hygiene counsellor, showed that rural women have fewer

instances of menstrual problems like dysmenorrhoea and their understanding of the natural

process is far better than that of urban women. Naresh Narasimhan, an architect, discussed the

issue which unites every Bengalurean – traffic. He presented surprising facts that the city has one

vehicle for every two people and that the BMTC buses form only 0.1% of the total traffic on the

road but cater to 50% of all trips made. Public taxis and quadrupling the number of BMTC buses

were the suggestions he made to solve the issue.

Singing again

“I was 34 when I had a heart attack and the doctor told me that I could never sing again. Since

then, I have performed in 111 concerts.” said Harish Sivaramakrishnan, a designer and member

of the Carnatic progressive rock band Agam. He urged everyone in the audience to pursue their

passion seriously and not as a hobby. Dr Vikram Huded, a neurologist, Neil Menon, a physicist

who is popular on Quora, and Madhuvanthi Ananth, an entrepreneur, also spoke.

Besides the talks, there were music, art and dance performances to engage participants. Mahesh

Pattar speed-painted a portrait of Charlie Chaplin and beatboxer Karun Krishna entertained the

crowd by creating music without instruments. A classical dance fusion and a performative poetry

piece by Aayana Dance Company left many in the audience filled with emotions and at a loss for

words.

Supriya Pherwani, a participant and a student of design in Sydney, said, “The thought of

travelling in Bengaluru’s crazy traffic to get here made me a bit reluctant at first. But it has been

totally worth it. Each talk was so enlightening and the performances were amazing too!”
