RESEARCH PROJECTS

Dr Federica Rossi has been awarded a research grant from Birkbeck,

School of Business Economics and Informatics to pursue an exploratory

investigation into ‘The multiple dimensions of knowledge transfer

value’. The project intends to investigate the many ways in which univer-

sity-industry knowledge transfer processes can create value for a range

of stakeholders, with the objective to support the development of more

accurate and comprehensive indicators of universities' knowledge trans-

fer performance.

Prof. Linda Trenberth has been the Principal Investigator for the re-

search project ‘Understanding Stress and Bullying in New Zealand

Workplaces’. The final report contributed to understanding the nature

and prevalence of psychosocial hazards in new Zealand workplaces

and was acknowledged by the Minister of Labour, Hon Kate Wilkinson.

Since its public release, the data in the report has contributed to the

decision to include psychosocial workplace hazards as a priority area

for the Occupational Health Action Plan to 2013, an initiative of New

Zealand’s Workplace Health and Safety Strategy. Data from the report

has also been used as one of the main factual bases for a new guide-

line on workplace bullying in New Zealand, currently being written by

the Ministry. The report has also led to an on-going association be-

tween the authors of the research report, and the analysts within the

Ministry who are writing the Bullying Guidelines, with further contribu-

tions from research authors into the guidelines. The Bullying Guide-

lines will make data from the research report available to Health and

Safety Inspectors, Health and Safety professionals, Unions and em-

ployer groups, as well as presenting practices for preventing and deal-

ing with bullying at work. The research is now being replicated in Asia

through the 10 ASEAN countries.

Prof. Linda Trenberth has been awarded a research grant from Birk-

beck, School of Business Economics and Informatics for the project

‘Work and well– being in ASEAN workplaces’.

International Research Network on Varieties of Liberal-

ism

Having published Banking Systems in the Crisis: The Faces of Lib-

eral Capitalism (2013), the International Research Network on Varie-

ties of Liberalism is progressing the next stage of research, exploring

‘The Alternatives Within’. The aim of this project is to further work on

the 2007/8 financial crisis and post-crisis debates in liberal market

economies (LMEs). Having examined cross-country variation in the first

volume, we propose to extend our analysis to within-country variation.

The focus will be on ‘the alternative within’ – how alternative paths of

economic / financial development and regulation are possible within

each LME, regardless of the actual willingness and capacity of regula-

tors and policy-makers to embrace them.

Future events:

A meeting of the Research Network will be hosted in London in May

(2013)

A session is planned for the SASE Annual Meetings in Milan in June

(2013)

A session is currently being planned for the EAEPE Annual Meetings in

Paris in November (2013).

A book proposal is currently being prepared for a second volume to

Routledge, which has expressed interest in publishing this research.

DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT

RESEARCH CENTRES HIGHLIGHTS

The Centre for Innovation Management Research and Birkbeck’s Enter-

prise Hub are organizing a day workshop on April 19, 2013, on the topic

‘Intellectual property and university entrepreneurship’. The event aims to

bring together entrepreneurs, industry practitioners, academics, policymakers,

and Birkbeck’s own students and alumni who are either entrepreneurs or consid-

ering entrepreneurship as a career path, for a day of debate on the many intel-

lectual property issues that new entrepreneurs are likely to be confronted with.

The Birkbeck Enterprise Hub (http://www.bbk.ac.uk/innovation/entrepreneurial

-innovation/starts-hub) has gone from strength to strength since it was launched

in October 2012. Membership of the Hub has now grown to more than 90, and

adds between 20-40 new members a month.

The monthly Enterprise Hub Workshops have featured talks by Gloria Halim,

CEO of Vashti, a start up focusing on specialized women’s lingerie; and

Marianne Metaxas, founder and CEO of Buddies, a pet insurance company. The

role of the female entrepreneur has been strongly emphasized throughout the

Hub activities.

The weekly Coaching Seminars, on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, typi-

cally involve 4-8 participants. Facilitated by Andrew Atter, the Entrepreneur in

Residence (also a qualified Executive Coach), they are designed to foster peer-

to-peer learning and support student entrepreneurs design and execute their

projects. Currently, approximately 6 students are also receiving individual coach-

ing from Andrew. One of these students, Ken Kangshu, is the first entrant into

the Birkbeck Graduate Entrepreneur Scheme, a programme designed to support

up to 7 recent graduates from outside the EU to set up their enterprises over a 1

-2 year period. The presence of the Hub means that Birkbeck can now offer this

kind of support to a limited number of graduates.

On March 13th, two Birkbeck entrepreneurs made initial presentations to the

representatives of the ChicagoBooth Angel Investor Network. It is hoped that

further collaboration of this nature can be developed in the future.

The CIMR working paper series now has an ISSN number which will increase

its international visibility. The 10 working papers between them have had 391

downloads through RePEc database since the series was registered in 2012.
