The Christmas season, arguably the happiest time of the year, is the season of goodwill, festivities and excitement. As we celebrate the hope, joy and peace of Christmas let us ensure that the real meaning of Christmas is not lost in the festivities but that we will share with the less fortunate among us. Amidst our celebration, let us reflect on those who may not be experiencing the festivities as most of us will. We remember at this time, the men, women and children in our correctional facilities, who are away from family and deprived of freedom. As a department we continue to make Christmas a memorable experience for them. We use this opportunity also, to recognize the contribution of our valuable stakeholders--our part ners and service providers who have been instrumental in helping the department to carry out the mandate of securing and rehabilitating offenders. We recognize and applaud the support of the Ministry of National Security and in particular, Senator, Honourable Pearnel Charles Jnr. Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security. We are grateful to the hard working members of staff of the Department who carry out the essential service of public safety. Many will not be present for their family dinners, as they will be at correctional centres and outstations, carrying out their duties. We appreciate their sacrifice and commitment. We are mindful that amid the celebration, there is a feeling of sadness as we reflect on those who have lost loved ones during the year. As a department we pause to remember Correctional Officer Romar Bent who died tragically. We remember other members of the Correctional staff who died from natural causes. We acknowledge the family of Correctional Officer Valda Lee Taylor-Dyer who are making funeral plans because she succumbed to injuries received in an accident. Our prayers remain with all the families. Your loss is our loss too. We cherish the memories of our dearly departed. Because Christmas brings hope, peace, joy and goodwill, it is also an appropriate time to reflect as we look forward to a new year. May this reflection inspire us into self-actualization and claim the hope that 2017 will be a great year. Accept my sincere gratitude and very best wishes for a merry Christmas and God’s guidance for a happy new year. Merry Christmas to you all!

We use this opportunity also, to recognize the contribution of our valuable stakeholders--our partners and service providers who have been instrumental in helping the department to carry out the mandate of securing and rehabilitating offenders.
