Welcome! Thank you for your interest in the Eastern Department of Business Administration’s program offerings. Our programs are designed to provide students with knowledge and skills to meet professional business-related career needs and succeed in a rapidly changing world. The degree options provide students with three core capabilities:
1) Specific functional domain skill sets of their choosing (Accounting, Marketing, BIS, etc.)
2) The ability to integrate knowledge and resources across functional domains for increased organizational effectiveness and operational advantage
3) Provide supporting complementary skill sets that are of high value to individuals and their employers a) between the liberal arts and the sciences and business disciplines or b) among business disciplines (i.e. major in Education and minor in Business Administration or major in Computer Science and minor in Business Information Systems).
Through the development of these three core capabilities Eastern - Department of Business Administration graduates will be able to conceptualize business ideas, strategize for global environments, and utilize business techniques and technologies. This handout is intended to provide a quick reference starting point to help improve your interaction experiences with our department. Please obtain material referenced in this handout for additional detail or contact the appropriate Eastern representative for further assistance. Sections of this handout are:
1) Educational Options – Outlines business majors, minors, and concentrations.
2) Career Opportunities – Contrasts student business work experience alternatives and points to career selection and job search resources.
3) Strategies for Success – Suggests various degree-course plans for a variety of professional objective scenarios that may serve as course of study templates. Plus, a frequently asked questions page is included as well.
4) University Professional Involvement – Lists business student professional clubs and community outreach organizations - involvement in which heighten the Eastern business learning experience and provide opportunities for professional networking.

Department of Business Administration Educational Options - Undergraduate
Eastern Connecticut State University
The Eastern - Department of Business Administration offers a number of degree options and combinations to meet
rapidly changing professional needs. Below are listed the degrees currently offered. The following booklet pages are
summary sheets outlining requirements of the various majors, minors and concentrations.
MAJORS:
Bachelor of Science majors in:
Accounting - Thorough knowledge of financial and managerial accounting, auditing, and taxation so to be
prepared for accounting staff positions in a variety of organizations, CPA certification, or graduate school.
Business Administration - A well-developed understanding of business concepts with additional in-depth
focus available for student selected business area[s] of “Concentration” in Finance, Human Resource
Management, International Business, Management, Marketing, or Operations Management.
Business Information Systems - Understanding of how information systems can be used to improve
organizational effectiveness and how these systems can be managed through fundamentals of information
technology, business, and organizational management.
Finance – Requires knowledge of investments, banking and other depository financial institutions
utilizing accounting and financial knowledge appropriate for the business, legal and economic
environments in which financial decision are made.
Labor Relations & Human Resource Management – Provides interdisciplinary perspectives of work and
employment relationships utilizing theoretical and professional knowledge to prepare students for careers in
labor relations, human resource management, policy analysis and management as well as graduate or law school.
MINORS:
ALL department minors are open to students in all majors of study at Eastern, unless specially noted
for a specific minor. This “openness” facilitates meeting managerial, organizational, and technical
needs of students majoring in the liberal arts and sciences upon entering modern working settings.
Department of Business Administration “minors” can be further contextualized to meet specific career
needs by selecting particular alternative courses and/or elective courses allowed in the minors.
Accounting: Enable job flexibility and understanding of accounting principles in real-world applications.
Business Administration: Practical concepts of real-world business to be better prepared for any career.
Business Information Systems: Provide knowledge of IT resources and their use in organizations and
develop practical IS/IT skills that are beneficial to individuals pursuing a wide variety of professional careers
and academic disciplines.
Healthcare Informatics: Integrates knowledge of business information systems, healthcare informatics,
computer science and public health and provides flexible electives to enable students to pursue a large variety of
jobs in the rapidly growing health information technology area.
Management Information Systems: Extends business and technical skills to include knowledge of practical
business systems (offered jointly with the Department of Computer Science)
Social Informatics: Gain knowledge on utilization, organization and control of information systems in
society, non-profit/non-business organizations, and learn how info technologies and societies shape each other.
CERTIFICATES: Available in a number of business fields. Please speak with a department rep for more info.

Additional Note: Within the 120 credits required for the baccalaureate
degree, 60 credits must be numbered 200 or higher, and at least 30 of
these credits must be at the 300-400 level.
All Students are required to complete university W1, W2, and W3 writing requirements: The W1 requirement is taking either English 100, 100P, 200 or HON 200. The
W2 requirement is taking two Writing Enhanced courses approved for your major (BUS 201/BUS 225) OR a total of taking two W3 approved courses within the Dept of
Business Admin to satisify both the W2 and W3 Writing Requirements. i.e. A student transfers in ACC 301 and ACC 311 which were not Writing Enhanced courses at the
other school, therefore the student takes the major's W3 course (ACC 411) and a second dept W3 course (BUS 301, BIS 377 or BUS 365) to satisfy both W2 and W3.
Note: Transfer students from one or more accredited institutions who enter with 60 or more transfer credits shall be considered to have met the rest of Eastern's Liberal
Arts Program Tier I, including Natural Science with a lab providing that they transfer a minimum of 27 credits in liberal arts disciplines: humanities, social sciences and
natural sciences. All students must satisfy the T1M and T1W requirement. Students transferring in 15 or more credits are waived of the T1-FYE requirement. (this applies

Students majoring in Accounting are required to take ECO 200 to satisfy LAC - T1SS and ECO 201 to satisfy LAC - T2IS. Only those two courses
may double count between LAC Tiers 1 and 2 and the Accounting major.
Students transferring with 30+ credits to ECSU, not having taken an LAC-T1SS course may take ECO 201 concurrently with a LAC-T1SS course
with special permission from the Economics Department.
Students transferring 30+ credits to ECSU, having not taken an LAC-T1M course may take ECO 215 concurrently with an LAC-T1M course with

requirements: The W1 requirement is either English 100, 100P, 200 or HON 200. The
W2 requirement is taking two Writing Enhanced courses approved for your major (BUS
201 and ECO 330) OR a total of taking two W3 (Writing Intensive) approved courses
within any LHR related departments to satisify both the W2 and W3 Writing
Requirements. Example: A student transfers in BUS 201 and ECO 330 which were not
Writing Enhanced courses at the other school, therefore the student takes his/her
major's W3 course (ECO 329) and a second W3 course (ECO 479, BIS 377, or BUS

(BUS) Minor Description: The minor in Business Administration is open to all university students and is designed to provide individuals with both a theoretical and a practical understanding of operating a business. IV. Three Business Elective Courses (9 Credits)
Business elective courses must be selected from one or both of the areas of business taken in the above section III. Any (300) or (400) level business courses from either section may be used to fulfill the elective requirements. Courses should be chosen based on a student’s particular interests. Additionally, selected courses may be entirely within one area of business and focus specifically on finance, human resource management, international business, management, marketing, or operations management. Minor in Business Information Systems
(BIS) Minor Description: The Business Information Systems Management Minor focuses on how information systems are used to improve organizational performance and transform basic business structures appropriately. The minor is designed to develop and enhance skill sets needed for current or future careers across discipline fields and industries. The flexibility in the BIS minor enables students to acquire information systems skills most relevant to their career paths, major programs of study or secondary areas of interest. Upon completion of the minor, a student will be able to analyze, design and manage information systems and associated processes in a wide variety of organizations. This minor provides students with valuable skills and knowledge in the management of information systems resources, which constitute up to a third of the total assets of businesses and organizations today. The BIS minor also allows for flexible combinations that compliment many majors providing great job opportunities. The minor is designed to incorporate a variety of BIS elective courses to select from, that provide the matching complementary information systems and technology skills for several majors (i.e. Accounting, Business Administration, Communication, Computer Science, Digital Art, Economics, and more) and discipline concentrations (i.e. Finance, Management, Marketing and Operations Management).

Minor in Social Informatics
(SI) Minor Description:
The Social Informatics minor deals with utilization, organization and control of information systems in society, in non-profit and non-business organizations. Its focus is on the interdisciplinary study of the design, uses and consequences of information technologies that takes into account their interaction with institutional and cultural context.
Through the elective course within the minor students get an opportunity to deepen their understanding of using information technology in one of three important areas: sociology, social work, environmental management or sustainable energy. Upon completing the minor, a student will be able to use information systems to collect and analyze data needed to enhance the productivity of medium and small organizations, governmental and non-profit agencies.

Minor in Healthcare Informatics
(HIM) Minor Description: Offered by the Business Information Systems programs in cooperation with the Computer Science program, the Business Administration program, and the BGS Public Health Program. Healthcare providers are introducing considerable resources in areas such as electronic medical records (EMR) and clinical systems. There is a potential for growth in employment in healthcare informatics since, as of 2009, only 7% of medical practices maintained EMRs. ECSU is the only institution of higher learning in Connecticut that offers courses in Healthcare Informatics as part of the Business Information Systems and Public Health BHS programs since 2009. The expected growth of jobs in Healthcare Information Technology and the liberal arts mission of the university justify the interdisciplinary minor in Healthcare Informatics. The program integrates courses from several disciplines to serve in emerging needs of the area. The interdisciplinary program will prepare students for several careers described by the American Society of Health Informatics Managers (ASHIM): application support and training, EMR consulting, desktop and network support, clinical analyst, business analyst, transition coordinators, data/information managers, privacy and security experts and health IT managers. The minor also compliments well with skills developed in programs such as Business Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Administration, Biology, Psychology, Health Science, and BGS Public Health.

- Your cumulative GPA must be over 2.7 to qualify to enter your major’s Internship Program. - You must have a minimum of 24 credit hours in the Dept. of Business Administration to receive a
major from the Department (Accounting, Business Admin., or BIS) - At least 30 credits towards your degree must be earned at Eastern, unless you have a specific

Business Major
International Perspectives Requirement
The Eastern Business Major requires that a student possess an exposure to international perspectives. This requirement can be met in any of the follow ways:
1. Take two courses designated as being “International Perspective” courses such as any two of the following:
BUS 329 -- International Marketing BUS 437 -- International Finance BUS 362 -- Global Operations & Logistics BUS 450 – International Business BUS 370 -- Business Perspectives, Canada/US BUS 463 – Seminar Int’l Business
2. Take four years of the same foreign language in high school. (Permission of the department chair must be obtained.)
3. Take two or more years of one foreign language in high school and one year of the same foreign language at the college 200 level or higher of that same foreign language. Thus, one additional higher level college year of a foreign language beyond the basic university requirement is needed to fulfill the international perspectives requirement.
4. If you had three years of one foreign language in high school, you may either: A) take the second semester at the college 200 level or higher of that same foreign language, or B) take a one semester International Business Perspective course used to meet the International Business Perspective and not used towards any concentration with permission of the department chair obtained.
Example: Take 3 years of French in high school and you must therefore take a college 200 level French or higher level course in college. Your third year of high school French would earn you 3 credits but you still would need to take 3 credits of a 200 level second year college second semester or higher college course in French to meet the International Perspectives requirement. (Department chair permission must be obtained.)
5. Earn an international minor such as:
- Canadian Studies - Spanish - Latin American Studies - French

Business Internship Information Summary
Students must fulfill requirements within the Business Major
through completion of an internship program, which provides
opportunities for intensive fieldwork experience.
Business internships are open to business seniors only and
are required to graduate as a Business Major.
Students receive six academic credits for successful
completion of internships, which are non-paid positions.
Internships are offered during the fall and spring semesters
and possibly summer. (16 hours per week for fall or spring
semester for a total of 224 hours and must also complete the
class component--BUS 490/Internship in Business
Administration.
The Process
Submit application by deadline date (applications available
online and in the Dept. of Business Administration Office
Webb Hall 423).
Completed application must include a professional quality
resume (obtain resume assistance at Career Services Office &
from your faculty advisor), an unofficial transcript, and a 250
word description of your career goals and interests.
After submitting application, schedule appointment with
Internship Coordinator (Dept. of Business Administration
Office 860-465-5265) to get contact info for internship sites.
Based on contact choices, student contacts host organization
to arrange interview (must go on three interviews).
Once interviews are completed and internship offer has been
received and accepted, inform Internship Coordinator of your
internship placement.
Complete Business Major Internship registration form for
BUS 490 and leave in Dept. of Business Administration Office
for approved by Internship Coordinator, Dept. Chair, and Dean.

Transfer Students
All students entering Eastern Connecticut State University on or after Fall 2008 for the first time will be enrolled under the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum requirements (LACs). Students entering Eastern prior to Fall 2007 entered under the General Educational Requirements GERs (see Advising Center /advisor for GER specifics). Students transferring to Eastern prior to Fall 2010 with 60 or more credits and whose progress towards graduating at Eastern will be significantly helped by completing the GERs may appeal being placed in the LAC to the Advisement Ctr.
1. For transfer students entering Eastern under the LACs with 60 or more credits, the following LAC requirement exceptions are noted:
A. Students transferring with 30 or more accepted credits will be exempt (waived) from completing LAC T1FYE – First Year Experience.
B. All students transferring to Eastern regardless of the courses transferred must complete at least two LAC Tier 2 courses from different Tier 2 categories and the LAC Tier 3 Capstone Independent Inquiry at ECSU.
2. Waivers/Substitutions of HPE requirement (LAC-T1HW or GER-VB):
A. Students entering Eastern with 60 or more credits or an Associate Degree
B. Students with medical reason approved by Health Services (see Advising Center)
3. Print a “Degree Evaluation Report.” Pay close attention to which courses were transferred in from your other institution and if they count as a specific required course, (e.g. ENG 100) specific elective course, (e.g. BUS 331) or a non-specific elective indicated by a department code (such as “ENG”) and a course level (such as “1xx”, “2xx”, etc.)
4. When no specific Eastern course equivalent was assigned to a transferred course indicated by an Eastern complete course number and “T” for transfer on the Degree Evaluation report, The course may still possibly qualify as an elective for a major or minor and towards the total credits needed to graduate. (Note: Please see your major and/or minor program’s requirements for number of credits and specific courses required to be taken at Eastern.)
5. If you think that a course taken at another institution should be applied to meeting a specific Liberal Arts Core (LAC) instead of as a general elective as indicated by a “1xx” or “2xx” course number on your “Degree Evaluation Report”, you may appeal the initial non-specific transfer classification at the Advisement Center. Bring a copy of your other institution’s transcript and the syllabus for the course in question with you to the Advising Center (Library 109 – 860-465-4526)
6. For transfer courses taken at another institution that you think should be applied to meet a specific Major, Minor, or Concentration course requirement, instead of as an elective which are indicated by a course number such as “1xx” or “2xx” on your “Degree Evaluation Report,” you may appeal the initial non-specific Transfer classification with your department chair or appropriate program chair for the course in question. (Bring a copy of your other institution’s transcript and a copy of the syllabus for the course in question with you for the department chair or appropriate program chair to review.)
7. If students enter Eastern with a Bachelor’s degree, and plan to earn a different Bachelor’s degree, then those students are exempt from all LAC or GER requirements.
8. Bring a copy of your other institution’s transcript with you to meetings with your advisor.
9. Get involved with student organizations and activities associated with your major(s) and minor(s).
10. Students transferring to Eastern with 75 or more credits are waived from some of the Eastern “Writing Program” requirements. Please contact the “Writing Program” faculty and staff at (860) 465-4639 for further information and verification of your individual remaining “Writing Program” requirements.

American Marketing Association (AMA) A major goal of the Eastern Chapter of the AMA is to develop the chapter into one
of the most predominate, resourceful, and involved organizations on campus by
bringing prominent guest speakers to campus, fundraising to support AMA
events, participating in educational events, and performing community service.
Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP)
AITP Student Chapter’s mission is to provide students taking courses in Business
Information Systems and Computer Systems an opportunity to gain information
on developments in the Information Systems and Technology fields, high growth
career areas, and facilitate professional networking by attending conferences,
visiting companies, and inviting guest speakers on new systems and technologies

Eastern Accounting Society
EAS provides its members with accounting experience and opportunities outside
of the classroom. Active participation in events allows students informal and
formal contact with accounting professionals. The Accounting Society encourages
the professional and personal development of an individual by enhancing

The mission of the Entrepreneurship Club at Eastern Connecticut State University is to further the knowledge and spirit of entrepreneurialism, to sponsor educational and social events at which the knowledge and skills in organizing, operating and assuming the risk of a business venture can be obtained, and to establish the networks that have become critical to success in the business world after graduation.

FSA enables its members to gain experience and exposure to a variety of career

IMA provides its members with accounting expertise, opportunities, and
networking experiences outside of the classroom. IMA also encourages the

Society for Human Resource Management
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management. The Society serves the needs of HR professionals and advances the interests of the HR profession. Founded in 1948, SHRM has more than 250,000 members in 140 countries and more than 575 affiliated chapters. Our mission is to gain knowledge and insight into the effective management of human capital. As a student club of the Eastern community, the Eastern Connecticut State University SHRM Student Chapter’s goal is to promote the exchange of work-related experiences of established business professionals with the academic perspectives of student and faculty members, through open forums and information exchanges.

Delta Mu Delta
Each year selected students are honored for distinguished academic
achievement by membership in the Delta Omega Chapter of Delta Mu
Delta, the National Honor Society for Accounting, Business
Administration, Business Information Systems, and Finance students.
Membership in Delta Mu Delta is an honor indicative of “earnest,
intelligent purpose and rewarding achievement”, the goals of the honor
society.
Upsilon Pi Epsilon
Students are selected each year for their distinguished academic
achievement in the field of Business Information Systems along with
those from Computer Science for membership into the Alpha
Connecticut Chapter of Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the International Honor
Society for Computing and Information Disciplines.
Alpha Mu Alpha
Each year selected Marketing students are honored for their
distinguished academic achievement by membership into Alpha Mu
Alpha, National Marketing Honorary Society, sponsored by the
American Marketing Association. Students eligible for Alpha Mu Alpha
are recognized for their outstanding scholastic achievement in the field
of Marketing.
University Honors Program Honors courses are frequently team-taught and involve off campus
experiences, and most Honors courses satisfy requirements in the University’s
Liberal Arts Core (LAC). The goal of the Honors Program is to provide
academically talented and venturesome students with an intellectually
stimulating alternate course of study, culminating in the completion of an
Honors Thesis reflective of quality undergraduate scholarship. Small classes,
interdisciplinary topics, and professors dedicated to teaching create an
atmosphere conducive to the open discussion of ideas and active learning. The
Honors Thesis requirement provides an opportunity for students to work
independently under the oversight of a faculty mentor.
