At the end of a department head’s five‐year term, a departmental review is normally conducted. In my case, as I approach the end of my second term, the process calls for an external review. This review was carried out in September by Dr. David Campbell, who oversees both academic and clinical services as the Chairman of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management, University of Saskatchewan and Saskatoon Health Region. Dr. Campbell spent two days here talking to about 50 people from both outside and inside the Department. We hope to have his report by the end of the month. A Search Committee, with representation from the Faculty, the hospitals and the Department, has been struck to find our next Chair of Anesthesia. I am confident that the Committee will exercise due diligence in its search, which will likely begin once the external review report arrives. Ottawa Anesthesia is a strong department and I expect this to be a competitive process. I encourage everyone to support the important work of the Search Committee.
A quick update from the chief and chair of the department, Dr. Homer Yang
On another front, the Family Practice‐Anesthesia (FP‐A) program underwent a review in the spring. I would like to commend our Program Director, Desiree Persaud, the RPC, and Holly Videto for doing an excellent job. The external reviewers were impressed by our FP‐A program. Apparently there are still ongoing debates within the College of Family Physicians of Canada about the half day back to family practice for these trainees; those debates were going on when I did my GP Anesthesia! Nevertheless, all our FP‐A trainees have indicated that they receive excellent Anesthesia training from us. For educators in Anesthesia, let me emphasize that the external reviewers’ comments and the residents’ feedback speak volumes to the quality of our FP‐A program. Thank you! Don’t forget Faculty Development Day id on November 12, 2012. Ben Sohmer, Director of Faculty Development, has organized an excellent day of activities. As well, our next annual Winterlude symposium takes place the weekend of February 2, 2013. This year, Dave Williams, an ER doctor and astronaut, will deliver the Earl Wynands Lecture, speaking on the subject of “Leadership in Patient Safety and Outreach." Please join us in these CME activities. Lastly, our uOttawa website has been re‐launched at http://www.med.uottawa.ca/anesthesia You can peruse our departmental report there. I want to again express our appreciation to Ilia Charapov for spearheading the website project in his usual, energetic way. Tara Fuller is our point person for the website and I sincerely thank her for all her hard work. On this and anything else, we welcome your feedback.

Report from the Program Director
The residency program continues in fine form for the 2012‐13 academic year. We started the academic year hot off the heels of yet another Golden Glottis Cup championship at the June 2012 Canadian Anesthesiologist Society Meeting. The cup was erroneously given to Western University but we are the official winners. In our championship photo below, you will see that I took the opportunity to stand on our incoming chief resident The championship revealed the many hidden circus talents of our residents.
Our recent University of Ottawa Program Survey completed by our residents demonstrated a loud and clear message of belief in the program and strengths in program leadership, educational curriculum, resident wellbeing, collegiality of the department, and professional development. We had a phenomenal CaRMS match and I would like to welcome our new PGY‐1 residents to our University of Ottawa Anesthesia Program:
Dr Arun Anand, University of Calgary Dr Colleen Daly, University of Ottawa Dr José De Wit, University of Ottawa Dr Kelvin Kwan, University of British Columbia Dr Elizabeth Miller, Queen’s University Dr Afra Moazeni Rizi, University of Saskatchewan Dr Karoll Rodelo Ceballos, International Medical School, Cartagena, Colombia Dr Alistair Smith, University of Saskatchewan Dr Kira Tone, International Medical School, Sydney, Australia
We have a number of other residents joining our program. Dr Colin Sentongo and Dr Vincent Dubois are our new FP‐Anesthesia residents and Dr Claudia Gomez returns to us as a new transfer in from McMaster University.
As with all successful programs, progress continues through change. This year we have two new positions in our program infrastructure. Firstly, in recognition of the unique set of objectives of our International Medical Graduates (IMG), Dr Lesley Silver has taken on the role of IMG coordinator. Additionally, in order to help off‐load and partition some of the work in the life of a busy Program Director, I have appointed Dr Tammy Barrows as our new Associate Program Director. Both Dr Silver and Dr Barrows will be part of our CaRMS team in 2013.

To this, we add a change in resident membership. I welcome Dr Dan McIsaac our Chief Resident, Dr Sandra Bromley our senior resident representative and Dr Lillia Fung, our CHEO scheduler. Drs Dan Dubois and Teresa Furtak are our newly appointed Ottawa/NOSM representatives and Dr Karim Abdulla is our fully elected ad hoc resident member. Dr Louise Sun is serving as interim resident research representative for Dr Manoj Lalu. Holly Videto our amazing Program Administrator (aka mother to all) has also joined our RPC committee. I am so lucky to have such a wonderful team helping us take our residents on their journey through to FRCPC anesthesia land The next new initiative is the integration of restricted duty hours into our adult anesthesia rotations. This began as a trial last February and is definitely here to stay. As always, the program remains responsive to resident input and we will continue to monitor the elective and emergency case exposures using a variety of sources including the national Resident Log Book. This year we will plan to develop more rotation specific evaluations, and continue to develop teaching of our non‐medical expert CanMeds roles. To that end, we have added a session on professionalism to our PGY‐1 lecture series. We are also in year two of our resident portfolio project. By the end of this academic year we will have completed portfolio collections of 4 of the 6 non‐medical expert CanMeds roles. The journal clubs that were previously headed by Dr Alan Chaput, are one of the highlights of the academic year. Dr Jordan Hudson has now taken on the role of journal club coordinator. She will also integrate critical appraisal with the resident core program themes.
Report from the Program Director
We are fortunate to have anesthesia resident representatives on major departmental, university, provincial and national committees. They are involved with a variety of clinical/educational research studies and serve as study participants in a number of educational research studies. (below: Dr Jordan Hudson and Dr Sandra Bromley: ICRE October 2012)
Our annual awards dinner in May 2013 seems far away, but please plan to come. This
night is primarily in honor of our graduating residents and will be for the first time at the National War Museum. It will be a
memorable evening.
There is no doubt that we have the best program in the country made possible by the best faculty and residents alike. Behind every resident is a team of amazing coaches and the positive ripple effect to all aspects of our training program and professional activity is clearly obvious. It truly does take a village. I am honored to be at the helm of this amazing program and look forward to the 2012/13 academic year. Sincerely, Desiree Persaud MD FRCPC Associate Professor University of Ottawa Program Director Anesthesiology
The membership of our core Residency Program Committee has also changed this year. I would like to welcome Dr Stéphane Moffett as the new General Campus Anesthesia Resident Coordinator (replacing Dr Tammy Barrows) and Dr Amy Roeske as the new CHEO Pediatric Anesthesia Resident Coordinator (replacing Dr Victor Neira). They join Dr Chris Hudson who became the new Heart Institute Cardiac Anesthesia Resident Coordinator earlier in the year (replacing Dr Donna Nicholson). Dr Patti Murphy is also standing in until January 2013 for Dr Anna Wyand as our interim Civic Campus Anesthesia resident coordinator.

Now for the bad news, Dr. Geraint Lewis, after being denied parole on many occasions has retired from the Pain Clinic after successfully completing his sentence. He will definitely be missed by all his patients, nurses and pain physician colleagues. His efforts in creating The Ottawa Hospital Pain clinic will not be forgotten. Thank you for all that you have done for the clinic and the community.
Tania Di Renna MD, FRCPC, Medical Director of The Ottawa Hospital Pain Clinic
Here, There and Everywhere!
Some great news and bad news from your colleagues at The Ottawa Hospital Pain Clinic.
Good news first. Our fellowship director, George Evans, would like to announce our two new Pain fellows, Dr. Jonathan Yen and Dr. Xiao Hong. Dr. Yen, an Ottawa native, completed his residency in the United Kingdom. Dr. Hong hales from Chengdu, Sichuan in China and has been practicing Anesthesiology and Pain for the last ten years. We are glad to have them here. The Pain Core Block will be taking place this year under the leadership of Yvette Grabowski who is our Pain resident co‐ordinator. The resident Pain rotation has also undergone some significant changes with restricted call and more exposure to the pain clinic. We always thought residency should be a bit more painful. Besides cycling, Cathy Smyth has been diligently working on the Pain Connect program that links community GPs to the Pain Clinic. She has been collaborating with Dr. Patricia Poulin and Dr. Howard Nathan on several research projects about this shared model of care. She has also been working at the Royal College level to have a recognized Pain Residency Program. Dr. Nathan has many research efforts including a study on the effects of Mindfulness Based Stress reduction on psychosocial function, pain and metabolism in patients with painful diabetic neuropathy. Many of our chronic pain patients are screaming to get into his very successful Mindful Meditation group sessions. Linda Wynne continues to make us extremely jealous with her world wide escapades and what she doesn’t know is that, in retort, we have given her home phone number to all of our patients . Dr. Patricia Poulin, our Pain psychologist has also been collaborating with Cathy Smyth and Howard Nathan on many research efforts. Clinically, she has also been extremely helpful with our most challenging cases. Gini Jarvis, APN extraordinaire, continues to help us with our in patient and outpatient intrathecal catheter patients and is a staple in our Complex Cancer Clinic.
This year’s Ride the Rideau raised 1.7 million dollars for cancer research and the Anesthesiology Department’s team, The Pain Killers, raised over $10,000 of that total thanks to our department’s generosity and that of other sponsors. The weather didn’t cooperate this year, though, and the organizers cancelled the event part way through due to the severe thunder and lighting storm that hit the city that day. The Pain Killers were 13 km into the ride when they had to take shelter from the weather. We were quite disappointed that the official “Ride the Rideau” event was cancelled. However, determined to ride to Merrickville anyway, we did the Ride on our own the next day (a beautiful, sunny day). We were also disappointed that Tania had to withdraw from the Ride at the last minute, but we know that she, and the rest of us, will be raring to go next year. Thanks again for your support! Cathy, Nik, Holly, Tania and Dan

News from CHEO… On a personal front
The CHEO group held a department retreat on October 20th, 2012 at Strathmere. The goal was to discuss what the department wants to work towards over the next few years. We are hoping this will become an annual event. Dr. Kimmo Murto is the project physician lead for CHEOnext. It is a project focused on refreshing CHEO's strategic directions to best equip our organization as we move into our fifth decade amidst changing demographics, new technologies and a very dynamic health care funding and policy environment. Dr. Dylan Bould is travelling to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), Lusaka, Zambia the month of October. Dr. Raylene Sauve will also be going for a Global Medical Education elective and they will be doing a mix of clinical and classroom teaching. The UTH is the largest hospital in Zambia and has all surgical subspecialties except for cardiac but is a fairly austere environment with extremely limited resources. The patient population is characterized by late presentation and a disproportionate burden of disease, particularly in the specialties of obstetrics, pediatric surgery and trauma with co‐morbidities such as malnutrition, HIV, tuberculosis, malaria and other tropical diseases. Dr. Nick Rastogi from the General will be a visiting faculty in January, taking Dr. Reva Ramlogan for an elective. Residents interested in electives at UTH in the future should contact Dr. Dylan Bould or Dr. Nick Rastogi. Dr. Bould is a visiting lecturer on the new anesthesiology residency program that he has helped to set up, they are now part way through the second year of the program with 6 PGY‐2 residents and 5 PGY‐1 residents (of a 4 year program). These will be the first physician anesthesiologists trained in Zambia since its existence as an independent country in 1964. As there are only 13 anesthesiologists in Zambia for a population of over 13 million they are sorely needed. If there are any staff anesthesiologists interested in becoming visiting faculty, or in the development of educational resources for this program, or with any appropriate equipment for donation please let Dr. Bould know.
Dr. Deborah Mervitz is expecting a little boy January 8th, 2013 and Dr. Amy Roeske is expecting twins March 2013. Dr. Lesley Silver recently got married in Hawaii on September 11, 2012 to Chris Porter. Dr. Rob Schwartz is engaged to be married to Amanda Reurekas on December 6, 2012.
