• DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF Operations at Mortimer Smelter consist of a Larox WASTE GENERATING PROCESS filtration plant, a Drytech flash drying plant, Hatch 38 MW

furnace and a 60 1/h matte crushing plant. Mortimer Smelter operations does not convert furnace matte, as such, final matte is sulphide rich and sent to the Anglo Platinum Converting Process at Waterval Smelter In Rustenburg. Furnace slag is granulated, and processed through a slag mill, or transferred to the slag dump

The following factors and criteria must be used to assess the impacts of the activities:

~ MAGNilVDE ISeveritl')

Criteria I DURATION

v hlgiJ_ 5- Permanent_{looger than 10 yt;ars} I 4- long-term {5 to 10 ~ears) ,

6-Moderate 3- Medium-term ( 12 months to 5 years) 4-Low 2 - Short-term LO to 12 months) 2-Minor 1 - Immediate

SCALE PROBABILITY (U kellhood} 5 - International 5- Definite 4- National 4 ·Highly J'ID)bable 3-Regional 3 - Medium probability 2-Local 2 - Low probabilit.L 1- SHe only 1 - Improbable I 0-None 0-None I

Mqnltude Magnitude measures the size of the Impact

Duration Duration refers to the lifetime of the Impact I.e. how long it wllllaat

Scale The scale refers to the extant of the impact.

Probability The probability refers to the chance of Impact to occur. The potential Impact could be moat likely to occur, unlikely,

etc.

Assessment of Significance of imoact

Significance rating of the potential Impacts Hlustrates the importance of the Impact itself. The size of area affected by pollution may be extremely high but the significance of this effect is dependent on the concentration or level of pollution In that area. In order to determine the significance of impact, the following method was used:

Significance Points (SP) = (Magnitude + Duration + Scale) x Probability

The values of SP are then ranged as follows: Riding Description

SP>BO Indicates high An impact which could influence the decision about whether or environmental not to proceed with the activities regardless of any possible significance ·mitigation.

SP30- Indicates moderate An Impact or benefit which is suff'ICienUy Important to require 80 environmental management and which could have an influence on the

significance decision unless It Is mitigated. SP<30 Indicates low I Impacts with little real effect and which will not have an Influence

environmental on or require modification of the activities. significance

+ Po•ltlva Impact An impact that Is likely to result In positive consequences/effects
