SMOLER INSTITUTE OF IMPLANT DENTISTRY
Dental implants are the new standard of care for tooth
replacement and often the best treatment for missing teeth.
They bond with healthy bone and provide permanent
support for dental crowns and dentures. Dental implants
look and feel like natural teeth and can last a lifetime.
When a damaged or decayed tooth is removed, both the
visible part of the tooth, called the crown, and the root
are lost. A dental implant is placed in the jawbone so that
it can fuse with your natural bone and become a strong
and sturdy foundation for replacement teeth. Implants can
be used to replace an individual tooth or for an implant-
supported bridge or denture containing multiple teeth.
Dental implants are the closest you can get to healthy,
natural teeth. They will allow you to confidently eat, smile,
laugh, talk, play, and enjoy all of your regular activities of
everyday life without thinking about your teeth.
Dental implants have three components:
• Dental Implant – A cylindrical and/or tapered
post, made of titanium, which serves as a substitute
for the tooth root. This goes into the jawbone to create
a secure structure. The implant surface coating and
thread design are major factors Dr. Smoler takes into
account for his patient’s health and well-being.
• Abutment – A connector, placed on, or built into,
the top of the dental implant, to connect the implant to
the replacement tooth or teeth. There are 3 main types
of abutments: stock, angled and custom made from
titanium alloy, gold or white ceramic or zirconium.
Individual clinical needs help to determine the best
option for each patient.
• Crown – A replacement tooth, custom made to
match your natural teeth. Usually made from either
porcelain fused to metal or an all porcelain type of
crown (cap).

What is a Dental Implant?A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the bone
beneath the gums, where it can serve as a replacement tooth
root. Titanium is osteophilic (bone-loving), which means bone
cells will attach to and integrate with it. The implant body often
includes ridges or threads that also help it anchor to the bone.
Implants provide an immovable support for the natural-looking
replacement teeth that are attached to them.
WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS?
WWW. 855NEEDTEETH.COM
Teeth restored with dental implants look, feel, and function just like natural teeth. You brush, floss, and visit your dentist for
regular check-ups and cleanings, same as you would care for a natural tooth.
After meeting with Dr. Smoler to develop your treatment plan, the placement of a dental implant usually involves several steps:
HOW DO DENTAL IMPLANTS WORK?
1 2 3 4
The dental implant,
usually a cylindrical and/
or tapered post made
of titanium, is placed
surgically into the jawbone.
As you heal, your implant
will fuse with your natural
jawbone to form a strong
and long-lasting foundation
for your replacement teeth.
This healing process can
take weeks to months.
Once the implant bonds
with the jawbone, a small
connector – called an
abutment – is placed
on top of the dental implant
to connect the implant to
the replacement tooth or
teeth.
An individual tooth or an
implant-supported bridge
containing multiple teeth
are then attached to the
abutment.

Why Choose Dental Implants?Crowns, bridges and dentures
address the short-term cosmetic
problem of missing teeth but do
nothing to stop bone loss. Crown &
bridge dentistry requires grinding
down healthy teeth leaving them
at much greater risk for cavities
and tooth failure. Bridges do
not stop bone loss. Dentures
become uncomfortable and
unstable over time as the jawbone
shrinks causing eating and speech
problems.
With dental implants, healthy
teeth are not compromised.
Dental implants, like natural teeth,
stimulate the jaw and stop bone
loss. Leading dental organizations
recognize dental implants as
the standard of care for tooth
replacement.
Do you or a loved one suffer from missing teeth? If so, you
are not alone. Many adults suffer from the pain, discomfort and
embarrassment of missing teeth,
and this number increases every
year. Fortunately, Dr. Bruce
Smoler and Smoler Institute
of Implant Dentistry, has three
convenient locations in Michigan
(Westland, Rochester Hills, &
West Bloomfield). Dr. Smoler and his team has the experience and
expertise to magically make your
problems disappear. In less than
one day with Smoler Institute
Express Teeth In A Day (Express
All-on-4), you can change your life!Unlike natural-tooth-supposed
bridgework, dental implants don’t
require adjacent healthy teeth
to be filed down. Implants don’t lead to an increased risk of gum
disease, tooth decay, or a root
canal problem.
For instance: removable dentures.
Implants won’t shift or feel
uncomfortable. They don’t develop
odors or need special cleaners and
adhesives. They don’t restrict what
foods you can eat or make you feel
uncomfortable about chewing,
speaking, or smiling. And you’ll
never have to worry about them
slipping or falling out.
One of the biggest benefits of dental implants is that they can
help reduce bone loss in the jaw.
The natural erosion of bone
begins as soon as a tooth is lost–
and, if more tooth loss occurs, it
may result in the loss of other teeth
and lead to a sunken, prematurely
aged look in one’s facial features.
Because dental implants integrate
into bone, they provide a stimulus
that keeps the jawbone from
deteriorating. This helps to
maintain a more youthful facial
structure–and better oral health.
And another major benefit of implants is the lasting value they
offer. With proper care, they can last for the rest of your life, on top
of the main benefit: they make you feel like a young, healthier you!
