Earl O. Bergersen DDS,MSD will be presentingon the most efficient andcost effective techniquesto straighten teeth withoutbraces.

Q: What makes Ortho-Tain Appliances so unique?

A: The Ortho-T technique is the superior,

techniques?

• As previously stated, Ortho-T is worn1-2 hours per day; treatment time is 2-12months which is approximately 1/3 thetime of most other procedures.• Ortho-T’s cost is 1/4 to 1/2 that of fixedtreatment.• Ortho-T corrects overbite, overjet, crowding, spacing and TMJ.• Ortho-T requires only one appliancewhich is worn for both active treatment aswell as retention. If relapse occurs 10 yearslater, the same appliance can be used.

most effective choice of adult orthodontictreatment without braces. Ortho-T’sunique design allows permanent dentitionto be guided into a perfect class I occlu-sion with only one appliance worn 1-2hours per day. The Ortho-T techniquetakes 1/5 the time of fixed treatment.

Q: What benefits does the Ortho-Ttechnique for adult treatment withoutbraces have over other adult treatment

• No interruptions or changing of appli-ance if dental work is done. Any typeof treatment—bridgework, extractions, implants; do not affect the fit of the ap-pliance.

Q: How difficult is it for a dentist tounderstand and implement the Ortho-T technique?

A:Attending a one-day course or view-ing our seminar on DVD will provide thenecessary knowledge. Ortho-T is the eas-iest appliance to use on the market.

Q: How many patients have been

treated with the Ortho-T?

A: Over 3 million.

Q: Ortho-Tain also has an orthodontictreatment procedure for teenagers andyoung children?

• Occlus-o-Guide can be used for almostall malocclusions from 8-12 years of age.• Nite-Guide is used during the eruptionof the upper and lower incisors—onlypassively while sleeping.

Q: Does the Occlus-o-Guide and Nite-Guide work similarly as the Ortho-Tfor adult?

A: Almost the same way, except there is

more room for crowding at the ages of 5-12 due to larger posterior deciduousteeth.

Q: Is the Nite-Guide the only earlytreatment device on the market thatcan straighten the incoming adult den-tition with only nighttime wear?

• Yes. The Nite-Guide allows the teeth toerupt straight. The fiber bundles developin that position so there is minimal or norelapse according to research to date.• Research also shows that children onlyneed to wear the Nite-Guide for 1-hourof sleeping time and will receive thesame results in most cases as a fullnight’s wear.• Research also shows 93 percent of

Practice management software is the hubof every successful dental office. Blend-ing a full suite of automated tools with anintuitive interface, CS SoftDent hashelped dental offices perform daily tasksmore efficiently for more than 25 yearsand continues to provide add-ons to meetthe shifting needs of the oral healthcareindustry. To further maximize its effec-tiveness, Carestream Dental’s latest Soft-Dent release includes a newscheduler—the most advanced schedul-ing software in the dental industry.

Designed to meet the requirementsof each dental office, SoftDent users canselect a number of innovative featuresand add-ons to customize their software.Whether dental practitioners are inter-ested in managing time more effectivelyor setting up detailed financial reports,SoftDent has several features that makeit possible to reach practice goals.

critical daily tasks, but also allows dentalpractitioners to easily access patientcharts and diagnostic information fromone central location.

The latest version of SoftDent alsofeatures a new Software Update System. When selected, this tool automaticallypushes updates to practice computers, eliminating the need for manual down-loads and ensuring users have the latestavailable features.

To complement the features alreadyavailable in SoftDent, Carestream Dentalhas launched the all-new scheduler tosimplify routine tasks and accommodatethe busy front desk environment. Intu-itive and easy-to-use, the scheduler deliv-ers multitasking capabilities so users canquickly return to where they have left offwhen interrupted by other activities. For the past decade I have been practic-ing laser dentistry and a few years ago Iupgraded to the dual wavelengthEr:YAG/Nd:YAG all tissue laser (LightWalker, Technology4Medicine—www.T4Med.com ) and have been ex-tremely pleased with this laser. Mypatients have been happy as well.

The Er:YAG wavelength is excellentfor both hard and soft tissue procedures. It has replaced my high-speed handpiecefor most operative dentistry and nearly 90percent of these procedures are achievedwith no local anesthesia. It also allows forprecise soft tissue procedures such as gin-

givectomy, frenectomy, and biopsy withremarkably comfortable and rapid post-operative healing. The combined tissueabilities of the Er:YAG laser gives me theability to perform osseous crown length-ening without scalpels or burs and withminimal discomfort. I now perform manyprocedures I used to refer out with theadded benefit that I know my patientswill have a more comfortable and lessanxiety producing experience than tradi-

tional methods.Laser assisted endodontics is an-

other area where Er:YAG laser helpssignificantly. Laser activated irriga-tion allows for more thorough threedimensional cleansing of the rootcanal system through a patentedprocess know as Photon Induced Pho-toacoustic Streaming (PIPS). I havebeen amazed by the results I am get-ting with PIPS and am now referring

fewer root canals for specialist treatment.Photo Activated Systems Technol-

ogy, or PHAST, is the scientific founda-tion for the Lightwalker Er:YAG and thebasis for PIPS as well as other advancedclinical laser procedures.

Often these days, intro-ductions aren’t madewith a handshake.Whether it’s engagingpatients through socialmedia, direct mail, or bytelephone, it’s the mes-sage that will convertand retain more patients. In the competitive dentalsector, it’s important tointroduce your personalstyle, professionalism, and competitivevalue proposition throughout your mar-keting and advertising campaigns. Thiswill build and strengthen patient relation-ships which, in turn, will improve prac-tice valuation. So how do you make sureyou’re attracting patients and sustainingtheir attention and not just interruptingthem with ads?

Quality content that delivers resultsis the central theme at Patient News(Booth #5460). How much more effec-tive could your front desk team be with

personalized newsletter and postcardcampaign, that truly reflects you and yourpractice services and that drives moreideal educated patients to your website, your phone and your door? Not so easy…but much more effective.

At Patient News (Booth #5460)they’re always working on new ways togenerate more new patients for theirclients. For example Patient News clientDr. Gross welcomed 747 new patients inone year and client Dr. Suvarna increased

2. The practitioner believes that his or herrequired treatment room layout, andtherefore equipment costs, is far in excessof that actually needed.

3. The doctor has been unable to designenough treatment capacity into the officespace available, because of a mispercep-tion about treatment room size require-ments.

Operatory productivity is a function ofoperatory organization, practitioner skilllevel and office design. Our studies indi-cate most motivated practitioners possessan adequate understanding of the proce-dure techniques necessary to providegreat customer satisfaction. Therefore, ithas been our experience that the remain-ing elements (design & organization) arethe keys to unlocking heightened officeproductivity potential.

1.Our studies have shown that in virtu-ally every practice a higher level of oper-atory organization must occur beforeconsistently high quality and productivitycan be achieved day in day out.

2.We have found that maximal organiza-tion efficiency cannot be achieved withan excessive equipment array. More isclearly not better.

Therefore, equipping for high perform-ance is both less expensive and more pro-

ductive than conventional layouts. Yoursavings come in many areas:

1.You will decrease cabinetry expenses.

2.A smaller room size is ideal for morecompact and efficient equipping.

3.Central resupply of consumable prod-ucts reduces inventory needs.

4.A cassette system saves money by re-ducing hand instrument expenses.

5.As sterilization efficiency increases, turn around time decreases.

6. Compact, high performance offices areeasier and less expensive to clean.

Consolidating your treatment space suchthat it is truly shared by doctor and assis-tant just makes sense and it saves youmoney.

Unique to AvaDent is the all-impor-tant digital record that allows the dentistto offer their patients a new degree ofconvenience and security never beforepossible. If an AvaDent is broken or lostan identical AvaDent can be fabricatedwithout patient involvement and sent di-rectly to the dentist.

The AvaDent digital record also al-lows the dentist to create a removable“treatment plan,” that offers their patientsthe promise of uncompromised quality

New at Global Dental ScienceThe AvaDent Advanced Try-In.For those dentists who have asked for atry-in to supplement the standard two ap-pointment protocol, AvaDent now offersan Advanced Try-In option. This however,is no standard try-in. It is built on a strongmilled foundation and the teeth are set ina ridge of wax. This allows the dentist tomake the functional and aesthetic changesnecessary to best serve their patients.

is with students, practitioners or distri-bution partners, our skilled sales forceand global education group does an un-believable job in communicating thevarious products, service offerings andcommunity engagement programs wehave that add value to the lives of dentalprofessionals. In addition to our people,we have embraced technology as an-other way to educate on our overall so-lution portfolio. We offer many CEclasses online and continue to invest inonline communities like our Friends ofHu-Friedy platform, which brings amessage of education and partnership tothe dental community.

Q: Having such an expansive productline has its advantages, but what aresome of the challenges you face formanaging a large product line?

A: One of the challenges is recognizingthe size of our product lineup and work-ing to maintain proper inventory levelswhile focusing on our commitment to fillorders promptly. We are also constantlyevaluating our lines and working to opti-mize our offerings to match the ever-changing trends in dentistry.

Q: You mentioned that you have beeninvesting in technology and onlinecommunities, tell me more about that.

A: We recently reached two importantmilestones in our online engagement.First, we brought our instrument recy-cling program, Environdent, online. Now, instead of receiving a box andform from us to fill out and send in,customers can submit their informationon Environdent.com and print out aunique bar code to include with theirshipment. This makes the whole recy-cling process more eco-friendly and

our customers receive their free instru-ments much faster. The other milestonewas the addition of our 25,000th mem-ber to Friends of Hu-Friedy, our onlinedental hygiene community. The dentalprofessionals we’ve brought togetherare a striking example of our commit-ment to inspire performance by unitingand educating dental professionalsworldwide.

Q. What do you see as future opportu-nities for the company?

A: One opportunity I see is a continuedfocus on our Instrument ManagementSystem (IMS) offerings. As the needfor better infection control protocolsbecome more critical, our system helpswith compliance, safety and efficiency. In addition, as implants become a big-ger focus for the industry, we continueto offer a wide range of instrumentsthat not only help with the placement

HU-FRIEDY(continued from page 1)

of implants, but with the necessarymaintenance and long-term care. Weare also focused on pediatric dentistrywith our kid-friendly Rainbow pedi-atric forceps and stainless steel PedoCrowns.

Q: Are there any specials or promo-tions that you are focusing on at theshow?

A: To go along with the continued focuson our Instrument Management System,we will have a special ‘Practice More’challenge at our booth designed to edu-cate professionals on how they can prac-tice more time savings, chairsideefficiency, organization techniques andsafety protocols.

instruments, that’s not so surprising. The surprising part is this: Of those

17,000-plus parts, NSK manufacturesmore than 85 percent in-house. The com-pany even designs and builds the equip-ment it uses to manufacture and test thoseparts — so it can ensure micron-order ac-curacy. It’s all part of an obsessive focuson quality control that dates to the com-pany’s founding in Japan in 1930.

Today, NSK products have proventheir worth in more than 130 countries —including the United States. and Canada, which are served by NSK America, nowcalled NSK Dental LLC.

The philosophy of building the ma-chines to build the parts to build the prod-uct has followed the company into everymarket it enters. Additionally, the organi-zation’s management structure puts con-trol at regional levels to ensure promptproduct delivery and responsive after-sales servicing. Just as important, it’swithin the various regions that the com-pany constantly solicits feedback fromusers of its products. The goal is to beable to swiftly respond to local needs.

It’s all about the handControl of all aspects of the develop-ment process helps NSK ensure timelyregulatory compliance, improve reliabil-ity and shorten development time. But

even more critical to NSK is the directchannel its processes create betweenproduct users and developers. With itsdental instruments in particular, much ofthe focus goes directly to the hand of theend user. “Handpieces and the HumanHand — Powerful Partners” is the com-pany’s core branding message. The goalis an ergonomic design that becomes anextension of the dental professional’shand, transmitting intentions of delicatehand movements promptly and preciselyto the target.

A tradition of innovationRecent NSK advancements include an ul-trasonic scaler and tooth polisher; bone-cutting instruments that employ ultrasonic

Pregnant patients may ask you aboutteeth whitening when they schedule den-tal examinations. Often pregnant patientsare concerned about yellow teeth, partic-ularly if they suffer from morning sick-ness. When patients vomit, the acidicfood penetrates their enamel, which en-hances the likelihood of staining.

years, Walsh came up with a concept thatwould benefit dentists, consumers andemployers across the country.

The idea was to create a nationalDental GRID, connecting participatingBlue Cross and Blue Shield dentist net-works nationwide—making it easier forpatients to find a participating dentistwhere they live, even if their employeris based in another state. He discussedthis idea with executives at other Blueplans and soon, the national DentalGRID was created.

Walsh recently participated in aquestion-and-answer session where hediscussed the national Dental GRID’sbenefits for dentists.

Q: Please give us a brief overview ofthe national Dental GRID.

A: The national Dental GRID (theGRID) is one of the country’s largestdentist networks and it continues to grow.It is exclusively for customers of partici-pating Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans. The idea behind the GRID was to createa central data repository where participat-ing Blue Cross and Blue Shield planscould share their network information. This effectively links their dentist net-works, providing customers and their em-ployees with seamless, hassle-free accessto network dentists nationwide.

It’s exactly the sort of network that large,multi-state employers want for their em-ployees—and it puts more of these em-

ployees in participating dentists’ chairs.

Q: What does it mean to dentists?

A:We know people who see their dentistregularly have better oral health. Our ownexperience and studies show that peoplewho have dental benefits are more likelyto see their dentist regularly.

For participating dentists, the GRIDmakes it easier for more local patients tochoose their office for dental care be-cause of their in-network status for BlueCross and Blue Shield members who livein their state, but whose employer may bebased in another state.

In other words, the GRID increases adentist’s potential patient base.

ANTHEM BLUE CROSS(continued from page 1)

Q: Will this change a participating den-tist’s reimbursement or relationshipwith their local Blue plan?

A: Nothing changes about the dentist’slocal Blue relationship. Their reimburse-ment does not change either.

No matter where their patient’s employeris based, the dentist will receive the samereimbursement they currently receivefrom their local plan, provided they par-ticipate in their local Blue plan’s networkor another participating network.
