Implant dentistry is one of the most prominent scientific advances in modern dentistry. It is one of the most common solutions for replacing missing teeth. Despite the high reliability of osseointegration, however, complications such as peri-implant disease can occur.

Oral Microbiology for Dental Hygienists

Bacteria in the oral cavity mainly grow by forming microbial aggregates. This growth in a biofilm form provides a high level of both physical and chemical protection against mechanical and antimicrobial treatments. This poses a great challenge to clinicians for keeping the oral ecosystem in balance with a patient’s oral health. High microbial diversity has been described in different oral niches, including the periodontal pathogens considered to be the main etiological agents of periodontal disease.

Microbiological diagnosis in periodontics is a basic tool that allows for the identification of the pathogenic microorganisms that cause the disease, and for the use of specific antimicrobials, as appropriate in each case.

Therefore, oral health professionals could use microbiological diagnosis in their daily practice as adjunct testing to facilitate the treatment of oral diseases, mainly periodontal disease.
