In 1986 Spain adopted the EU-sponsored QWPSR (Quality Wine Produced in Specific Regions) regulatory code (Vino de Calidad Producido en Región Determinada (VCPRD) and in 2011, Spain was recorded as having approximately 120 regions that received geographical classification for cultivating wines.

Sidra is the traditional drink of Asturias. It is made from locally-grown apples in Asturias, has been produced here since ancient times and is considered the regional “wine.”
