From the Editor We are already busy preparing for the 2016 Scandinavian

Festival – can you believe it’s the fifth festival this year!

We are keen to hear from you if you would like to volunteer to work for a couple of hours either setting up or packing up,

preparing hot dogs or smørre-brød, selling raffle tickets – we need you. It takes many volunteers to make a successful festival and we hope you’ll join up to help the club.

The VOLVO Scandinavian Film Festival at Palace Barracks continues to the end of July

with lots of opportunities to watch a Scandinavian movie on the big screen. It’s also time to renew your membership – the club year runs from 1 July to 30 June. See payment details inside the newsletter or pay at Café Danmark. See you there!

Legegruppen mødes hver fredag i Heimdals lokaler fra 9.30 til kl 11.30.

Aldersgruppen er fra 0 til 5 år, søskende til yngre børn er selvfølgelig

Vi starter altid med formiddagskaffe og hjemmebagte boller, efterfølgende

varierer aktiviteterne med fri leg, hoppeborg, tegning og sanglege mv. Vi skiftes

til at medbringe boller og tilbehør.

The Convict King

Jørgen Jørgensen (surname also spelled Jürgensen, and changed to Jorgenson from 1817) (29

March 1780 – 20 January 1841) was a Danish adventurer during the Age of Revolution. During

the Action of 2 March 1808 his ship was captured by the British. In 1809 he sailed to Iceland,

declared the country independent from Denmark and pronounced himself its ruler. He was also a

prolific writer of letters, papers, pamphlets and newspaper articles covering a wide variety of

subjects, and was an associate of the famous botanists Joseph Banks and William Jackson

Hooker for a period. Marcus Clarke referred to Jørgensen as "a singularly accomplished fortune

wooer—one of the most interesting human comets recorded in history".

At the age of 15, Jørgensen served as an apprentice to Captain Henry Marwood of the

British collier Janeon. In 1799 he sailed to Cape Town and from there in 1800 to Port Jackson, the

new British colony in Australia. In 1801 he joined the crew of the Lady Nelson. As a member of

that crew, Jørgensen was present at the establishment of the first settlements of Risdon

Cove and Sullivans Cove in Van Diemen's Land, as Tasmania was then called.

In 1807, while Jørgensen was visiting his family, he witnessed the Battle of Copenhagen and soon

afterwards was given command of a small Danish vessel, the Admiral Juul. In 1808 he engaged in

a sea battle with HMS Sappho; the British captured the Admiral Juul and treated Jørgensen as

a privateer. In 1809, while on parole, he suggested to a merchant that a voyage to Iceland could

be profitable as the island was suffering from food shortages at the time, due to the Danish

monopoly on Icelandic trade. Jørgensen accompanied the voyage of the Clarence as an inter-

preter. That voyage failed to trade any goods as the ship was British and by that time Denmark

and Britain were at war. Soon after, Jørgensen sailed on a second voyage. On arrival in Iceland

the ship's crew found the Danish Governor, Count of Trampe, would still not permit trading. With

the help of other crew members, Jørgensen managed to arrest the governor and proclaimed

himself 'Protector', promising that he would reinstate the Althing as soon as the Icelandic people

were able to govern themselves. His intent was to establish a liberal society in the spirit of those

emerging in the Americas and Europe at the time. With the arrival of HMS Talbot two months later,

Danish government was restored and Jørgensen was taken back to England and tried by

the Transport Board, who found him guilty of breaking his parole while a prisoner-of-war. He was

released in 1811.

Jørgensen spent the next few years in London, where he began to drink heavily and gamble

compulsively, building up substantial debts which eventually led to his conviction and incarcer-

ation. When released from prison in 1812, he travelled to Spain, Portugal and Gibraltar and upon

his return to England was again imprisoned when his creditors caught up with him. Following

correspondence with the British Foreign Office, Jørgensen was recruited into the intelligence

service, where he translated documents and travelled throughout France and Germany as a spy

as the Napoleonic Wars drew to a close. Upon returning to England, Jørgensen continued to write

various reports, papers and articles but after being accused of theft in 1820, was imprisoned

in Newgate Prison, released, and sent back there when he failed to leave Britain (a condition of his

parole). A sentence of death was commuted thanks to the actions of a prominent friend and he

spent another 3 years in Newgate before he was transported to Australia in 1825.

After five months at sea, Jørgensen arrived back in Tasmania in 1826. In 1827, after he helped

prevent the circulation of forged treasury bills, a group of local merchants headed by Anthony

Fenn Kemp petitioned the governor for Jørgensen to be granted a ticket of leave. Jørgensen led

several explorations of Tasmania, and was employed by the Van Diemen's Land Council as a

Constable, taking part in the 'Black Line' aboriginal clearance exercise. Jørgensen obtained a free

pardon in 1835 but remained in Tasmania. He married an Irish convict, Norah Corbett, in 1831 and

died in the Colonial Hospital on 20 January 1841.

Icelanders refer to Jørgensen as Jörundur hundadagakonungur ("Jørgen the Dog-Days King"), a

reference to the time when the dog star is in the sky.

SWEDES DOWN UNDER CELEBRATE MIDSUMMER

The winters in Scandinavia are long and dark and it’s no wonder that the arrival of summer is a big

deal throughout the Nordic countries. In Sweden, Midsummer’s Eve is one of the most important

days of the year.

Many countries celebrate the summer solstice with huge outdoor bonfires. Not so in Sweden.

Instead the focus of Midsummer celebrations is the maypole (or Midsummer pole) decorated with

greenery and flowers. As it turns out, the maypole is a comparatively new part of Swedish

Midsummer tradition. It came to Sweden in the late Middle Ages from Germany, where the pole

was decorated with leaves and raised on May 1. Since spring comes later to Sweden it was hard

to find the greenery to decorate the pole on May 1, so the tradition was moved to Midsummer.

The tradition of dancing around the Midsummer pole is an old one, though of course the dances

have changed over the centuries. Today organized Swedish Midsummer festivals typically include

exhibitions of folk dancing in traditional costumes, as well as ring dances and games for people of

all ages to join in. No Midsummer celebration is complete without Små grodorna, a dancing game

in which people of all ages hop around the pole while singing about little frogs. The goofiness is

part of the fun!

Midsummer was a time of magic, and anything to do with nature was thought to have a special

power. Gathering flowers to weave into wreaths and crowns was a way to harness nature’s magic

to ensure good health throughout the year. Even though most people these days probably are

unaware of the magical origins of the tradition, weaving crowns of flowers is still a major part of

any Midsummer observance.

The magic of Midsummer also extends to the realm of romance. A Swedish verse says,

“Midsummer night is not long but it sets many cradles to rock.” For unmarried girls, it’s said that if

you pick seven (or sometimes nine) types of flowers and place them under your pillow, you’ll

dream of your future husband.

recess’. Will it resume when Mik Aidt is back from his break? Watch this space.

SBS on Demand gives you access to many Danish series, old and new,

Our membership is still hovering around the 300 mark. Very impressive. Now

the aim is to get everyone to renew. Don’t forget to pay your membership

Udlandsdanskere advarer om, at flere vil fravælge Danmark Nu er det bare for meget, siger forening for udlandsdanskere efter ny stramning af danske udlændingeregler.

Afskaffelsen af 26-års-reglen kommer til at betyde, at Danmark går glip af dansk arbejdskraft, der har dygtiggjort sig og hentet vigtige kompetencer og viden rundt om i verden.

Det siger Anne Marie Dalgaard, generalsekretær i Danes Worldwide, der er talerør for

udlandsdanskere.

»Nu er det bare for meget. Nu må vi sige stop«.

»Det her vil være yderst skadeligt for Danmark og udløse et ramaskrig hos

udlandsdanskere. Rigtig mange vil fravælge Danmark«, siger Anne Marie Dalgaard.

Ligesom foreningen Ægteskab uden Grænser mener Danes Worldwide nemlig også, at

især udlandsdanskere vil blive ramt af de nye stramninger, der gør det endnu sværere

for danske statsborgere at bringe en udenlandsk ægtefælle med til Danmark.

Fremover skal alle uanset alder leve op til tilknytningskravet for at kunne bosætte sig i

Danmark med en udenlandsk ægtefælle.

Anne Marie Dalgaard kalder beslutningen om at skrotte 26-års-reglen for

'uigennemtænkt' og 'ualmindelig uheldig'.

Hun vurderer, at omkring 250.000 danskere er bosat i udlandet. Heraf bor cirka hver

femte udlandsdansker i USA.

GOLD COAST (‘GULDKYSTEN’)

SYNOPSIS

In 1836, the young and visionary botanist Wulff is sent to Africa by the King of Denmark

to establish coffee plantations. Behind him awaits the love of his life. Ahead an

adventure into unknown territory that will change his young life forever. The slave trade

no longer takes place at the Danish trading posts on the Gold Coast. But soon the locals

ravage the plantations he sows, and Wulff starts to unravel a conspiracy that penetrates

the very heart of the governorate.

ABOUT THE MOVIE AND THE DIRECTOR

Director Daniel Dencik has written the screenplay for Gold Coast, which is partly based

on personal letters and diaries from the Danish botanist Wulff Joseph Wulff. The feature

film is inspired by real people and events from the period around the end of the

transatlantic slave trade. Gold Coast was shoot in Ghana in the summer of 2014, and

tells a story that uncovers a piece of a forgotten history of Denmark.

Daniel Dencik is an award winning writer, editor and director. He has written 5 books

and published by Gyldendal. Since 2012, he has directed 3 documentaries. "Gold Coast"

is Daniel Dencik's debut as a feature film director.

Inderhavnsbroen Fra Wikipedia, den frie encyklopædi

Inderhavnsbroen er en 180 m lang bro i Københavns havn mellem Havnegade ved Nyhavn og Nordatlantens Nordatlantens Brygge/Grønlandske Handels Plads (over Inderhavnen). Broen er en gave fra A.P. Møller og Hustru Chastine Mc-Kinney Møllers Fond til almene Formaal.

Inderhavnsbroen, Trangravsbroen og Proviantbroen gør det f.eks. lettere for fodgængere og cyklister at komme fra Havnegade ved Nyhavn til Operaen på Holmen.

Historie

Inderhavnsbroens indvielse er blevet forsinket flere gange. Den seneste alvorlige fejl blev konstateret i november 2015, hvorefter Københavns Kommune meddelte, at den endelige åbning var udsat på ubestemt tid, indtil et nyt boogiesystem var blevet konstrueret, installeret og testet.

Der var mange ingeniørfejl under byggeriet og sammen med entreprenørfirmaet E. Pihl & Søns konkurs har dette hævet prisen fra forventede 202 millioner til estimerede (2014) 305 millioner. Broen blev åbnet den 7. juli 2016.

Øgenavne

Broen kaldes også Kyssebroen, fordi de to broklapper ligner tunger, når de mødes. De mange byggefejl og nærheden til Pusher Street har givet broen øgenavnet Den Skæve Bro.

Stadig problemer

Efter indvielsen har det vist sig, at den blå cykelsti på broen bliver meget glat i vådt føre og flere cyklister vælter. Problemet er ikke nyt og har tidligere voldt problemer andre steder.
