Democracy is government in which power and civicresponsibility are exercised by all adult citizens, directly, orthrough their freely elected representatives.

Democracy rests upon the principles of majority rule and

individual rights. Democracies guard against all-powerfulcentral governments and decentralize government toregional and local levels, understanding that all levels ofgovernment must be as accessible and responsive to thepeople as possible.

Democracies understand that one of their prime functionsis to protect such basic human rights as freedom of speechand religion; the right to equal protection under law; andthe opportunity to organize and participate fully in thepolitical, economic, and cultural life of society.

Democracies conduct regular free and fairelections open to citizens of voting age.

Citizens in a democracy have not only rights, but also the responsibility to participate in thepolitical system that, in turn, protects their

rights and freedoms. Democratic societies are committed to thevalues of tolerance, cooperation, andcompromise. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi,

"Intolerance is itself a form of violence and anobstacle to the growth of a true democraticspirit.

    Freedom

Democratic states nearly always have freerpeople than autocratic states. They obviously

have the right to vote for their government soby extension deciding the policy of their nationand what their nation should be like. Theyhave more freedom of speech and expression

than in autocracies. In particular they are freeto criticise their own government.

    Represents the people

The biggest virtue of Democracy is that it isgovernment by the people for the people. The

government represents the views of the peoplewho elect them and can throw them out if thegovernment does things that the people do notlike. Unlike other forms of government

democracy is about the little man, everyonerather than the elite that are often disconnectedfrom how everyone else lives their lives.

    Respect of Human Rights

Democracy as much it is understood, is thegovernment of the people, by the people andfor the people.

If democracy is put at it appropriateperformance, then, all facet of human rights isrespected. The citizens would have the rights toexercise freedom of speech concerning the

well-being of the populace in areas of theeconomy, education, health, infrastructuraldevelopment, etc.

Better governance due to transparencyDemocracy is as much about having checks andbalances to the executive and having transparencyof decision-making as it is about elections and thepopulace throwing governments out of power. In ademocracy the parliament, the media andsometimes the judiciary all keep an eye on theexecutive and what is being done with the peoplesmoney. They are therefore able to see if theexecutive is doing things that are detrimental tothe country, are immoral, or even illegal. This canthen be brought to a halt. Even where such actionsare not visible on the surface there are separateinstitutions that have the power to investigate theexecutive and watch any secret deals or actionsthat are going on away from public view.

Economic growthThis is not the case. The most developed and richestcountries are all democracies. While they may wellhave been developing their democracies during theirinitial industrialisation democracy and the freedom itbrings is increasingly necessary for economic growthonce the country has moved to being mostlydependent upon services rather than manufacturing ornatural resource exploitation for economic growth.Once this occurs then creativity becomes important

and the freedoms associated with democracy areneeded to foster this creativity that is needed forindustries such as information technology, creativearts, research and development etc.

Democracy is a new thing in the world; well-developed formsof it have been in practice less than a century. We are stilllearning what it is and how to operate it. New features arecontinually being offered and put on trial; no doubt there is agreat deal more to be learned about it. We would best handle itas learners, in the humble spirit of one who seeks to know thetruth. Democracy is a system of government that is right forIndonesia as the country's multi-cultural which involves thedirect role of government of the people without distinction ofethnicity, race, and religion.

The people feel free to express their aspiration because thereare laws that protect them, it trains people to resolve problemswith the deliberations, the power is in the hands of the people,so there is no leader of an arbitrary or ototriter, the govermentcould be more opened and transparent
