demartek 16gb lpe16000b lab evaluation webcast
DESCRIPTION
Demartek audited the results of some tests recently completed using the Emulex LPe16000B 16GFC HBA. This data shows that the new LPe16000B performance is the fastest Fibre Channel HBA in the market. The LPe16000B uses a new on-board controller that delivers 1.2 million IOPS at 512 bytes, 1K byte and 2K byte block sizes for reads, writes and a read/write mix and all with extremely fast response times. The LPe16000B series HBAs are an outstanding solution for growing performance needs including supporting more virtualized servers, larger and faster database applications, SSDs, flash caching and more.TRANSCRIPT

Fibre Channel (FC) Marketplace
Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA) – 2012: Year of “10-10-10”– 10 Million Fibre Channel ports shipped (switch ports plus adapter ports)– $10 Billion invested in Fibre Channel technology– 10 Exabytes (EB) of storage shipped
Estimates are $100 Billion has been invested in Fibre Channel technology over the last two decades
Fibre Channel has been doubling its speeds every three or four years since 1997, starting at 1GFC and progressing through 16GFC today
– The FC SAN interface is alive and well, with plans for 32GFC and faster speeds– The disk drive vendors are moving away from FC as an enterprise drive interface
Fibre Channel maintains backward compatibility with at least two previous generations
– 16GFC is backward compatible with 2GFC, 4GFC and 8GFC

The Need for 16Gb Fibre Channel
Increasing demands on storage systems and interfaces– More data: terabytes (TB) and petabytes (PB)– More virtual machines per physical server
• 8-10 used to be common, now 16, 20 or 25 are not uncommon
VMware vSphere 5.1– Support for 16GFC (in-box Emulex drivers), 64 vCPU, 1TB RAM in a VM
Windows Server 2012 and Hyper-V– Support for 16GFC (in-box Emulex drivers), 64 vCPU, 1TB RAM in a VM, Virtual
Fibre Channel
SSD Technology drives higher I/O workloads
New Servers– PCIe 3.0 servers introduced in 2012 provide faster bus speeds and more lanes
