Manufactured from the highest quality electropolished 2205 stainless steel All Arctic Steel water strainers are cast with 2205 stainless steel. This provides an exceptional level of corrosion
resistance. Additionally our strainers undergo an electro polishing process which removes contaminants from the
surface exposing the pure stainless steel, providing a rich chromium film, as is evident by the shine to our stainless
steel. This gives our already robust strainers a defence against corrosion superior to others on the market.

Features
1. Arcti c Steel water st rainers are cast in 2205 stainless steel and electro pol ished exposing the richchromium surface to further enhance cor rosion resista nce.
2. The robu st body is cast as one piece - no welds t o cor rode.
3. The extra st rength achieved in using 2205 stainless steel allows th e st rainers to be cast wit hthinner walls - translating to st ronger, light er we ight st rainers.
4. Optional solid lid or clear polycarbon ate lid .
5. The lid is fi xed wit h stainless stee l w ing nuts. No tools are required for removal allowing quick andeasy access, minimi sing maintenance t ime .
6. The wing nuts are on swing down eyebolts so nuts don 't need to be removed.
7. The offset outlet creates a swir ling act ion improv ing st raining capabil ities as t he ent ire surfacearea of th e basket is used.
8. The swir ling action also allows any air to be scavenged f rom the st rainer reducing th e possibility ofan air lock.
9. A full height basket means better straining and less f requent cleaning. Baskets have an open areain excess of 40%.
10. Basket options are:
a. ABS plastic with 3mm x 2mm hole (2500 microns/ US Mesh 7.5)b. 316 Stainle ss ste el with perfora ted 2mm hole (2000 microns/US Mesh 10)
11. All st rainers have an anode connect ion point allowing attachment to th e vessel's anode system, minimizing th e occurrence of galvanic corrosion.
12. Choosing st ainless ste el will often reduce th e mix of metals in your engine room.

2205 Stainless Steel – Advantages Traditionally aluminium bronzes have been well established with a good reputation for corrosion resistance in marine environments. However in more recent years metallurgists have developed superior metals known as Duplex stainless steels (2205), these are achieved by increased levels of chromium, nickel, molybdenum and nitrogen to levels higher than is present in ordinary marine grade 316. The result is a stainless steel that provides very good resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in a seawater environment, making 2205 stainless steel far superior to 316 and 316L. Benefits of 2205 stainless steel include: good weldability and workability, high resistance to fatigue corrosion, stress corrosion cracking (especially salt water stress corrosion cracking), erosion corrosion, and high-‐‑energy absorption. Other advantages are low thermal expansion and contraction, high strength, good resistance to sulphide stress corrosion, high resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. The properties of duplex stainless steels are the reason they are now heavily used in the offshore seawater market and why Arctic Steel casts all strainers using 2205 stainless steel. Other factors to consider:
• The density of 2205 stainless steel is slightly higher than that of bronze and is also significantly stronger, this allows finer details and smaller sections when casting, which often results in weight saving.
• Thermal and electrical conductivity of bronze is 2 to 3 times that of the 2205 stainless steel. The end
result is that bronze will carry a galvanic current far more efficiently than SS. Being a softer and less noble metal, bronze will therefore be subject to galvanic corrosion at an increased rate. This should be taken into account in any mixed metal seawater environment. Your anode system will usually be the only material softer than bronze in this environment, making connections critical.
• A marine engine room is dominated by steel and stainless steel components (e.g. engine block,
stainless propeller shaft). Ideally we strive to keep the mix of metals to a minimum, which avoids galvanic corrosion, this is why stainless steel seawater strainers are a better choice.
• Bronze corrodes at an increased rate compared to 2205 in polluted seawater where sulphides are
present. Unlike any other seawater strainer manufacturer in the world, ARCTIC STEEL has committed to manufacturing all cast stainless steel strainers with 2205 stainless steel. Arctic Steel strainers have a fully cast one-‐‑piece strainer body, eliminating the corrosion weaknesses inherent at welded joints. To further enhance our strainers, all bodies and lids are electro polished, which removes surface contaminants, providing even greater resistance to corrosion and a unique chromium rich shine to our strainers. Not only are the materials used, better than any other strainer in the World, the robust design and function of Arctic Steel strainers are second to none, providing commercial vessels with unrivalled performance and operational efficiency.

Comparison of Cast Bronze with Cast Duplex Stainless Steel
All metals deteriorate over time and will ultimately return to their mineral state, the speed of which is dependant
on the environment they are placed in and how well they are maintained .
Before any comparison is made it is important to explain that not all Bronze is of Naval Engineering
Standard (NES 747). This standard refers to heat treated, cast nickel aluminium bronze, which is the
preferred bronze for sea water conditions. Many bronze marine products on the market today are either
aluminium bronze or silicone bronze, these do not perform at the same level as the above. Cast bronze
can have many impurities which affect the ability to resist corrosion in a sea water environment.
Manufacturers of bronze marine fittings often neglect to clarify the type of bronze used. This should
always be checked as performance does vary.
Similarly, there are various stainless steels. The 300 series stainless steels are generally considered to
resist rust, however 304 is inadequate for marine applications, where 316 is the accepted marine grade
stainless steel. 316 shows good general resistance to corrosion and is widely used, however in certain
applications (specifically where there is no oxygen present) 316 will be susceptible to corrosion. To
increase resistance to corrosion a surface treatment such as electro polishing will provide extra
protection. Alternatively there are superior grades of stainless steel which offer almost twice the
resistance to corrosion that ordinary 316 or 316L offers. These include duplex stainless steel (2205),
super duplex SS (2507).
Research conducted in the UK comparing nickel aluminium bronze (NES 747) with various stainless
steels in an offshore sea water environment, revealed some interesting findings.
A composite ranking for resistance to corrosion was established, positioning the NiAl bronze below the
duplex stainless steels and above 316 SS.
Given that most bronze fittings are made from less noble bronzes such as silicone bronze and aluminium
bronze, which are affected more severely by galvanic corrosion, the ranking of these becomes similar to
316 stainless steel.
Research also recommended that the bronze products not be used in polluted waters.
The use of duplex and super duplex stainless steels in the marine environment is recommended as these
metals with higher levels of molybdenum and chromium, apart from being far stronger than bronze,
provide superior resistance to intergranular, pitting, crevice, galvanic and chloride stress corrosion.

Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel - Corrosion & Tea Staining
Duplex 2205 Stainless steel derives it’s
superior resistance to corrosion primarily due to the addition of chromium, molybdenum and nickel, which improves resistance to all types of corrosion and is better than bronze.
2205 stainless steel will naturally form a chromium oxide film on it’s surface. This is what makes it rust and stain resistant. However if the surface is contaminated with other metals, grease or marine growth then the film cannot replenish.
The most efficient way to further improve the resistance to corrosion is to treat the surface. All Arctic Steel™
water strainers have a surface treatment called electro polishing. This electrically charged acid bath removes 20 - 30 micrometers from the surface, removing contaminants and leaving an even richer chromium film than occurs naturally on 2205. This is far more effective than passivation and mechanical polishing.
Three types of corrosion affect
strainers:
1. Galvanic Corrosion... occurs when different metals are in contact via salt water resulting in a micro electrical current. The softer of the two metals will be corroded. Arctic Steel
solution - anode connection point on all strainers.
2. Pitting Corrosion... caused by chlorides in salt water. Arctic Steel
solution - Duplex 2205 stainless steel with guaranteed quantities of chromium, molybdenum & nickel.
3. Crevice & Microbiological Corrosion... a bacterial film from marine growth will cause crevice and pitting corrosion. Arctic Steel solution - Electro polishing removes impurities and refines the surface leaving few places where micro organisms can attach.
Tea Staining
This is common and can occur on the surface of all stainless steels when contaminants are left uncleaned.
This is not an indication of poor quality stainless steel or corrosion. Simply poor maintenance, as can be seen in the picture, where tea staining has been cleaned and the stainless steel remains perfectly intact.
Recommended care for your Arctic Steel™ Strainer
Use a thread sealant when installing. This will seal the thread from leaks, prevent galling and thread corrosion.
Connect the strainer to your anode system via the anode connection point. This reduces the occurrence of galvanic corrosion.
Clean your strainer regularly. This allows the stainless steel to resist corrosion.
