Delroy Campus – Year 7 Transition Evening

The year has begun brilliantly starting with a fabulous swimming

carnival. Congratulations to all the students who attended and displayed

such good behaviour, one experienced staff member declaring it to be the “best carnival I have ever attended”. Well done

to Mr Dunlop for his superb organisation and to all the staff who diligently performed their duties. They went over and

above, with Mr Doug Gordon and the support band providing great entertainment and there were some amazing staff

moves on the “dance floor”!

As you will see from the reports, many great activities have been occurring at Delroy; combined high schools (CHS)

sporting competitions have begun, Mr Piper took a group of Agriculture students to the Canberra Show, we held a

successful welcome to new families BBQ and information session on the new requirements to be awarded an HSC

(minimum Band 8 in Year 9 NAPLAN), and Clontarf and Girls Academy have both hosted welcome to families BBQs.

Delroy: The Land of opportunity! Congratulations to Ngali Shaw for being selected for a 2017 Nanga Mai Award for Outstanding Achievement in

Year 8 – The students are busy learning about Pop Art and the artists

involved in this art movement. Normally, the students would be studying

Street Art, however, the school term’s assessment has been swapped due to

Miss Thompson (who will be relieving Mrs McConnell on maternity leave),

keen to revamp the existing Street Art program to a more exciting one. This means that each Year 8 student received a new

assessment sheet (different to the one in their assessment booklet) which they signed to indicate they received the new

assessment for Term 1 in Visual Arts. If you require another copy or you missed out on the assessment sheet, see

Mrs McConnell or Miss Sinclair for another.

So far, Year 8 have learned what Pop Art is and about artist Andy Warhol and his artworks. They have begun a Warhol

inspired Photoshop activity and are attempting a Roy Lichtenstein inspired grid drawing.

We can’t wait to see what these students produce throughout the term as they understand popular culture.

NOTE – Year 8 students are required to purchase a canvas (no smaller then A4) for their Pop Art inspired assessment

painting due at the end of the term. If you could please purchase a canvas (or several – they can do as many as they wish) and

bring it to school to hand to the teacher for later in the term, please do so asap.

SCIENCE NEWS…..

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome in starting on my new

endeavours at Dubbo College Delroy Campus. I am excited about the times ahead and

being part of a Science faculty that will develop a community of students, which will

understand the role that Science plays in their daily lives.

To start with here is a list of assessment tasks that are due in Term 1.

Year 7 is doing a crime scene investigation. This investigation uses scientific investigations to solve a crime. As they gather

the evidence students will find out who committed the crime!

Year 8 will be conducting a practical exam in class. This will be done to assess their ability to work scientifically performing

a first-hand investigation. The theme for the practical task will be chemical reactions.

Year 9 will also be conducting a practical exam in class. This task will be related to the topic Spheres of the Earth. Students

will be assessed on their ability to perform a first-hand investigation.

Year 10 is currently doing an open ended investigation at home. This task is designed to assess a student’s ability to conduct

their own scientific investigation at home. So far, students have been busy planning their tasks. Many students are looking to

their hobbies to help identify a hypothesis they will test. It is strongly advised that students should start their investigations

soon, as the data they will be collecting may take a while to collect and then analyse.

Upcoming Events

Year 9 and Year 10 science and engineering challenge, 28th March

VALID testing trials Years 9 and 10, 6th March - 31st March. This 50min test is to help

collect data for the November VALID test.

If there are any questions relating to any upcoming assessments and events in Science please do not hesitate to contact us.

Strive Class Scoop…..

The Strive class are well into this term’s learning, despite the class only being in operation for less than a month. In their

English studies, students have been exploring Shakespeare and what it would have been like to have been an audience

member at one of his plays at the Globe theatre. Students completed a ‘virtual tour’ of the Globe and wrote a diary entry

based upon their experience. We have begun looking more closely at the key themes of his work, with consideration of why

he is still as popular today as he was 400 years ago.

Our History focus for the term is on the Italian Renaissance, which makes links to not only the work being studied in

English, but also to our future work in Science. Students are currently exploring the daily life in the Renaissance, and in

groups are creating an ICT presentation that they will deliver to their peers next week.

In Maths, students have been studying Integers and Indices and should be set to begin their new topic, Algebra, next week.

Some of the photos accompanying this article show a practical exploration of positive and negative numbers and the

processes used when adding or subtracting numbers with different signs.

Students in Strive are also studying The Chemical World in their Science lessons. The other photos within this article show

students participating in an investigation of elements, compounds and mixtures.

The students have begun their class project and are catering afternoon tea (once a fortnight) for Homework Centre on

Wednesday afternoons. This project has been very well received by the students, and is made possible with the continued

support of Delroy Park Woolworths who donate the grocery items for this activity.

In an effort to build students’ skills and consolidate the learning taking place in the classroom, students are provided with

regular Maths and Initiative Games homework. Other subject homework is provided when required, and is usually the

completion of any unfinished class work. Students are encouraged to make use of the Homework Centre to complete these

tasks.

Canberra Show Report 2017 On the 23rd of February twenty two students from Delroy travelled to Canberra to

show sheep at the Royal Canberra Show until Sunday the 26th. The trip down only

had a slight hiccup with a blown out trailer tyre. Some of the students were on their

second trip to Canberra whilst for many students it was their first time to the Nation’s

capital. Once again the students showed sheep from Mr Piper’s Belowrie White

Dorper stud. Outstanding results were achieved, taking out every class they were

entered in, culminating in taking out Champion and Reserve White Dorper ram and

ewe. Placings were also gained in the interbreed section against some strong

competition. Most students competed in their handlers and junior judging classes

and despite some nerves they all performed very well. Whilst in Canberra, the

students also enjoyed the views from Telstra Tower, toured around Parliament House

and enjoyed time at the Canberra Show, going on rides and seeing the fireworks, as

well as all the other associated features that come with a show of this magnitude.

Overall, the trip was highly successful and Mr Piper received excellent feedback from

other exhibitors about how well behaved and helpful the Delroy students were. This

is always pleasing feedback when it comes from members of the public and Mr Piper

would also like to personally congratulate the students on their efforts, the

parents for their help and finally Miss Smith and Mr Kelly for their excellent

assistance. Practice will commence in early Term 2 for the upcoming Dubbo

Show which is around Week 5 of Term 2.
