Robust Bench TestingYour oil & gas equipment can put heavy-duty engine oils to the test every day with extreme operating conditions, extended oil service intervals and high loads. Delo goes further to prove its value across your diesel equipment. In the Caterpillar Micro-Oxidation Test (CMOT) conducted by Southwest Research Institute, an oil’s ability to resist high-temperature oxidation that may contribute to piston deposits is measured. Delo’s performance was superior at resisting oxidation in the CMOT test compared to leading full-synthetic engine oils.

Delo® Rivals Synthetic Performance.HEAD-TO-HEAD FIELD PERFORMANCE COMPARISON IN FRACKING ENGINES

Not only has Delo 400 been compared to full synthetics in bench testing, its performance has also been compared in real world oil & gas fracking unit operation versus a leading full-synthetic heavy-duty engine oil. In Cummins QSK 50 engines in fracking operations, Delo 400 LE SAE 15W-40 and Mobil Delvac 1 ESP SAE 5W-40 were compared on oil drain and engine parts protection performance over a full two-year period at extended oil drain intervals. The engines were run in the same operating conditions in the Northeastern United States.

Drain intervals were extended from 300 hours to 600* hours for these engines and the used oil analysis was recorded below for viscosity, TBN performance, and wear results. As shown in the used oil analysis charts, Delo 400 LE SAE 15W-40 compared very favorably to Mobil Delvac 1 ESP SAE 5W-40 at extended drain intervals.

ALTERNATIVE FUEL CAPABILITY

Providing customers the protection for their engines whether running diesel or dual fuel (diesel and natural gas) is critical in today’s competitive environment.

How Do Dual Fuel Engines Work?A dual fuel engine is based on a traditional diesel engine, with the addition of dual fuel-specific hardware. Cummins, Caterpillar, and MTU all have hardware designed for their engines to utilize dual fuel in oil & gas applications.

When a diesel engine is operating in dual fuel mode, natural gas is introduced into the intake system. The air-to-natural gas mixture from the intake is drawn into the cylinder, but with a leaner air-to-fuel ratio. Near the end of the compression stroke, diesel fuel is injected and ignites, which causes the natural gas to burn. A dual fuel engine can operate on either 100 percent diesel fuel or the substitution mixture of diesel and natural gas (typically no lower diesel concentration than 30 percent diesel with 70 percent natural gas), but it CANNOT operate on 100% natural gas.

Universal Well is a well-recognized fracking and well-servicing company that supports oil & gas customers operating in the Marcellus Shale.Universal Well operates a large fleet of fracking and well-servicing vehicles and equipment. Uptime and reliability are critical to their operation and customers, including not only Chevron’s Upstream Production Operations, but also other large oil & gas production companies.

Looking to extend their oil drains on their large fracking engines, Universal Well was interested in developing a program to help double their oil-drain hours. Initially they believed this could only be achieved using a synthetic heavy-duty engine oil, but when the Chevron Lubricants team provided proof of performance on Delo 400 LE with ISOSYN® Technology against full-synthetic engine oils. Universal Well agreed to field test our product.

Initial drains started at 300 hours, per the engine OEM recommendations. After eight months of used-oil analysis that showed the oil’s excellent wear protection on 20 test engines, Universal Well and Chevron agreed to increase the drain intervals to 450 hours. This process was repeated at the 450-hour and 600-hour* oil-drain intervals before the final data was presented to the OEM for approval.

One of the engines was then torn down after 10,000+ hours of operation to show parts protection performance. After inspection of the parts, Universal Well, the OEM dealer and Chevron were very pleased with the condition of the parts from using Delo 400 LE with ISOSYN Technology. As a result, Universal Well switched their fleet to Delo 400 LE SAE 15W-40.
