OverviewThis document provides installation steps, usage guidelines and support information for running the Dell™ OpenManage™ Systems Management suite on VMware® ESX® software for Dell PowerEdge™ systems.

NOTE: For information on systems management architecture for VMware ESX 3i

software on Dell PowerEdge systems and for detailed steps to install and configure

the system and tools to manage the system, see the VMware ESX 3i Server on Dell PowerEdge Servers Systems Management Guide on the Dell Support website

at support.dell.com.

Installing VMware ESX You can install the VMware ESX software on a PowerEdge system using the Dell Systems Build and Update Utility. The Dell Systems Build and Update Utility media is available as a bootable media that ships with Dell PowerEdge systems. Unlike other operating systems installation, no additional drivers are required to be installed during the VMware ESX software installation. The VMware ESX installation media has all the latest required drivers.

NOTICE: During the VMware ESX software installation if you select the automatic

partitioning scheme, it deletes all existing partitions including the Dell Utility

partition. You need to perform manual partitioning to preserve the Utility partition.

To install the VMware ESX software using the Dell Systems Build and Update Utility media, perform the following steps:

1 Boot the system using the latest supported Dell Systems Build and Update Utility media.

2 Configure the required RAID level.
