Starting the CDStarting the CD

Starting the LiveCD – Boot Screen

Burn the ISO to a blank disc and set the server to boot from it.

You will be presented with the following screen – type “live” to start the CD

If you have attempted this and receive video issues, try “xforcevesa” instead of “live”

Starting the LiveCD ‐ Login

You will eventually receive a login prompt

The username is “root” and password “dell”

Starting the LiveCD – Terminal

If you have logged in succesfully, you will receive the following text.

Your current IP address will be displayed as above, if you do not have DHCP on your network use the following command (change IP address and netmask to suit).

Note the IP address as this may be needed later

ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up

Starting the LiveCD – Starting the GUI

Most commands are available from the terminal, however if you need access the GUI type “startx” at the terminal.You will eventually receive a screen as below

“Terminal” will display a terminal screen as you saw after login“Partition Editor” is used for resizing partitions“Firefox” can be used to open OMSAFirefox can be used to open OMSA“diagnostics” folder contains diagnostics scripts and results“OMSA” loads Dell Server Administrator“UNTITLED” shows a USB disk mounted currently

Remote Access – IP AddressTo obtain remote access you will need to know your IP address.

This is displayed at the first boot screen at login, or by typing “ ifconfig”

If you do not have DHCP on your network you can set this by using the command

ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up

Remote Access – Terminal access through TelnetIf you just wish to perform command based diagnostics, a telnet server has been provided.

No configuration is required, you only need a telnet client

“Putty” is the most commonly used application and is available for free

You only need to enter the IP address and login using “root” and “dell”

Remote Access – Remote Access to the GUIIf you need access to the GUI, a VNC server has been supplied for remote access.

No configuration is required, use “TightVNC” for accessing this.

Note that there is no need to use this for accessing OMSA – this can be done through https://ipaddress:1311

Remote Access – Built in sharesBy default, the LiveCD has two methods of transferring files to and from Linux.

Username “root” and password “dell” are used to access these.

SMB ShareThere is a Windows share built in no configuration is requiredThere is a Windows share built in, no configuration is requiredAccess this from \\ipaddress

FTP ShareThere is an FTP server built in, no configuration is required.

“Filezilla” is recommended software for accessing this share.

All that is needed is to enter the IP address and username/password in the prompt below

Remote Access – Built in shares (cont)If you have a non booting system you can obtain access to the HDDs easily through the remote SMB or FTP sharesIf you have a non‐booting system, you can obtain access to the HDDs easily through the remote SMB or FTP shares.

Windows shares and USB drives are automatically mounted when in the GUI or in the /media folder after mounting through this method.

After you have mounted the Windows drive through the menu above, you can browse using SMB or FTP (see previous slide)

The quickest way to run a test on the HDDs is to use the supplied scripts in the /root folder

Open a terminal and type the following commands

cd /root./sas.sh or ./scsi.sh

Alternatively you can open the scripts provided (see page 14) and click “Run in Terminal”y y p p p p g

The results of this test will be output to /root/results/result.txt and a RAID controller log will be stored in /var/log/TTY*******

The report will be saved as a ZIP in the diagnostics ‐> results folder on the desktop

You can also use the command clearesm to clear the hardware logs if needed.

Known issues :

If you have no IP address, firefox starts in “Offline Mode” – Click File and deselect “Work Offline”.

You receive a “Invalid Security Certificate” error – Click “add an exception” on the same screen, then “Get certificate”

To run this, open a terminal and type the following commands

You will be asked for the root password – which is “dell”

You can load this using the GParted icon on the desktop
