Wrenthorpe Community Orchard – Update

It was a beautiful morning for planting our six new apple trees at Beck side, three eager young students from Jerry Clay Academy ably assisted by Councillors David Dews and Martyn Johnson carried out the planting. Beck Side is the second site for Wrenthorpe Community Orchard and the group greatly appreciates the support of the Neighbourhood Improvement Fund in enabling the completion of this particular project.

The six varieties of apple trees are depicted in the photographs below and at the present time they are still available to sponsor. For a donation of £35 or more one of these trees could be chosen by you to have a plaque dedicated to a special event or person in your life. The picnic is primarily aimed at children under 5 so please come along with your toddler, teddy and a picnic. Teas and fruit juice will be available. The big event of the year is our Community Apple Day on Sunday 9 October in Wrenthorpe Village Hall. Jerry Clay Academy school choir will be performing a few songs and we are hoping to have even more activities for the children to enjoy this year. Full details will be published later in the year.

Grow Your Own in MayYou won’t know where to start with all the exciting things you can be doing on your plot

this month so here’s a small selection of ideas!

Loads of seeds can be sown now both in and out. Here’s the lowdown. Directly outdoors: sprouts, caulis, cabbages, both broccolis, peas, roots, salad, sweetcorn (but pop a cloche over

these seeds to protect them from slugs). Indoors: French and runner beans (if it’s still cold, otherwise outdoors but protect from frost with fleece), squashes, chillies and peppers.

If you’ve already sown leeks, indoor or out, you can now transplant them to their final positions if they’re pencil thick. Prepare a watering can full of water mixed with manure. Then, make a deep hole with a dibber, drop your baby leek in and top up with the manurey water. Don’t fill the hole

with soil. This feed gives your leeks a brilliant head start and the deep hole ensures that you get a nice long white shaft.

You can plant your main crop potatoes this month. Last year I trialled Bob Flowerdew’s tip of lining my potato trenches with grass clippings and can report that I had an enormous bumper crop that was the envy of my neighbours (and that doesn’t happen often!) I’ll definitely be f

ollowing that advice again this year although I have foolishly weeded and feeded my own lawn so will be begging clippings from friends.

At the time of planting, or as they start to develop, you can make a really effective but also attractive support for your peas by using pruned raspberry canes stuck into the ground either side

of your row of peas at 45 degree angles.

Now, on to pests in the form of slugs - they can be a real menace to all your newly emerging seedlings. In my arsenal this year I’ve got a small (tiny) pond I made last year by sinking half a

barrel into a hole. I hoped frogs would just naturally navigate their way over but no joy. However, a friend with a successful pond full of frog spawn has offered to rehouse some of his my way. Fingers crossed that take to their new home and eat their way through my large population of slugs. If not it

will be back to the usual methods of beer traps, picking off and killing or relocating, and pellets.

at Newton Bar. We meet at 9.15 for a 9.30 start.The walks are approximately 4 miles long and are aimed at fitter walkers.
