IN BRIEF

Beg, borrow or steal: IAF chief’s advice to defence scientists

New Delhi, Oct 19 (IANS) “Beg, borrow or steal”, was the advice the Indian Air Force (IAF) chief, Air Chief Norman Anil Kumar Browne, had for defence scientists Wednes-day for developing critical technolo-gies for the armed forces.

Browne, who was delivering a lecture at an aerospace seminar or-ganised by the Institute of Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA) here, was attempting to impress upon the defence scientists the need to devel-op an engine for indigenous fighter aircraft that has not happened for

almost three decades.“You may have to beg, borrow or

steal. But you have to do it,” Browne said to stress that there was an ur-gency in locally developing the in-digenous aero engine if India has to strengthen it defence capabilities.

India had tasked its Defence Re-search and Development Organisa-tion (DRDO) 22 years ago to devel-op an indigenous engine and till date has sanctioned a budget of Rs.2,893 crore (over $500 million) for its de-velopment.

New Delhi, Oct 19 (IANS) In a ma-jor goof up, the Indian Army’s for-ward bases in sensitive Jammu and Kashmir and northeastern states such as Arunachal Pradesh were posted online by the air force in a tender it issued, sending shockwaves down the defence ministry.

Incidentally, the tender for hiring of helicopters from private airlines and public sector undertakings it-

self was unusual for the Indian Air Force (IAF), particularly to meet its operational needs in sensitive border areas. But it has been forced to do so due to acute shortages in its fleet and the low levels of the transport fleet’s availability. The goof up was noticed Wednesday, though the tender has been online for at least a week now, sources said here.

If PM decides, Telangana state likely by New Year: Advani

Now you can track a moving trainNew Delhi, Oct 19 (IANS) If you are concerned about the safety of your family or friend travelling in a train, a GPS-based train tracking system launched by Indian Railways will make it possible at the click of a mouse. The Real Time Informa-tion System of the Indian system will help monitor train schedules. In order to overcome limitations of the existing Train Running Informa-tion System, the Lucknow-based Research Design and Standards Organization of the railways and the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, have jointly developed a GPS-based train tracking system.

A nostalgia trip for Nepal PM in IndiaNew Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS) It will be a time for nostalgia and camaraderie when Nepal’s Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai today meets his old college mates from Jawaharlal Nehru University, long-time friends like Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar as well as Swami Agnivesh who performed his marriage ceremony in the 1980s. Bhattarai’s four-day visit to India kicks off with a recep-tion this evening that will bring together his batchmates from JNU from the early 1980s, civil society figures, Gandhian activists and intellectuals.

Hyderabad, Oct 19 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Wednesday said if Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Pro-gressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi take a decision, carv-ing out a separate Telangana state out of Andhra Pradesh could become a reality by the New Year. Addressing a public meeting here as part of his ‘Jana Chetna Yatra’, he said if the UPA gov-ernment brought a bill in the winter session of parliament for the creation of Telangana state, the BJP would sup-port it.

If the prime minister and Gandhi decide to create the Telangana state, the BJP, which has 116 members in the

Lok Sabha and 50 in the Rajya Sabha, will support them. “Then there is no reason why Telangana state can’t be a reality on Jan 1, 2012,” he said.

Meanwhile, on his way back from a summit in South Africa, Prime Minis-ter Manmohan Singh Wednesday said there was no question of any govern-ment inaction on the Telangana issue and while a solution was not impossi-ble there were no quick answers either.

“There is no inaction. Efforts are being made to find a solution that will bring about a broad based consensus among all the various stakeholders,” the prime minister told journalists onboard his special aircraft, Air India One.

Ralegan Siddhi (Maharashtra), Oct 19 (IANS) Anna Haz-are Wednesday lauded the stand taken by Ralegan Siddhi sar-panch (village head) against meeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after the fracas in New Delhi the day before.

In a statement here late in the evening, Hazare also clari-fied that two months ago, Congress MP from Kerala P.T. Thomas had expressed keen interest in the Gandhi scion visiting Ralegan Siddhi and to know more about the develop-ment projects undertaken by the village. Sarpanch Jaisingh Mapare and Hazare’s personal secretary Suresh Pathare had gone to meet Gandhi Tuesday, but were not allowed to meet him. Later, Thomas apologised for the incident.

Shillong, Oct 19 (IANS) Joint Intelligence Com-mittee Chief Ajit Lal Wednesday said the Maoists have have made inroads in the strife-torn north-eastern region but there is no evidence of linkages between them and the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).

“There is no evidence of linkages between the CPI-Maoists and the ULFA, but there are evi-dence of their linkages with the People’s Liberation Army (a Manipur-based secessionist rebel group) and the Upper Assam Leading Committee of CPI (Maoist),” Lal said.

High security for Jayalalithaa’s court appearance Today

Bangalore, Oct 20 (IANS) The city’s central jail will turn into a fortress to-day, not because former Karnataka chief min-ister B.S. Yeddyurappa is lodged there, but to facilitate Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jay-alalithaa’s appearance in a court in the complex. Around 1,000 police personnel, headed by a joint commissioner of police, will be on duty around the jail complex in the eastern suburb of Parappana Agra-hara where a Bangalore court will hold a special sitting to re-cord Jayalalithaa’s statement in a cor-

ruption case against her.“We have imposed prohibitory or-

ders banning assembly of five or more persons in a 500 metre radius of the jail complex from late Wednesday till the Tamil Nadu chief min-ister leaves for Chennai Thursday,” a Bangalore city police spokesperson told IANS.

Jayalalithaa is to give her statement in the over a decade-old case in which she is charged with amassing Rs.66 crore between 1991 and

1996 when she was chief minister of Tamil Nadu.

Occupy Wall Street protestsa warning: PM

On Board Air India One, Oct 19 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday said there were rea-sons behind the protests in Wall Street and Europe, which were spilling into India, adding these were also warn-ings for those in-charge of governance at various levels.

“There are reasons why people are protesting. People are protesting in Wall Street, in Europe, about the fat salaries bankers are getting when peo-ple are being asked to tighten their belts,” said the prime minister.

“There is the problem of grow-ing unemployment in the US. There is worry in Europe also. So, these are problems, which the system must have credible answers to take them on board,” he told journalists on board his

Cash-for-votes scam: Order on Amar Singh's bail reserved

New Delhi, Oct 19 (IANS): The Del-hi Police Wednesday did not oppose the interim and regular bail applica-tions of ailing Rajya Sabha member and former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, charged in the 2008 cash-for-votes scandal in parlia-ment, and the Delhi High Court re-served its order on the pleas till Oct 24.

"The orders on the bail applica-tions are reserved. Come on Monday for the order," Justice Suresh Kait said.

The ruling came after police sub-mitted before the court that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where Amar Singh is ad-mitted, said in its report that the MP's condition was critical and he needed constant monitoring.

"We cannot dispute the medical report of AIIMS," said Delhi Police counsel, adding that Amar Singh had recorded his statement in the case so keeping in mind his medical condition they did not require his further custody.

Attacks aimed at diverting attention from Jan Lokpal

bill: Kejriwal Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), Oct 19 (IANS): Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal said here Wednesday that the attacks on the socical activist and his associates were aimed at diverting attention from the core issue of the Jan Lokpal bill.

He was referring not merely to a slipper thrown at him by a Congress party worker in Lucknow Tuesday, but also to the criticism by certain po-

litical leaders, particularly Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh.

Addressing a press conference here, Kejriwal said: "The game of these pol-iticians is to divert our attention from the real issue of Jan Lokpal Bill and we are not going to allow that; we are only focused on ensuring that the Jan Lokpal Bill is introduced and passed during the coming winter session of parliament."

Railway minister hints at fare hike

New Delhi, Oct 19 (IANS): Hint-ing at a possible revision of passen-ger fares, Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi Wednesday said the railways are working out a way to meet their financial constraints and social obli-gations. The minister suggested dy-namic pricing to charge those who can afford to pay while protecting the bulk of the passengers who belong to the lower strata of society.

"We need intelligent thinking on the issue, and we are applying our mind on all possible options," Trivedi said at the economic editor's confer-ence here.

Yeddyurappa getting five-star treatment: Congress

New Delhi, Oct 19 (IANS): Arrested former Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa was being given "five-star treatment while in jail", the Congress said Wednesday. "BJP's (Bharatiya Janata Party's) handling of Yeddyurappa's jail and hospital hop-ping is hypocritical. I want to ask why the state authorities are giving him a preferential treatment in jail," Con-gress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said.

Yeddyurappa was discharged from a hospital in Bangalore Wednesday and was re-admitted to the jail af-ter senior party leader L.K. Advani, proceeding with his Jan Chetna cam-paign, said corruption by partymen was weakening the BJP. Yeddyurappa was Saturday sent to judicial custody till Oct 22 after his bail was rejected by a special Lokayukta court in con-nection with illegal land denotifica-tion cases.

During the searches, sources in know of the operations of the NIA said the team found three mobile phones at the behest of Wasim, a student of unani medicine in Bangladesh. He was arrested Oct 7.

NIA that has been investi-gating the case since Sep 8, a day after the blasts took place in the premises of Delhi High Court in which 13 people were killed. Paris, Oct 20 (IANS/RIA Novo-sti) French President Nicolas Sarkozy has become a father for the fourth time after his wife Carla Bruni gave birth to a baby girl on Wednesday, a media report said.

"According to our information, at around 8.00 p.m. Carla Bruni-Sarkozy gave birth to a daughter," a BFM TV correspondent report-ed near the Muette Clinic in Paris.

Neither the president's office nor the clinic has confirmed the report.

President Sarkozy arrived at the hospital earlier in the day to sup-port his wife, a singer and former supermodel, but later had to leave for Frankfurt for talks with Ger-man Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Nicolas Sarkozy, 56, has three sons, Pierre, 26, and Jean, 24, from his first marriage to Marie-Dominique Culioli, and Louis, 14, with his second wife, Cecilia Ciganer-Albeniz.

Bruni, 43, is already a mother to a 10-year-old boy, Aurelien. His father was her ex-lover, the Paris philosopher Raphael Enthoven.

Technology that helps see through wallsWashington, Oct 19 (IANS) Peering through thick walls is no longer science fiction but stark reality, thanks to a new cutting edge technology developed by scientists. MIT's Lincoln Lab researchers Gregory Charvat and John Peabody have built a system that can see through walls from some distance away, giving an instantaneous picture of the activity on the other side.Their device is an unassuming array of antenna arranged in two rows - eight receiving elements on top, 13 transmitting ones below - and some computing equipment, all mounted onto a movable cart.

US to hold Nuclear talks with PyongyangWashington, Oct 20 (IANS) The US will hold talks with North Korea in Geneva next week over its nuclear programme, Xinhua reported on Wednesday. "This is a continuation of the exploratory meetings to determine if North Korea is prepared to fulfill its commitments under the 2005 joint statement of the six-party talks and its international obli-gations, as well as take concrete steps toward denuclearization," the State Department spokes-man Mark Toner said. The talks are scheduled for Oct 24-25.

US release Headley terrorist interrogation tapes

Washington, Oct 20 (IANS) US federal prosecutors have released interrogation tapes of admitted Pakistani-American terrorist Da-vid Headley, who helped plot the November 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, after a Chicago judge's order.

Headley, son of a Pakistani dip-lomat and an American mother, who changed his given name of Daood Gilani to scout targets in Mumbai without arousing suspi-cion, is heard speaking publicly for the first time in the just released clips, ABC News reported.

Wednesday's release of the Fed-eral Bureau of Investigation (FBI) tape came after a not for profit in-vestigative journalism group, Pro-

Publica, filed a court motion along with the PBS show Frontline.

The government argued that Headley's family would be endan-gered if the video was released. Headley is heard on the tape say-ing: "I want some, I mean would like, I know it doesn't matter what I want, but I'd like, from my eyes, I want some kind of bust to happen.

"I don't want to keep on & I mean I know you have plenty of evidence against me but really I'm just providing you more and more evidence against me and you aren't making any arrests."

During questioning, Headley was told that he had to tell authori-ties everything he knew and that any plea bargain would be based

on the importance and quality of the information, ABC said.

That is when Headley made a motion to suggest a plea deal to avoid the death penalty and then decided to turn on his boyhood friend, Pakistan born Canadian Tahawwur Rana, who provided Headley the cover of his Chicago based immigration business.

Headley would go on to get his plea deal in exchange for testifying against Rana, who was cleared in June of his role in the 26/11 Mum-bai attacks but convicted of pro-viding material help to Pakistan based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Tai-ba (LeT) for a foiled plot to attack a Danish newspaper.

Prince William world's most influential man: Poll

London, Oct 20 (IANS) Britain's Prince William has been named the world's most influential man, beat-ing US President Barack Obama and late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in a poll.

The 29-year-old Duke of Cambridge also came ahead of David Cameron, who was last in the list, and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Daily Express reported on Wednesday.

"This was the year our readers believe Prince Wil-liam finally came of age, making the Royal Family accessible and cool, in a way that the previous generation failed," Express said quoting Drew Lubega, UK editor of lifestyle site AskMen.com, who commissioned the survey. "He's a hard worker determined to use his global profile for good causes."

French DJ David Guetta came second in the list of Top 49 Most Influential Men. Footballer Cris-

tiano Ronaldo was third, journal-ist Piers Morgan was fourth, and Obama was 10th in a poll of 7,200 men aged 18-40, according to the newspaper.

Kayani warns US against anti-Pakistan offensive Islamabad, Oct 19 (IANS) Amid escalating tensions, Pakistan's all powerful army chief, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, has warned the US not to launch any military offensive into his country's tribal region.

Asking the US to "think 10 times" before moving into North Waziristan region from Afghanistan, Kayani re-minded the Americans that Pakistan was a nuclear power and should not be compared with Iraq or Afghani-stan.

The army chief, who has been smarting since US commandos in-truded into Pakistan and killed

Osama bin Laden in a Pakistani town in May, was addressing members of parliament's defense committee on Tuesday.

But Kayani did not specify what Pakistan would do if American troops, now massed on the Afghan side of the border, did move into North Waziristan hunting for the militant Haqqani network.

US officials are linking the Haqqa-ni group with Pakistani's intelligence agencies and say it has stepped up attacks on American interests in Af-ghanistan, with some tacit Pakistani backing.

3 tonne satellite to fall on earth

London, Oct 19 (IANS) The three tonne ROSAT satellite will fall to earth this week, at any time after Fri-day, the German Aerospace Agency DLR says.

The X-ray satellite will re-enter between Oct 21 and 24, its scientists predict, and could strike anywhere on Earth between 53 degrees north and 53 degrees south - including in the US and Britain. The agency cal-culates that there is a one in 2,000 chance that it might hit someone, the Daily Mail reported.

Fragments - including pieces of a heat-resistant mirror weighing 400 kg - could hit anywhere within an 50 mile-wide path along the satellite's track.

Thirty "individual pieces weigh-ing a total of 1.6 tonnes may reach the surface of the Earth", the German Aerospace Centre has warned.

ROSAT's heat-resistant mirror in particular may not burn up upon re-entry and falling debris may include razor-sharp shards.

Heiner Klinkrad of the European Space Agency says: "Until now in the more than 50-years of space history not a single person has been harmed (by pieces of falling satellites)."

US India travel alert based on Indian threat reportsWashington, Oct 20 (IANS) The US says its latest India travel alert is based on recent Indian government advisories and local media reports indicating terrorist attacks possibly being planned during the current holiday season.

On Board Air India One, Oct 19 (IANS): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday exuded confidence on 8-8.5 per-cent growth for India despite the difficult global situation and said a 9 percent target for the next Five Year Plan was also reachable. "We have to ensure the ill-winds from abroad do not affect the growth processes in our country adversely," the prime minister told journalists on the way back from Tues-

day's India-Brazil-South Africa Summit in Pretoria. "For that it is very essential we maintain the tempo of investment, par-ticularly investment in the in-frastructure sector, investment in agriculture, investment in energy saving technologies," he said. The prime minister said India needed to "walk on several legs" to beat chronic poverty, ig-norance and disease, for which it was important to ensure econ-omy grows fast enough.

New York, Oct 20 (IANS): US stocks extended losses Wednesday after the Federal Reserve said the economy was losing steam across much of the nation, Xinhua reported. The sell-off came after the release of Fed’s so-called Beige Book, which is a sum-mary of outlooks from the 12 dis-trict banks from across the country, showing business conditions became weaker in most areas of the nation. “Many districts described the pace of growth as ‘modest’ or ‘slight’ and contacts generally noted weaker or less certain outlooks for business

conditions,” said the report.Adding to the negative note,

Moody’s Investors Service down-graded Spain’s credit rating by two notches from As2 to A1 late Tues-day with a negative outlook, warn-ing more downgrade risks in the future. The technology sector was heavily weighed in most of the session after Apple Inc. unveiled a worse-than-expected earnings report, dragging the tech-heavy Nasdaq down over 2 percent. Among other companies reporting earn-

ings Wednesday, Morgan Stanley was little changed after the bank posted a third quarter earnings of $2.15 billion Wednesday, revers-ing a loss of $91 million in the same period last year. As of Wednesday’s close, the Dow Jones industrial aver-age lost 72.43 points, or 0.63 percent, to 11,504.62. The Standard & Poor’s

Washington, Oct 19 (IANS) The Indian rupee, the Brazilian real, the Chinese renminbi, the Russian ruble and the South African rand have been identified in an International Monetary Fund (IMF) discussion paper as the key emerg-ing market (EM) currencies with potential for internationalization. All these economies have significant regional importance and economic weight, noted the IMF Staff Discussion Notes on “Internationalization of Emerging Mar-ket Currencies: A Balance between Risks and Rewards” released here Wednesday. Despite severe data limitations, there is evidence that the use of these EM currencies in international transactions has increased markedly in the past few years, the paper said noting that use in for-eign exchange derivatives doubled for the rupee and the ruble and increased about twelve-fold for the renminbi and by 50 percent for the real. Having a large share of commodities in trade flows may present headwinds to currency inter-nationalization in India, Brazil, and Russia, the paper said.

Kolkata, Oct 19 (IANS): The West Bengal government Wednesday said it will approve a relief undertaking sought by tyre maker Dunlop India Limited (DIL) only after the manage-ment reopens its Sahaganj factory in Hooghly district and takes measures to run the plant. The company has alleged anti-social activities and vandalism by a section of workers, exorbitant conversion costs, and hefty increase in raw material prices without corresponding increase in tyre prices, continuous losses and cash crunch for its inability to run the factory. It has demanded for benefit of relief under-taking from the state government.

Under the settle-ment, Citigroup was required to pay $160 million in disgorgement plus $30 million in pre-judgment interest and a $95-million penalty for a total of $285 million that would be returned to investors, the SEC said.

The package, named Connecting Europe Facility (CCF), will be aimed at constructing sustainable and fully interconnected transport, energy and digital net-works, Xinhua reported. “I want to be absolutely clear that an essential part of our approach is to put in place the conditions for growth and job crea-tion,” said European Commission President José Manuel Barroso. “We are frontloading growth so that we

Waste Disposal in IndiaThe stench and ugly sight of garbage dumped on the roadside, some-times overflowing from drains or floating on the surface of rivers, is not at all uncommon in India. It is disgusting, until you get used to it and begin to ignore it.

Where Does Your Garbage Go?

India’s garbage generation stands at 0.2 to 0.6 kilograms of garbage per head per day. Also, it is a well known fact that land in India is scarce. The garbage collector who comes to your house every morn-ing to empty your dustbins inside his truck, takes all the garbage from your neighborhood and dumps it on an abandoned piece of land.

Why is Waste a Problem?

As already mentioned, waste disposal in India simply involves rounding up the waste from different parts of the city, and dumping everything in a landfill. Once a landfill is completely occupied, a new landfill is discovered in a different part of the city. The Energy Research Institute estimates that 1400 sq. km. of land would be re-quired by 2047 for municipal waste!

Cities those are fortunate enough to have a river passing through them, have an additional dump for all their garbage. The state of the Yamuna River in Delhi is a testimony to this fact. The river practically doesn’t flow at all. Expansive white deposits can be seen on their surfaces that prevent

the flow. The deposits are nothing but toxic wastes that have reacted with the water. Practically no living crea-ture lives in this section of the river.

The landfill method is simply one that creates land pollution (and in some cases, ground water contami-nation). The waste is not subjected to recycling, composting, or any other form of environmental treatment. Hazardous toxic wastes lie side by side with the organic wastes in the landfill.

The waste disposal issue has been given a small budget by the Govern-ment. Limited by this, the munici-palities are ill-equipped to deal with the massive amounts of waste they

collect everyday. Another problem is their inefficiency in collecting the waste. Currently, their efficiency is only about 50 to 80 per cent. The common man living in a populated urban city can tell you that the gar-bage boy seems to take holidays every now and then. The real problem is that he has collected so much that he can’t store any more trash in his truck for the day, which is why he seems to take a “holiday” and does not come to your house. On the one hand, we can blame the municipality for not having enough resources to collect all the garbage. On the other hand, we ourselves are to blame for generating such huge amounts of garbage.

What Can be Done About it?

Firstly, it is imperative on the part of municipalities to separate the bio-degradable from non-biodegradable waste. Biodegradable wastes can then be subjected to composting, which is a process of converting plant and animal wastes to humus by soil mi-croorganisms. Humus enhances the fertility of soil.

Non-biodegradable wastes then further have to be categorized on the basis of their toxicity. Toxic wastes,

when dumped in the land, may eventually contaminate and poison ground water. They have to be stored in tightly sealed underground con-tainers.

Wastes like plastic, metal, paper etc can also be subjected to recycling. In some ways, the waste can actually serve as a resource!

Of course, all of the above requires a hike in the waste disposal budget. The municipalities need to be taught

the technologies described above so that they can deal with the waste ef-fectively.

As individuals, we need to real-ize that we do generate quite a lot of waste – we dispose of containers that can be reused and we throw away papers that can be recycled. It is im-portant to reduce our wastage of re-sources so that we don’t pressurize our weak waste disposal system.

Garbage collectors from all parts of the city meet there to do the same. Such a land is called a landfill.

India’s per capita waste genera-tion is so high, that it creates a crisis if the garbage collector doesn’t visit a neighborhood for a couple of days. Typically, each household waits for the garbage boy with two or three bags of trash. If he doesn’t turn up, the garbage becomes too much to store in the house. The household help or maid of the house will then be instructed to take the bags, walk a few yards away – probably towards the end of the lane – and dump the bags there. Seeing one household, all the others in the neighborhood immediately follow suit. This land, at the end of the lane, soon becomes

the neighborhood’s very own garbage dump – a convenient place to dump anything if the garbage boy doesn’t show up. Of course, when the quan-tity of the waste becomes too much to bear then diseases are feared, the resi-dents would march up to their colo-ny’s welfare association and demand for the waste to be cleaned up at once. The waste will then be picked up from there and dumped in another piece of land – this time further away from the colony – probably in a landfill.

People in India also litter exces-sively. The sweeper again sends all this garbage to the local dump, from where it finally goes to a landfill.

At the end of the day, it is safe to say that all garbage gets dumped in a cer-tain piece of land (called a landfill).

Gone With The WindBooks

Animal farm by George Orwell is a short story about what happens when a bunch of oppressed and ill-treated farm animals decide to rebel against the farm owner “Mr.Jones”. The animals attempt to rule the farm on their own aiming at creating a sce-nario where everyone would be treated as equals.

Through the course of the book you will recognize that the plot is not about horses and pigs, but is a reflection of real life inspired by events that oc-curred in the Soviet Union during the dictatorship of Joseph Stalin before World War II. Orwell, who intensely opposed tota l itar ianism, beautifully high-lights corruption, ignorance, greed and indifference in a manner that is engaging and thought provoking. Its satire, humor and subtlety make this a stimulating must read classic.

Gone With the Wind is a timeless American classic. This is one book that should not be judged by its cover, or even its size for that matter (1025 pages – regular paperback edition). The story has slavery, tragic romance, society norms, loyalty and most importantly feminism with the backdrop being the civil -war. The plot revolves around Scarlett O‘Hara, the spoilt and manipulative daughter of a plantation owner. Scarlett has very complex emotions and is at constant loggerheads with Rhett Butler who is madly in love with her. What happens next might be predictable, but the ending is anything but that. Pulitzer Prize winning Mitchell very subtly depicted the different races and cultures, and the differences especially between the ‘haves” and the “have nots”. It is worth the effort to read the book as well as watch the movie based on the story as they are both classics in their own right.

You have promises to keep, and miles to go before you sleep!

Either way, it’s time to make a decision!

Never ever curb the learning!

Just keep your eyes on the prize!

Don’t be hasty! Wait for it…

When people become excited, they some-times become a bit overly optimistic. When people become a bit overly optimistic, they make grand promises. When people make grand promises, it sometimes occurs to them that they now have to fulfill the obligation they have made and they wish they hadn’t been so quick to make a grand promise. Be careful what you promise today. Don’t let enthusiasm get the better of you.

March 21 - April 19Aries

They aren’t exactly hiding their feelings from you!

When people make conscious decisions to change something, they often tell others. We’ve all heard people declare proudly and loudly that they’re going to go on diets, quit smoking, whatever. When they do this, an instant form of ‘monitoring’ commences. These people know they’re being watched by others. Be aware that a change you plan to instigate will have people monitoring your progress in some way. If you’re happy with that, then proceed.

May 21 - June 20Gemini

Most people are better poker players than they give themselves credit for. We all mask our feelings and intentions at times, particu-larly when we want to disguise how we truly feel about something - or someone! Some-one’s feelings for you appear to run deeper than they’re letting on. Quite why they are choosing not to reveal them is something only they can answer but you probably won’t have to look very hard to indentify your mystery admirer.

Sept. 23 - Oct. 22Libra

Life, they say, is the sum of all our choices. The interesting thing about life is, it does allow us to make U-turns sometimes. You appear focused where an ambition close to your heart is concerned. This, as we spoke about yesterday, involves a creative skill you possess and you might need to backtrack slightly to pursue training or learning of some kind from someone who can help you. The sky wants to help and you’ll soon see evidence of this.

Oct. 23 - Nov. 21Scorpio

How much time and effort can you give toward something – or perhaps, someone? Are both justified? How reassured are you that what you’re getting in return warrants time and effort…ok, I’ll stop there. You seem stuck in a perpetual loop that is drain-ing your resources and patience. Before you consider throwing in the proverbial towel, wait and see what development takes place next that will do much to help point you in the right direction.

Nov. 22 - Dec. 21Sagittarius

When something is ‘right’, we know it’s ‘right’ because it feels ‘right’. The same applies when we know something is ‘wrong’. Sometimes, we ignore the ‘wrong’ feeling because we believe there must be some element of ‘right’ within it and, if we focused solely on that, we could turn a ‘wrong’ into a ‘right’. You know if an idea or plan should be pursued or not. If you can’t trust your judgment, then trust your conscience.

Maxi dresses are best kept simple which is why we suggest that you stay away from those that have ruffles, asymmetrical hems, bows or bells sleeves. These additions usually add oomph to an outfit but because maxi dresses are already quite dramatic on their own, they don’t need anything more than a simple pattern or print.

Watch the FitBecause maxi dresses are long and shapeless for the most part, they have to be fitted around the bust and maybe, the waist. The right fit, therefore, is essential because it will bring your entire look together!

Yes, that is the eternal question! We recommend printed maxi dresses because they look ador-able and the fabric will make you feel like you’re floating.

To Print or not to Print? It’s all about the Length

On Your Feet How to:Wear a Maxi Dress the Right Way

Long or maxi dresses have recently come back in style and anybody can pull them off as long as they keep a few crucial points in mind. And don’t worry; it’s not as complicated as it sounds!

The length says everything so make sure that the dress isn’t not too long - it should just about touch the heels of your feet.

A saving grace in this case is that your shoes won’t show when you walk but since they’ll peek out when you sit down, you might as well have a little fun with them but be comfortable at the same time! Most of us get stressed out about the tiniest of things and even though we don’t realize it, the tension can have an adverse effect on our health. The good news is that there is an easy solution to this problem and no, it doesn’t involve spending most

of your life at the spa! All you need to do is add certain foods to your diet when you’re feeling low or stressed and we can guarantee that you’ll feel the difference. Let’s check them out.

Chocolate

Spinach

Bananas Milk

WalnutsPopeye’s favorite vegetable probably doesn’t taste as good as a large chocolate bar but it does contain folic acid which ultimately has the same effect as your favorite sugary treat. Just like chocolate, it helps to release serotonin in the brain which turns one’s frown upside down almost immediately! So if you want to feel better without packing on the calories, spinach is definitely the way to go!

Your doctor may have suggested that you include walnuts in your daily diet to improve your health but you should also know that apart from boosting your immunity, these nuts will also boost your mood! This is because they contain uridine and fatty acid omega-3- both of which will help to stimulate the release of happy hormones in your brain and help you leave your worries behind. Imagine the euphoria you will experience if you combine chocolate and walnuts together!

This easily available beverage has had its share of critics over the years, however certain research shows that few other foods can compare to this rich source of vitamins and minerals. This creamy liquid contains tryptophan which is yet another stress relieving compound, so if you want to keep that nervous tension at bay, start your day with a cuppa!

Happy Is As Happy Eats! A look at Foods that Help Lift Your Spirits

Aanchal Ghai ([email protected])

We probably don’t even need to convince you to have chocolate, right? Even so, you should know that most chocolaty treats contain certain compounds that are said to heighten your sense of euphoria, which is why dark chocolate is referred to as an aphrodisiac. Additionally, it also contains caffeine which can shake you out of your stupor, and if that wasn’t enough, the sugar content releases serotonin in the brain which is a common ingredient in many anti-depressant medicines. Wait, there’s more! It also triggers the release of endorphins in the brain which leads to an enhanced feeling of happiness! Now don’t be foolish enough to gorge on chocolates all day long, unless of course you want to gain a ton- save it for those really depressing days when all you want to do is lie in bed and stare at the ceiling.

Yum! Who doesn’t like bananas? Well now you have a reason to eat at least one a day- particularly if you tend to get stressed out at

the drop of a hat! Apart from chasing away the blues, bananas are also high in potassium and tryptophan which help to elevate the

serotonin levels in your body. These fruits are also a great source of magnesium- a mineral

that will keep your anxiety levels in check and help you sleep better at night.

Safeguard your HappinessRelationships play a very important part in our lives, getting on well with people and having

the support of our family and friends play a very important role in our lives. It is very rare to meet a person that fulfils all your expectations. In fact, the challenge of any relationship is working together to make it mutually satisfying. By accepting a relationship

that is less than perfect, you will learn to adapt and compromise and, in the process, develop greater self awareness.

According to the Compass School of Feng Shui there are eight directions that have an important role to play in our lives. Four are beneficial and four are harmful. Identifying and imple-menting your positive direction and avoiding the harmful ones can generate positive results. These are calculated according to your date of birth. There is a unique vibration emanating from the compass directions that will influence us in a positive or negative way. Generally speaking, I believe men and women of all age groups and backgrounds want to find a partner at some time in their lives.

To be more confident

Southeast will help you in being more confident in starting a relationship. Sleep with your head pointing this direction. You may feel more confident by placing a bowl of fresh water in this part of your house .

To be more social

South energy makes you more social, outing and expressive. Try to sleep with your head pointing in this direction.

To improve your relationship

Southwestern energies helps you put more energy into your relationship and find

ways to make it better. To activate this area, place fresh yellow flowers or use more of yellow in this area. Try sitting together facing this direction. Make sure that you do not criticize other. Try to listen to each other and really hear what your partner has to say.

West will help you feeling more romantic, playful and fun loving. This direction could help you attract a new partner. It is suggested to sleep with your head pointing to west. If possible place a flower vase with two fresh flowers of pink or red colour in western sector of your house .

The toilet should never be placed in south west corner of the house. When the attached bathroom of the master bedroom is placed in the southwest corner of the room, the marriage or relationship of the couple occupying the room is likely to be not very healthy. If the guest toilet of the house is located in this area then children specially daughters may have a hard time getting married. If you have already built a toilet in this area and are unable to change the layout, the remedy the situation by placing a mirror on the toilet door , avoid using it and keep the door closed at all times. This is to save the flushing away the family love and marriage happiness.

Sports England can bounce back to win series 3-2: Finn

Mohali, Oct 19 (IANS): England pacer Steven Finn said on Wednes-day the visitors still have the confi-dence to bounce back from 0-2 and win the five-match ODI series.

On the eve of the third ODI here, Finn said that India would make a big mistake by writing them off.

"India played well in the last couple of games. We were probably outplayed. We are 0-2 down in the series. We were in the same posi-tion against Sri Lanka earlier this summer but we came back to win the series 3-2. So there is belief in

the camp that we can come back and win this series," Finn said at the PCA Stadium.

The 22-year-old Middlesex pacer said England has nothing to lose as they are playing the World Cham-pions in their own backyard.

Finn said the tinge of grass on the Mohali track will boost the confidence of the English team.

"Obviously the wicket might change for tomorrow but it looks quite encouraging from the seam-ers' point of view. There is grass on the wicket but it doesn t necessarily

mean it will be a bowling friendly wicket. What we have to do is land the ball on good length and that s going to be our focus," he said.

Finn also said that there is hard-ly any difference between the two sides in the ongoing series.

"There is no real major differ-ence. India probably had the bet-ter knowledge of the conditions. India probably has more exposure to these conditions. When we were preparing we were aware of the conditions that we would face here," he said.

New ball rule help helping fast bowlers: Vinay Kumar

Mohali, Oct 19 (IANS): In-dia's medium pacer R. Vinay Kumar said on Wednesday that fast bowl-ers are getting more swing

with the introduction of the new In-ternational Cricket Council (ICC) rule of two balls in an ODI innings.

Vinay Kumar, who earned his ca-

reer-best figures of four for 30 in the second ODI in Delhi, said the white ball earlier used to swing for only 5-6 overs but now since two balls are be-ing used it moves around for 10-12 overs.

"Initially, the white ball didn't swing much. But using two new balls has been very helpful for bowlers. Previously, the ball used to swing max 5-6 overs but now it keeps on swinging for 10-12 overs. It (two new balls) is a plus factor for bowlers,"

Vinay Kumar said on the eve of the third ODI on Wednesday.

Vinay Kumar hoped that the Mo-hali track would assist fast bowlers.

"History says that the Mohali wick-et is good for fast bowlers. Hopefully, we will get good swing here," he said.

Despite playing a crucial role in the eight-wicket win in second ODI, Vinay Kumar was not disappointed to lose out on the Man of the Match award to teammate Virat Kohli, who hit an unbeaten 112 of 98 balls.

Onions to replace injured

Woakes

Mohali, Oct 20 (IANS): England bowler Chris Woakes will miss the rest of the One-day Interna-tional (ODI) series against India because of a thigh strain and will be replaced by Graham Onions.

Woakes, who picked up the injury during England's practice session on Sunday, did not play in his side's first two defeats in the five-match series. The third ODI will take place today.

"Woakes will now undertake a rehabilitation period that rules him out of the remaining three One-day Internationals.

"Durham's Onions has been called up as a replacement."

Onions will join the England squad ahead of the fourth ODI in Mumbai on Sunday.

Barcelona to set up football school in India

New Delhi, Oct 19 (IANS): After Manchester United, Liverpool, Ar-senal and Bayern Munich, now the world's best football club Barcelona has come calling to India to set up its first training school with Delhi-based Conscient Football.

Barcelona's football nursery FCBEscoles will be conducting camps at the Heritage School in Gur-gaon to train kids in the age-group of 6-14. Conscient Football is a part of the Conscient Group, which owns the Heritage Schools in the NCR region.

FCBscoles director Xevi Marce said the club will be providing top coaches from Nou Cup to run the camps here and they plan to train 10,000 children in the next three years.

"We don't promise to create a Messi here; we will not promise anything that we are not sure of. For us this is a social project and we want to support India. We have to go step by step," the Spaniard said.

Xevi said the camp will be no dif-ferent from the ones that are held in Barcelona. "At the camp the young-sters will be undergoing all the pro-grammes that are held at Nou Camp.

We will also bring 4-5 coaches who would not only train the young foot-ballers, but also Indian coaches," he said.

Asked about the trainees' chances to turn professional, Xevi said: "Even at La Masia (Barca's youth development centre) we can't guarantee how many boys can turn professional. Lot of fac-tors influence a player to turn profes-sional. Only time will tell how many professional players we can create from these camps," he said.

Conscient Football's director Anu Jain said: "In the first year the camp will be restricted only to the NCR and in the second year we will take it to the other metros. In the third year we will take it to the A level cities. We are also yet to finalise how much parents have to shell out for the camp but we will surely reserve some seats from the talented students."

Conscient Football has signed a three-year MOU with the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The Her-itage School in Gurgaon also served as the training base for AIFF-run In-dian Arrows and the India under-16 team.

Bell thanks India for recalling him in

Trent Bridge Test London, Oct 19 (IANS): Eng-land batsman Ian Bell has publicly thanked India for recalling him after a controversial run-out during the Trent Bridge Test in August.

Bell, who could turn out against India for the third ODI in Mohali ad-mitted that he made a mistake during the Trent Bridge Test by walking off assuming that ball was dead. Initially he was given out but later was recalled by India.

"It was an honest mistake. It was wrong to assume the ball was dead, and just to walk off was my fault. But, yes, I'm obviously grateful. If I could go back in time and the situation was different, I'd do it differently," Bell was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

"I hope people understand that things like that happen in cricket. I think something similar happened to V.V.S. Laxman in the West Indies and he wasn't called back, and the Indians were really annoyed about that," he said.

"But they wouldn't have changed the decision if they didn't think it was the right thing for the game. Hope-fully we can just move on," said Bell.

Bell said he is desperate to cement his place in the ODI team.

"I've never really had that clarity of what I need to go out and do. I'm experienced enough to know how to go out and play one-day cricket, but I still don't feel I know 100 per cent what my role is," he said.

F1 fans now have option of buying only race-day ticket

Greater Noida, Oct 19 (IANS): The much sought after grandstand tickets for the inaugural Formula One In-dian Grand Prix will be up for grabs at Rs. 15,000 as organizers Jaypee Sports International (JPSI) are not insisting on the purchase of three-day package tickets. They have also revised the rates of the picnic and the classic stands at the Buddh Interna-tional Circuit.

JPSI MD Sameer Gaur had an-nounced on Wednesday that the tick-et prices will be revised with a little over week left for the historic event scheduled Oct 28-30. The new pack-age will come into effect on Thursday.

JPSI sales officer Ishani Ghosh

told IANS that around 25 percent of the 75,000 tickets that had been put for sale are still available. While the total seating capacity is 110,000 the remaining tickets will be distributed as per the company's commitments.

That means fans who only want to watch the main race can buy a grand-stand ticket for Rs.15, 000 instead of shelling out Rs.35, 000 for the three-day combined ticket. The grandstand can seat 20,000.

Similarly, a seat in the classic stand will cost Rs.4, 000 for the race day against Rs.6,500 for three days -- practice sessions Friday, qualifying Saturday and the main race.

A single day ticket for the two

open picnic stands can be bought for Rs.3, 000 whereas the overall package comes to Rs.6, 000.

The offer is not valid for the premi-um stand, located next to the grand-stand. A three-day premium stand ticket costs Rs.12, 500.

"The tickets can be bought at book-myshow.com and the offer will be on until the tickets are sold out. The grandstand and the premium stand are the most sought after seats. We expect them to be sold out very soon," added Ghosh.

The cheapest tickets of Rs.2, 500 were for natural stand and were sold out three days after the launch August 21.

Over 40,000 students to participate in Salwan marathon

New Delhi, Oct 19 (IANS): It is that time of the year again when school children across the country will put on their running shoes to par-ticipate in the much awaited Salwan Marathon which kicks off Novem-ber 6 at the Army Equestrian Cen-tre at Brar Square.

The marathon is in its 17th edi-tion and will have over 40,000 stu-dents participating.

This year the marathon has tied up with 'Special Olympics Bharat' and the NGO 'Butterflies' to get in-tellectually challenged students and street kids to participate in the run for the first time, along with the stu-dents from schools across India for the visually impaired.

The marathon this year has also got the backing of UNICEF and FICCI.

The route this time round will be longer with restricted participation.

The special race and the run for un-der-14 and under-16 categories have been increased by half a kilometer.

Marathon organizer Sanjeev Rai said: "Every year we try to get nearer to our aim of inculcating a spirit of sports amongst an ever widening section of the youth of this country and teach them educational values through sports.

"The marathon is our way of making sports an integral part of every child's growing years. We in-tend to replicate this run in various cities in coming years."

FICCI Additional Director Raj-pal Singh complimented the organ-izers, saying the Salwan Marathon was a trendsetter in promoting sports at the school level in a highly competitive academic environment.

Over 1,200 physical instructors and 3,200 volunteers will supervise the marathon.

New Delhi, Oct 19 (IANS): After playing a happy-go-lucky girl in the show "Miley Jab Hum Tum", TV actress Rati Pandey is play-ing a serious girl in Zee TV's new show "Hitler Didi" - a role that's completely opposite to her real self. "This role is quite difficult as I have to be serious all the time. I am a very chirpy and bubbly girl in real life, I keep on smiling all the time. Also, I don't want to be mo-notonous with this character, as for someone who plays a serious role, there are hardly any shades," Rati told IANS. "I have tried to bring in some variations and hope hard work pays off," she added. In this show, Rati is playing Indrani, who takes up the responsibility of look-ing after her family singlehandedly. The show has Delhi as its backdrop and it is also being shot completely in Delhi. It will go on air Oct 31.

When asked about the love and sup-port that has poured in from all over the world after the death of Tiger Pataudi, Soha said: “I and my family really appreciate the love and sup-port that we have received from all over India and the world. We thank everyone for standing by us in this difficult moment.” Pataudi, who led India in 40 Test matches, died Sep 22 following a lung infection.

Holmes wants world tour with daughter

Off beat films keep me grounded:

MithunMumbai, Oct 19 (IANS): Three-time national award winning actor Mithun Chakraborty says it is impor-tant for him to work in off-beat films because this keeps him grounded. “Such films (off-beat films) pull you down from stardom to the ground and makes you feel human, and that is what brings me to such films,” Mithun, who plays the lead role in Bengali film “Nobel Chor”, Wednesday said at an event at the ongoing 13th Mumbai Film Festival (MFF). “I have been doing such films, so there is nothing about it,” said the actor who has successfully straddled both the worlds - commercial cinema and art house cinema. He won his first national award for “Mrigayaa” and he

got the prestigious honour for “Tahader Katha” and “Swami Vivekananda”.

“Nobel Chor”, which had its first world premiere at the 16th Busan International Film Festival and was an official selection for screening at the 55th BFI London Film Festival, has also been screened in the Indian Frame section at the MFF, a Reliance Entertainment initiative. It is organized by MAMI. Producer Ashwini Kumar Sharma says that box office business is important but bringing such stories to business is equally important. “Art house films also do good business at the box office. I am planning to release the film sometime in December,” he said.

London, Oct 20 (IANS): Actress Katie Holmes says she wants to travel the world with her five-year-old daughter Suri. The 32-year-old is eager to embark on the “next chapter” in her life, and is looking forward to taking on new dramatic roles and experiencing new cultures with Suri, her child with husband Tom Cruise. “I feel ready for the next chapter of my life. I’m excited to begin a new phase: roles I might have been afraid to play before, places I want to travel to with my daughter. I’d like to build the design business. But not too fast,” contactmusic.com quoted Holmes as saying.

Airport Metro open to filmmakers New Delhi, Oct 19

(IANS): Delhi's swank Airport Metro Express (AME)

can now be seen in all its speeding glit-ter in Bollywood films as the Reliance Infrastructure-led concessionaire will allow movie shoots, an official from the concessionaire said. "Ever since the Reliance Metro Airport Express Line started in February, requests for shoot-ing movies have come aplenty. Our world class modern stations and hi-tech, super speed trains are best locales for film shooting and promotion," said

Reliance Infrastructure Limited presi-dent Anil P. Gupta. Already, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has allowed film shooting inside the metro for Bollywood movies such as "Paa", "Bewafaa", "Dev.D", "Love Aaj Kal", "Black And White" and "Delhi-6".

"Shooting at the world class termi-nals and coaches is quite economical compared to metros of foreign cities. Moreover, AME provides world class, hi-tech facilities to the film producers at very cost effective prices," a Reliance Infrastructure official said. "At the

same time, the shootings will take place in such a way that it will not af-fect the commuters," he added.

Delhi Airport Metro Express will also host a promotional campaign Wednesday at Shivaji stadium metro station for Shah Rukh Khan's upcom-ing "RA-One" movie. Built at a cost of Rs.5,700 crore, the 23-km Airport Metro Express line has six stations: New Delhi Railway Station, Shivaji Sta-dium, Dhaula Kuan, Delhi Aero City, Indira Gandhi International Airport and Dwarka Sector 21.
