Delegation Report to the 9th InterMedical School Physiology Quiz
Fadel Muhammad Garishah, Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University
Physiology is one branch of
biomedical science. The Greeks
around 600bc used Physiology to
describe the philosophical inquiry
into the nature of things used the
term “Physiology”.
The science covers the
functions of living systems. It
comprehensively discusses from Fadel Muhammad Garishah at UMMC
the smallest molecular cell functions to the complicated homeostasis.
A. The Inter Medical School Physiology Quiz
Professor Dr. Cheng Hwee Ming is a notable Physiologist from Department of
Physiology, Faculty of Medicine University of Malaya. He initiated his idea about
bringing an inter Medical School Quiz for the medical subject, Physiology.
The IMSPQ proposes the Prof. A. Raman Challenged Trophy for the winner,
and also a packet of Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine from McGraw Hill
Medical Publishing Malaysia.
B. Universitas Diponegoro Delegation to IMSPQ
Faculty of Medicine Universitas Diponegoro sent its first delegation in 2010.
The delegation passed the first round. In 2011, Dr. Hardian from Department of
Physiology initiated the first delegation by the students idea about sending the
delegation of UNDIP to the 8th IMSPQ.
The second delegation was represented by Fadel Muhammad Garishah, Eriel
Sandika, Fitria Prabandari, Nida Nur Hanifah and Christie Ayudiatama. The
delegation also passed the first round, but then didn’t enter the next round.

C. The Competition
The first step was the multiple
choices questions. The questions are 100
physiological questions true and false also
suitable answers. It was an amazing test I
ever experienced. We were all nervous
since we somehow not really sure of our
answers.
The team failed to pass the first round directly from the multiple choices questions
step. At the pre-‐eliminary round we passed to the first round, but then we did not
pass the next round again.
The questions are basic physiology, covered from the Cell and Muscle
Physiology, Renal Physiology, Pulmorespiratory Physiology and Cardiovascular
Physiology, also Physiology of Reproductive System and Endocrinology.
Prof Cheng was the master of quiz. He read the oral questions, and each
team (consisted of the 3 students) had to answer the questions alternately.
The competition was won by Chulalongkorn University, followed by the NUS
and All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences.
Eriel Sandika, Nida Nur Hanifa, Prof Dr. Cheng Hwee Ming, Fadel Muhammad Garishah
and Fitria Prabandari
In the end of competition, the UNDIP team gave a gift from our Dean of
Medicine Dr. Endang Ambarwati, and took picture together.

D. Experiences in Kuala Lumpur
Malaysia is the first country I visited. The group took flight via Semarang
Jakarta Soekarno-‐Hatta and landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Dr. Noor
Wijayahadi (Department of Pharmacology) and his wife had already picked us, since
he was having a Pharmacological Research in Kuala Lumpur.
After we arrived at the College (Students’ Apartment) we get prepared the
next competition. At the competition day we followed the competitions included the
cultural night where all the students brought their country performance. And
honestly I didn’t feel the tight tension between Indonesia and Malaysia. All the
medical students there are very respectful to us.
We also visited some places like the PETRONAS Twin towers and also the
Central Market. We were guided by the UM Medical Student Christabel David
Mojiun and Jenny Lam.

E. Faculty of Medicine UM and Medical Students Life in KL
The atmosphere is of course not different from Indonesia. But the education
and students atmosphere somehow seemed to be different. The students in
Malaysia have to live in the college within the campus, and they are only permitted
to go home at the weekend.
Every morning they get prepared and begin the class in the morning, while in
the afternoon they do some sports, and gather together playing around.
I experienced a very different atmosphere somehow, maybe because of the
new place or the different education management.
F. Lessons I Learned
Through this competition I experienced the different way of thinking and
study. As the medical students, we must study comprehensively, and it will be better
if we know even the single detail of a physiological mechanism, so we can analyze
the pathological basis of disease even better.
And for you who wants to join IMSPQ you must prepare your basic
physiology with strength, and fundamentally.
