Del Rey YC was the first to have its own clubhouse at Marina del Rey in 1965. Shown is a portion of the main clubroom as seen from edge of central dining room.

Six YC' s Now Have Clubhouses Here

Among the ten or more yacht clubs now active at Marina del Rey, six have clubhouses here. Allowing for a few duplicate or even h·iplicate memberships, there are now more than 2,000 YC members at this Marina; a numerical ratio of about rme for every two boats.

First of the clubhouse buildings to be completed here was that of Del Rey YC in 1965. Established in 1952 in anticipation of the creation of Marina del Rev this YC currently has about 500 acti~,e members.

The second such clubhouse to be completed here was that of California YC in 1967. This YC has had two lifetimes. The first, begun in 1921, ended about 1947 after the Navy took over its clubhouse in Los Angeles Harbor during World War II. Reestablished in 1961, it now has about 600 members.

RACING IN AN OFFSHORE WIND

By HARRISON

HINE

Racing in a strong offshore or "Santana" wind can be as exciting as racing on a mountain lake where the smrounding terrain causes the wind to be quite shifty. However, for the inexperienced skipper used to the usually steady winds along our coastline, the offshore wind can cause many problems.

Much has been written abou t the cause of the Santana wind however little has been said about the sailing technique used in such a wind. First, the skipper must expand his awareness to each wind change both in velocity and direction. As the wind flows down out of the Santa Monica Mountains it is subject to drastic changes in direction, sometimes up to goo.

One of my memorable experiences with a "Santana" wind was in the Windjammers Cruising Classes Race two years ago. The race had started in a light westerly wind which died as the fleet rounded the "B" mark. Alert skippers noticed a dark wind line approaching from the Santa Monica shore and maneuvered their boats to intercept the wind shift first and in the most favorable position. Other skippers soon followed and the fleet began an exciting beat toward the Santa Monica bell bouy in an increasing 20 mph breeze. As the beat continued the breeze, which at the outset had been steady, began to shift back and forth radically. Each shift could be seen as a dark line on the water. Some shifts were as much as goo which required a tack right before the shift arrived.

The fl eet encountered such a shift as it approached the area near P.O.P. pier. I was to leeward of a Feather class sloop as the wind shift arrived. The skipper of the Feather, sitting on the leeward side, apparently did not see the shift. When he sailed into it he was caught by surprise. His jib backed and his boat took a quick knockdown. When the boat popped back to an upright position it was half full of water and only after quickly lowering the sails and some frantic bailing was the upset crew safely towed back into the marina.

Such unfortunate incidents can be avoided if skippers are prepared for

Sailing in an offshore wind off Santa Cruz Harbor.

the unexpected. When sailing in a strong offshore wind hy to keep the following three points in mind :

l . Stay alert at all times for radical wind shifts; these can b e used to put large distances between you and your competition.

2. Know your crew's capabilities and the limits of your boat.

3. When it's blowing keep a watchful eye to weather for approaching wind shifts. Watch for the shifts on the water and the actions of the boats ahead of you. If it's light, be prepared for a 180° shift.

When it's blowing a "Santana," keep close to shore and enjoy the thrill of fast sailing in smooth water.

now in Honolulu, and Frcebairn's hull design antidates this one by about 100 vears . .. · Present plans call for ge tting the hull into the water by summer, where it will be completed and rigged, and its staggering yardage of sail furnished by a local sail maker.

Clubhouses Here Continued

Among YCs without clubhouses here, but frequently active in Marina del Rey's numerous boating and social events , are Santa Monica YC, Malibu YC, Westward Cruising Club, Palos Verdes YC, King Harbor YC, and the South Bay Yacht Racing Club.

Besides the power and sailboat racing which the YCs here as elsewhere are almost entirely responsible for organizing, sponsoring, ,md providing facilities and trophies for, most of today's YCs are also strongly family oriented. In addition to their seagoing activities of racing and cruising, all carry on con tinuing and varied programs of social, educational, and junior activities.
