Cabot in the UK is to market two new degradable mas~~a~hes, one biode~adable and one pho~e~adable. The carrier will be polythene, and both compounds will be processable on standard equipment. The break-down time’ will be variable from between three months to five years.

Bayer of W. Germany is producing thermoplastic impregnated tape and sheet for low-cost structural components. Trade-named Polystal, the products consist of glass or carbon fibre embedded in a matrix of PPS, nylon, or polycarbonate. The materials are described as having very high strength and stiffness at low density values.

Akzo Engineering Plastics, W. S. Shamban & Co., and Solidur Plastics, have all developed internally lubricated thermoplastics. The Akzo range is trade-named Plaslube and include polycarbonate and modified polyphenylene ether based materials. Plaslube IXXl~‘l3/7, has a polycarbonate base with a 7% loading of FTFE. Plaslube M-1025 is a modified PPE with a 5% loading of FTFE. It serves as a lower cost substitute for Plaslube PC-5 1-5l/5w7.

Turcite PK, developed by Shamban is a polyacetal-based material, honing an unspecified internal lubricant, and has low frictional properties, high fatigue and wear resistance, good dimensional stability and resistance to chemicals and corrosion.

Solidur Plastics material, designated Solidur 10 802 AST, is an internally lubricated UHMW polythene with an antistatic additive.

These pigments are now marketed by Kronos Inc. of Houston and are trade-named Kionos instead of Titanox.

COMPANY NEWS

EniMont America (formerly Enichem USA), N.Y.C., has announced a $60 million expansion programme for its plastics additives in Europe and the US that will result in increased production of antioxidants and light stabilizers, as well as the introduction of several new products, including a halogen-free flame retardant.

A new plant will be built in Italy to produce Anox 20 ~tioxid~t, and Alkanox 240 high-~~o~~~e phosphite antioxidant for the European and US markets.
