PROFILES PROFILESStephen Schwartz was born in New York City on March 6, 1948. He studied piano and composition at the Juilliard School of Music while in high school and graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in 1968 with a B.F.A. in Drama.

Upon coming back to live in New York City, he went to work as a producer for RCA Records, but shortly thereafter began to work in the Broadway theatre. His first major credit was the title song for the play Butterflies Are Free; the song was eventually used in the movie version as well.

In 1971, he wrote the music and new lyrics for Godspell, for which he won several awards including two Grammys. This was followed by the English texts, in collaboration with Leonard Bernstein, for Bernstein’s MASS, which opened the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The following year, he wrote the music and lyrics for Pippin and two years later, The Magic Show. At one point, Godspell, Pippin and The Magic Show were all running on Broadway simultaneously.

He next wrote the music and lyrics for The Baker’s Wife, followed by a musical version of Studs Terkel’s Working, to which he contributed four songs, and which he also adapted and directed, winning the Drama Desk Award as best director. He also co-directed the television production, which was presented as part of the PBS American Playhouse series. Next came songs for a one-act musical for children, Captain Louie, and a children’s book, The Perfect Peach. He then wrote music for three of the songs in the Off-Broadway revue, Personals, lyrics to Charles Strouse’s music for Rags, and music and lyrics for Children of Eden.

He then began working in film, collaborating with composer Alan Menken on the scores for the Disney animated features Pocahontas—for which he received two Academy Awards and another Grammy—and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. He also provided songs for DreamWorks’ first animated feature, The Prince of Egypt, for which he won another Academy Award for the song “When You Believe.” He most recently collaborated with Alan Menken on the songs for Disney’s Enchanted.

Schwartz provided music and lyrics for the original television musical, Geppetto, recently adapted for the stage as My Son Pinocchio. He has released two CDs on which he sings new songs, Reluctant Pilgrim and Uncharted Territory.

Schwartz’s most recent musical, Wicked, opened in the fall of 2003 and is currently running on Broadway and in several other productions around the United States and the world. In 2008, Wicked reached its 1,900th performance on Broadway, making Schwartz the only songwriter in Broadway history ever to have three shows run more than 1,900 performances.

His first opera, Séance on a Wet Afternoon, premiered at Opera Santa Barbara in the fall of 2009 and was recently produced by New York City Opera.

Schwartz has recently been given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A book about his career, Defying Gravity, has been released by Applause Books.

Under the auspices of the ASCAP Foundation, he runs musical theater workshops in New York and Los Angeles, and serves on the ASCAP board. He is also a member of the Council of the Dramatists’ Guild.

Scott Coulter is one of New York’s most honored vocalists. For his work in cabaret, Coulter has received five MAC Awards (Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs), five Bistro Awards and two Nightlife Awards for Outstanding Vocalist.

He has performed at most of NYC’s top rooms including Birdland, 54 Below, The Oak Room at the Algonquin, and Feinstein’s at The Regency, where he spent a record-setting eight months performing the revue 11 O’Clock Numbers at 11 O’Clock, which he also co-created, directed and musically arranged. His self-titled debut CD won the 2003 MAC Award for Outstanding Recording and was chosen as the best recording of the year by TheatreMania and Cabaret Scenes magazine, which pronounced it “quite simply, the best these ears have ever heard.”

Coulter was director and star of A Christmas Carol: The Symphonic Concert in its world premiere with the Baltimore Symphony and reprised his role in the Emmy-nominated PBS production that premiered in December 2013.

Since 1997, Coulter has performed around the country with award-winning songwriting duo Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich in their many revues. While singing with Goldrich and Heisler, he was discovered by Oscar and Grammy winning composer Stephen Schwartz, who then invited him to join the revue Stephen Schwartz and Friends. That revue (starring Schwartz and Coulter along with Liz Callaway and Tony Award-winner Debbie Gravitte) has been performing all over the world since 1999. Schwartz has said, “One of the greatest things that can happen to a composer is to have his music interpreted by Scott Coulter.”

Coulter regularly performs in concert both as a solo artist and with a variety of legendary performers including Stephen Schwartz, Tony-winner Ben Vereen and Grammy-winner Sheena Easton. He has performed with symphonies all over the world including San Francisco, Baltimore, Seattle, Phoenix, Winnipeg, St. Louis and Calgary.

As a director his credits include many shows for The Town Hall in NY (Broadway by the Year, Broadway’s Rising Stars, Broadway Originals, Broadway Unplugged) and BBTY for The Berkshire Theatre Festival and Broadway by the Bay. Along with Michael Kerker and ASCAP, he’s produced and directed several installments of Michael Feinstein’s Standard Time at Carnegie Hall. He is creator, arranger and director the of several touring shows including Music Of The Knights, Cinema Toast, Southern Comfort, You’ve Got a Friend: Carole King, Neil Sedaka and the Music Of The Brill Building, Blockbuster Broadway! and his critically acclaimed solo show, The Fella Sings Ella, which honors the life of the legendary Ella Fitzgerald. His concert creation The King: The Music of Elvis premiered with the Calgary Philharmonic and is currently playing symphony halls across America and Canada.

Coulter has taught master classes from Los Angeles to Kalamazoo to Riga, Latvia and is creator of his own unique group vocal coaching series called Songbook. He recently wrote the book for the new musical Got to Be There, which celebrates the life and music of songwriter Elliot Willensky.

Coulter is founder/owner of Spot-On Entertainment (www.Spot-OnEntertainmnet.com). He’s a resident director of programming at 54 Below (Broadway’s Supper Club) in NYC and is a graduate of the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

The outstanding and internationally renowned vocalist, guitarist and composer Allan Harris sums up his personal perspective on music in clear and straightforward terms. “There is nothing that I have found that

defines and gives credence to my place in this wild and mysterious universe than this thing called music.” Harris exemplifies that statement perfectly with his stunning new album Nobody’s Gonna Love You Better (Black Bar Jukebox Redux), his eleventh album following on the heels of his highly acclaimed 2015 release Black Bar Jukebox. For this, Harris takes an even more eclectic approach, drawing upon the wide range of music that he heard growing up in Brooklyn, and feasting on the expansive palette of the Harlem cultural landscape. “My new album captures some of the varied sounds and feelings that have shaped my growth as an artist. I had not one style to heavily rely upon when putting these tunes together, but only my young memories of music, people and events.” Nobody’s Gonna Love You Better is a bold statement that builds upon the entire breadth of Harris’ already esteemed reputation, demonstrating his enormous versatility within the full scope of his highly creative musical vision. Swinging jazz, rich R&B, sumptuous balladry, wailing rock, rumbling blues and even a touch of playful Brazilian are all woven seamlessly into the tapestry of a musical odyssey that is all Allan Harris. With a deeply resonant baritone/tenor voice that is soulful, richly expressive and flawless in both intonation and phrasing, Harris displays a total command and fluency in every context.

Back from the previous album are the GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Brian Bacchus and Harris’ longtime keyboard cohort Pascal Le Boeuf (on acoustic and electric pianos, and Hammond B3 organ), whose deep understanding and empathy for Harris’ music creates a marvelous sense of intimacy and shared joy of expression. Pascal is also the primary instrumental soloist and delivers in an inspired fashion throughout. Joining him in the exceptional rhythm section are Russell Hall on acoustic and electric bass, Shirazette Tinnin on drums and cajón, and Freddie Bryant on both electric and classical guitar. Together, with Harris also on acoustic, electric and resonator guitar, they provide impeccably flawless support, whether driving, embellishing, shaping or enhancing the settings as ideally suited to the intent of the music. The delightful repertoire includes four Harris originals, a couple of American Songbook gems, a pair of jazz classics, and re-imaginations of hit songs from Jimi Hendrix, Steely Dan and Spiral Staircase. As he does with every lyric, Harris pays proper homage to those who have provided the inspiration for his own highly personal sound, specifically here to Ray Charles, Nat ‘King’ Cole and Eddie Jefferson on three individual items. On “I Remember You,” Harris channels Nat (a subject of an earlier Harris tribute project) in a beautifully touching rendition with brilliant piano support throughout, as well as a solo that glides in the territory where Red Garland and Erroll Garner meet. “Ruby”—from the Ruby Gentry film score, and a major hit for Ray Charles—is satin-smooth balladry over an old-school swing-jazz groove, complete with Bryant’s Freddie Green-like guitar strumming. For the iconic “Moody’s Mood For Love,” Harris takes the concept of making an often-performed song one’s own to an entirely new level, offering a totally fresh interpretation—in rhythm, phrasing and lyrical structure—to the Eddie Jefferson classic. The Stan Getz/João Gilberto hit

Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Benny Carter, Oliver Nelson, Ray Charles and many others. The CJO also performs compositions and arrangements by members of the CJO, including Associate Artistic Director Charles Harrison.

For more than 35 years, the CJO has been at the forefront of presenting performances of classic American jazz orchestra repertoire to diverse audiences through reasonably priced programs held at a variety of venues. Always looking for new challenges, both in repertoire and stylistic choices, Lindberg has infused the Orchestra with a spirit of versatility that has made the group a favorite performer not only in jazz venues, but also for concert settings, receptions and dances—just about anywhere that exceptional big band music can be presented. Audiences have the opportunity to hear unique musical arrangements transcribed by the CJO, and because the Orchestra has its own transcriptions of the original recordings, much of the music presented in these concerts cannot be heard anywhere else.

The Orchestra appears at a variety of venues and institutions across the Chicago metropolitan area, including the Spertus Institute (Venue SIX10), University of Chicago, Symphony Center, Jay Pritzker Pavilion, Midway Plaisance, Andy’s Jazz Club, Francis W. Parker School, Evanston’s Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, and Naperville’s Wentz Concert Hall and North Central College. Merit School of Music is the Orchestra’s leading organizational partner for educational programming, including day-long clinics that culminate with students performing alongside members of the CJO, master classes led by renowned guest artists of the Orchestra, and open rehearsals. The CJO also provides complimentary concert tickets to underserved public school students and their families.

The CJO has served as the resident orchestra for the Kennedy Center Honors Supper Dance for more than 25 years. In 2006, the Orchestra performed before a sold-out audience at the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, SC. The CJO has toured Europe twice, including performances in Italy, Spain, Denmark and Sweden. The Orchestra has performed with such artists as Dizzy Gillespie, Nancy Wilson, Louis Bellson, Herbie Hancock, Jon Faddis, Kurt Elling, Jack McDuff, Kenny Burrell and many more.

The CJO’s recording—Clark Terry and Jeff Lindberg’s Chicago Jazz Orchestra: George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess (Americana Music, 2004)—received widespread critical acclaim, including a nomination as “Jazz Album of The Year” by the Jazz Journalist’s Association, and a rare “Five Star” rating by DownBeat magazine, which also named it one of the top recordings of the previous decade. In addition, it also made the annual “top CD’s” lists of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Jazz Times, and Jazz Education Journal. To celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2013, the CJO released Burstin’ Out, which features emerging vocalist Cyrille Aimée and the Orchestra on a diverse album of both classic and original jazz arrangements.

Howard Reich of the Chicago Tribune has described the CJO as “sublimely controlled.” In 2006, he reported a “trouncing” of the Count Basie Orchestra by the CJO in a “Battle of the Bands” as part of the “Made in Chicago” series presented in Millennium Park. In 2015, Reich cited the CJO as “one of the best big bands in the country.” Kevin Whitehead of the Chicago Sun-Times believes that a CJO performance is “what repertory jazz should be: not a tepid re-creation of work, but a chance to hear how skillfully blended instrumental voices can set a room humming.”

“Doralice” is a deliciously infectious samba, sung by Harris in Portuguese, and featuring a fine acoustic solo by Bryant. The three popular song re-imaginations include a somewhat up-tempo blues shuffle take on Hendrix’ “Up from the Skies,” with Harris in a neatly syncopated groove over LeBoeuf’s funky B3. Pascal’s Hammond organ sets a bright tone for a bouncy swing version of Spiral Staircase’s mega-hit “More Today Than Yesterday” and Steely Dan’s “Any Major Dude Will Tell You” gets a transformation (and relocation) from Americana to Harlem, shifting smoothly between brisk syncopation and atmospheric rubato. The four Harris originals aptly demonstrate that he is as skilled a composer as a vocalist—and his lyrics are moving, heartfelt and poetic. The album opener “Mother’s Love (Nobody’s Gonna Love You)” begins on a poignant, emotive and dramatic note before morphing into a vibrantly swinging excursion. Its bookend closer “Secret Moments” is a lovely, gentle and lushly evocative ballad, while “Swing” is a powerfully syncopated and punchy romp. Provocative, confrontational and rousing best describes “Blue Was Angry” (from the Cross That River song-cycle). Hard-edged, fiery and with a message of barely-controlled ferocity, it flies over a rip-roaring rhythm section and Harris’ raw electric guitar. It may be unexpected by Harris’ large fan base, but it’s deeply emotional and on point. Over the past 20 years, Harris has steadily developed his reputation as one of the finest vocalists of his era. Brooklyn-born and Harlem-based, he has forged his sterling credentials through his 10 previous albums, covering a broad range of contexts, all netted together within the rich territory of the jazz tradition. In addition to his recordings, he has performed on a worldwide stage that has taken him to prestigious international festivals and halls in Europe, the Middle East and Asia,

as well as the 2012 Olympics in London. At home, he has toured nationally at festivals and top venues, including New York’s Lincoln Center and D.C.’s Kennedy Center. He has received numerous awards, including the New York Nightlife Award for “Outstanding Jazz Vocalist” (which he won three times), the Backstage Bistro Award for “Ongoing Achievement in Jazz,” the Harlem Speaks “Jazz Museum of Harlem Award,” and the DownBeat Critic’s Poll Award for “Rising Star Vocalist.” Nobody’s Gonna Love You Better (Black Bar Jukebox Redux) will continue to build his legacy as another milestone in the extraordinary artistic aesthetic of Allan Harris.

The Chicago Jazz Orchestra (CJO) celebrates and perpetuates jazz orchestra music—an original American art form—for all audiences through unique performance, collaboration and education. The CJO strives to develop and promote an appreciation for and understanding of music for the American jazz orchestra as it was originally conceived, performed, and recorded by jazz master composers and soloists. Through collaborative efforts and partnerships, the CJO seeks to provide listening and educational opportunities in a variety of settings and formats.

The CJO is Chicago’s oldest professional jazz orchestra in continuous operation and one of the oldest jazz repertory orchestras in the country. When Jeff Lindberg and the late Steve Jensen first came up with their big band concept in 1978 (founded as the Jazz Members Big Band), they could not have predicted the remarkable metamorphosis that turned a group of first-call musicians into what is now known as the Chicago Jazz Orchestra, a 17-piece premiere jazz ensemble that has garnered both national and international recognition.

Conductor and Artistic Director Jeff Lindberg is one of the foremost transcribers in jazz. As a result, the Orchestra’s repertoire draws upon his vast library, which includes the works of
