1. What activities do people in a particular group or society identify as sports?
2. Whose sports count the most in a group or society when it comes to obtaining support and resources?
Jarvie
• Modern sport has been described as a ritual sacrifice of human energy; providing a common cultural currency between peoples; a means of compensating for deficiencies in life; a mechanism for the affirmation of identity and difference; business rather than sport; a social product; a contested arena; shaped by stuggles both on and off the field of play and being a euphemism for Western or capitalist sport (Jarvie, 2005).
Australian Sports Commission “a human activity capable of
achieving a result requiring physical exertion and/or physical skill, which, by its nature and organisation, is competitive and is generally accepted as being a sport (Australian Sports Commission, 2010).”
Conclusion
• Definitions of sport from the respondents include: competition, entertainment, game, team or community event, form of socialization, activity requiring an opponent, exhausting event, bodily activity, exercise and desirable activity. Their definitions are very varied and mostly stem from observation or personal experience. Some of their given definitions are inaccurate, while others are correct. Clarifications are still needed to increase people’s understanding of sports.
