TransportMy favourite way to transport myself around town is by bike.

In Groningen are a lot of other people, mostly students, who like to do the same. When I am cycling to the centre there are multiple obstacles to take. for example a roundabout where nobody knows

who goes first, a crossroad which is the most dangerous in town, multiple zebra crossings where pedestrians don’t even dare to cross

over and when they do they have to be very skilled in timing. When it goes wrong, yes it does sometimes, it is mostly because of pedestrians who don’t know the ‘rules’. The best about these dares

is that every time when I ride my bike it is an adventure, a real adrenalin kick!

You could think that when I am going by airplane I am almost going to die of excitement. Danger is everywhere. But watching all

the people at the airport transporting themselves to the airplane is actually the most interesting. Maybe you have to be the person who actually steers the vehicle or has some responsibility, to have

some pleasure in transportation.

The sun poured into their South-facing flat. The pair leant on the balcony, looking out across the City. They sipped honey coloured Coronas with lips swollen from inflating balloons. The coals of the barbeque were smoking. A plate of cel-lophaned crudités sweated in the sun, surrounded by china dishes of olives, antipasto, sundried tomatoes and a tray of cream dips. ‘I should’ve homemade the humus,’ Megan said. ‘There’s still time,’ Mark replied. ‘no,’ she said. ‘She’ll be here any second now.’ ‘She won’t mind.’ ‘no. Best just leave it now.’Mark arranged a tangle of tobacco onto the crease of a rizla, and carefully folded the cigarette together. He pinched one end between his lips, and patted his pockets for a match. ‘Maybe we should put a record on,’ Megan suggested. ‘So when people start arriving ... y’know? Create a bit on an atmosphere.’Mark left his cigarette unlit, opened the balcony door and entered the cool flat. Balloons were tied to the record shelves, looped around the bookshelves and haunted the floor. He picked a louis Jordan record, and slid the liquorice vinyl from its dust-scented cardboard sleeve. A crackle, and then the soft melody filled the flat.

‘Any second now,’ Megan said.Steph leant forward, getting as close to the shop assistant as she could. ‘I don’t think you understand,’ she said. ‘The top fit in the changing rooms yesterday. When I got home, the buttons were hanging off by a thread. All of them! How could I have stretched it without even wearing it?’ ‘I’ll have to get my manager,’ the girl said, a hint of a sneer on her thin lips. Steph rolled her eyes. ‘I don’t have time for this.’ ‘I’ll just be two ticks,’ the shop assistant said. She had a quick discussion with a haute blonde holding a clipboard. She strutted back. ‘We can offer you an exchange,’ she said. ‘That’s all I want. I wanted to wear this top tonight - I have a thing.’The woman said nothing, jabbed at a touch-screen till with acrylic nails. She scanned the barcode of the damaged top, scanned it again. A receipt began to spill from the till. ‘fill this in,’ the girl said, handing her a receipt covered in dotted lines. ‘Do I have to? I’m really in a rush.’ ‘Just fill in the form please. I’ll grab you another top. Size ten, right?’

‘Right,’ Steph said with a smile. She scribbled down her name and address, then fished through her handbag for her mobile. As she was scrolling to find her own phone number, which she’d never bothered to learn, the girl reappeared, holding a replacement garment. ‘We’ve sold out of that style in a ten. We’ve got this one, which is quite similar, or you could try the twelve.’ ‘Typical,’ she snapped. ‘I want to speak to the manager.

‘Maybe we should start putting the meat on,’ Mark said. ‘It’s only just gone five, and she said she had some stuff to do in town.’ ‘no,’ Megan said, ‘leave it. I don’t want it to be cold by the time she gets here. We’ll start barbequing when she gets here. I’ll put on another record.’Mark dampened the gum-strip of his fourth roll-up.

The manager wasn’t incredibly sympathetic. ‘I’m offering you a good-will exchange, but frankly this top looks as though it’s been stretched.’ ‘Well, if you had one in my size, I’d happily demonstrate how well a size ten fit.’ ‘look, you can choose. Either take another size, or choose another garment, but there’s really nothing more we can do today.’ ‘I’m running late,’ Steph said. ‘Just give me the size eight.’ ‘You know, if it doesn’t fit, you can’t exchange this again?’ ‘Yes,’ Steph snapped, throwing the shopping bag into her tote. ‘That’s fine.’She left the shop at a trot, and broke out into a run as she approached oxford Circus. fumbling with the ticket machine, she broke through onto the escalator and took the steps two at a time. She ran for the train, and forced herself through the doors as they pinched closed. The train left the platform, a slow grind.

‘Was that the door?’ Megan asked, craning her neck to catch Mark’s attention. francesca, pale faced, was clutching a bottle of red. ‘oh my god, have you guys heard? Wait, where’s the

birthday girl?’Megan took her coat whilst Mark poured her a glass of wine. ‘on her way,’ Megan said. ‘What’s up?’ ‘There was a bombing,’ she said. ‘on the tube. Right at oxford Circus. It’s all up in smoke. Turn on the news, quick.’They gathered around the television, and watched dark plumes of deathly smoke pour from the opening of the tube station.

‘ If it’s ringing, she’s not even on the tube. No need to call anyone. She’ll call us as soon as she can. ’

‘Someone call Steph,’ Megan said. ‘for fuck’s sake, some one call Steph.’ ‘She’ll be well on her way by now,’ Mark said. ‘Don’t worry.’ ‘It’s almost five,’ Megan said, as francesca unbuttoned her collar and began fanning her neck with a dog-eared Camus novel. The pages of l’Etranger fluttered against her pale throat.

Mark poured them each a glass of Grenache, his stubbled Adam’s apple bobbing as he swallowed back nerves. Megan opened the freezer, and banged the ice tray to loosen the cubes. Everyone flinched. ‘At least it’s ringing,’ Megan said, her bitten fingertips drumming against the counter top. ‘If it’s ringing, she’s not even on the tube. no need to call anyone. She’ll call us as soon as she can.’

‘look here,’ the girl said. ‘Isn’t this that cow’s mobile?’ ‘oh great,’ the manager said, taking the thing. ‘I was hoping she’d become a regular.’ ‘Switch it off, eh?’ ‘let’s leave it over night,’ she replied. ‘We’ll call her first thing tomorrow, let her know we have her damn phone. let her sweat for a bit.’
